These videos make me forget the awful times we're living in and make me time travel to some simpler times. Nostalgia is a beautiful and depressive feel.

I as well have a Windows 98 machine, a Windows XP PC, a Windows Vista machine, and I am quite regularly playing games or just sitting in front of them. Also regularly I am doing something on an XPor Vista VM. But it's not the same. I always stare at the screen and remember the simpler times and the joy those products brought to my life a few years ago, some memories enter my head and then I can't stop thinking of how this is not going back anytime soon. And I do enjoy new tech and stuff, but just the oldies hit different. ^^ Stay safe!
@@simmcho Thanks and stay safe also. I have a 98 laptop the first I ever used and fell in love with, XP, and a 7vm plus the other two in vm for specific reasons. Also a Tiger / OS9 iBook.

Even if I didn't grow up around this time, looking at old media from the 80's-early 2000's just gives me so much nostalgia, everything has it's own charm compared to the corporate, plastic look of everything today

That’s great! Unfortunately my Windows XP PC died and I lost all my precious files. My childhood PC, forever gone. All that’s left of it are the memories I have.
@@Mobin92 yes you’re right, but the story is much stupider. for some reason, the PC was reformatted. I was 10 or 11 at the time and I couldn’t save it.

@@miro007ist reminds me of mine too, it got destroyed while i was chilling and using my PC then all of the sudden my PC, it froze (this pc is most likely common to actually freeze) then i restarted but it just freezes and doesn't load windows.
When Michael said "ice storm, not ice tray" I got flashbacks to that one video of his where he got a sponsorship email for ice trays and he just lost his mind laughing.

The “500k” at the end of the video titles in “Winter Video Animations” might correlate to the bit rate of the video. Many of the videos when played in Windows Media Player say “491 k bits/second” (17:54)
I believe you are correct, they are steady bit rates and the others are variable bit rate.

Sounds like Chocobos in the FFXI theme pack. For context, Chocobos are Ostrich like birds that are used similarity like a horses.
The FFXI one. It was a chocobo call and the other was a Mandragora I believe. And the Log off was the Protect Spell.
No idea what the Start Windows/Log on sound is.
I miss xp so much my fiance bought me a laptop with xp installed in it already, so I can get my games back I love. I still use it today. Thanks for the videos. Merry Christmas 🎄☃️

maybe 500k means it is ~500k bits/second because the video says it is playing at 491k bits/second in the bottom left

Nice. Will there be another try on Windows 10 or 11? It's almost a tradition. ;)
Would be interesting in any case, because much of this is probably not so compatible today. The "great" "new" WMP of Windows 11 I think no longer supports or will no longer support something like that. So it would make sense to archive WMP12, because it will be replaced soon. Movie Maker is unfortunately also no longer available in this form. I think somewhere on the net there is a remodeled version of Movie Maker 6.0 (Vista) that is upward compatible. Believe from a modder blain... I can't think of the name anymore.
But some things are nicely done and meanwhile standard. Background change is directly possible since Windows Vista or 7, and the PhotoStory application still runs today, only the export formats are a bit nostalgic.

if you can find a link to winter funpack 2004 in the wayback machine, it includes some new stuff like a special version of whitecap. (i happened to find a link from an archive of the visualiser download page) makes sense since they made the battery visualizer that comes with windows

I think the 500K refers to the bit rate. Most of the videos seem to have a message on the bottom that say 491 K bits/second.
I used to watch my dad play music for his DJ gigs over media player and was always fascinated by the visualizer.

the 500k was likely for 500kbit/sec. those vids were showing as 491kb/s while the others were under 300
500k appears to be related to the bit rate of the video. Some are variable bit rate and 500k seems to be a steady bit rate that falls around 491k or so.

My guess is those FFXI sounds are from the chocobos(race of birds) in the game.

I loved the Windows MovieMaker! It was great to quickly make stocking stuffer CDs and DVDs for friends and family. Making personalised artwork for each jewelcase (other software of course) made each disc special. Thumb drives or links just don't have that personal feel for me.

Now I'm thinking... Do Windows Media skins work on actual Windows Media versions? I don't think so, but it's a funny experiment.
Are you talking about modern versions of Windows Media? I have windows 10 and I dowloaded skins for Windows Media Player and it works but you have to manually open the file for the skin because it won't load on its own.
@@mercedespowers3264 The Windows Media Player pre-installed with Windows 10 is the same version that's pre-installed with Windows 7, so it's not that new.
You should do a review of a HP pavilion dv6110us. It has the most bloatware of any windows XP laptop i've ever seen. It takes over 5 hours to reinstall the OS with 3x 4.7GB DVDs. The worst offender of bloatware back in the day.

My favorite visualization was the Battery category. If memory serves me, I don’t think the visualizer would work if you played MIDI files at least in WMP 7. They may have changed that in later versions.
