I don't use any social media anymore for art and went back to traditional art recently, it's pretty refreshing also because the animosity that the internet provides makes online communities VERY toxic. I don't like how things are now but there isn't really much I can do
i became a full-time artist thanks to twitter in 2021. in 2025 i’m saying ‘fuck this’ and going back to school. feeding museum-quality thought-provoking work to addictive data-collection algorithms full of AI slop and scams feels more like art-washing hard drugs for a cut every time i’m forced to do it
Unfortunately, the instructors are using AI too so they too can feel the existential dread... Alternatively, they will obnoxiously peddle AI and later regret it when their jobs are canned, too.
Bro I saw one furry reposter account and they said in their bio like "I'm happy to help the small artists" and it's an absolute bs then that person now has 60k followers and the average of 4k-6k likes and 30k+ views per post. The "small" artist they said sometime has 10-30k followers, they put the artist name instead of tagging the artists themselves(what a scummy way to farm engagement), the worst part is the art that got repost always ended up with more engagement than the post of the artist with 0 effort.
I know it's difficult for some people, and I am privileged in that I no longer aspire to make a living from my work...but sharing your work with a few pals irl and finding enjoyment elsewhere is maybe a healthier way to live. At my job, my artwork is my computer desktop background, and it makes my colleagues laugh, and that's really enough satisfaction I need.
Honestly I love Tumblr for art. It's not social media, I don't feel like there's pressure to post. Just fun I feel bad for the artists who make their living with art though :(
I’ve been posting my art to the Internet for over 2 decades at this point. I’ve never popped off, but I always felt like there was some minuscule growth. Haven’t felt that way with social media for a while. I quit Facebook and Twitter like 5 years ago and haven’t looked back, my mental health is much better for it. I stopped posting art to Instagram almost entirely a couple years ago, and I don’t really plan to again, especially while all these companies are so gung ho to use my stuff for AI image regurgitators against my will. In general I don’t see myself posting art to the Internet in the near future. I’m considering giving Bluesky a look, but I also am just much happier without social media in my life and I don’t really want to start using one again. Lately any art I make is a commission or for myself, and I’m okay with that, it’s not really very different from when I posted my stuff online. The same amount of people are seeing it.
Personal opinion!!!: Question is why do people want engagement? If drawing is your hobby and you draw for engagement, you are doing it wrong. Masses are fickle, algorithm is not always kind, you WILL burnout and have depression in the long run. Dopamin addiction is real. If you want engagement for commercial purposes, then you need to see your art and your skills as a product. Draw a lot popular things, post a lot, engage with users, find good times to post based on timezones, give freebies now and then, improve your skills so people go "wow" even if you draw a shiny toilet - basically marketing. Would you find joy in making art, though? Well, like any job, it will be a lot of hard grind.
it should be simple, engagement is a way of validation and a way of what you create being pushed to others to see. same could be asked for anything, why did you or I post this comment right now? so that it could be seen and create discussions. same thing applies to art. your points about what to do for commercial success for art might've work in 2010s but in 2025 it's all invalidated and pointless. social media has shadow bans, algorithms that will screw the original artist over vs someone who reposts, AI accounts that mass produce art with prompts and win in the alogrithm just by that alone. the masses to an extent care about whether art is made by AI but the algorithms don't and thats what determines if ur art gets seen these days. people are allowed to find joy in making art but be disappointed when more people can't see the work they poured they heart and soul into. it doesn't have to be one or the other
@@ReiShs the thing is most people don't start thinking like that. From experience you really only want people to see what you're doing and enjoy it, even if it's a small number of people, but once you get that you start craving more and more engagement without realizing it, and the result is burnout and self doubt. People constantly see the 1% of online artists say how they only draw what they enjoy and then got lucky enough to turn it into a full time thing. We don't even realize that they are the exception, we just want to be like them. I personally know that despite wanting to go full time on art, it won't happen, and if it did I don't have the skills to maintain it. I don't market myself, I don't engage and keep up with numbers as most popular online artists do, so I really don't have the right to be envious of them when I'm not working as hard.
@chuckfinley-u8y Surely, but on the other hand, how do you make it fair to the viewer? Are you willing to go through a million art posts daily? Algorithm is definitely not perfect, but tags exist for a reason, and ironically, without algorithm, your art might not be viewed at all. I can see your point about validation, but I think it should be enjoyed with caution. It is easy to get used to likes. 10 were cool, then 50 are cool. At some point, anything below 1k feels like you did something wrong. I constantly see fellow artists lament about some of their art not doing well and saying they are wasting time, but... why even draw if you only do it for others? Is there joy in it anymore? Frankly, a dc server with like-minded individuals probably would provide you more of that validation than socials. I commented on the video to express my opinion, I never expected any engagement, tbh. My points about commercial use still apply - I see it every day in X and experience it myself. If I draw what is popular, I get a lot of traction compared to my account size. The same happens to my moots. I get people asking me in DMs for comms even though I don't offer any. Reposts are an issue, but owners of those accounts can't draw what customers want. The same applies to AI imagery users. I am not saying people are not allowed to feel the way you described, I am just pointing out that making yourself dependent on that sort of attention will ruin you. Once again, other users are not obligated to see or interract with your art.
@keeysOST yep. Totally agree. The art gods are popular because they market themselves and often have a team supporting them (I am sure, Sam doesn't edit his own videos, for example) - it is a full time job with a stony road. We only see the pretty.
What's the point of creating art if not to be shared and seen? Of course, artists want engagement with their craft! Frankly, I'm more likely to burn out if I create pieces I'm very satisfied with, and no one bats an eye. Worse than that would be pouring no love or effort into a drawing and it popping off. Why would I write a book if not for others to read it? Why would I make a song if not for others to listen to it? Why do people treat drawn arts differently to other mediums in these kinds of arguments?
You've really hit the nail on the head with this one. It doesn't matter your skill level, especially these days with AI slop just overwhelming peoples' feeds. They tune out and scroll, and don't notice when they're scrolling past the actual art because it's buried. On the other hand, I follow a bunch of artists of a variety of skill levels, and I've seen scribbles and shitposts take off, while portraits that took hours or even days of work just die and get buried. Hell, my most popular social media post IS a shitpost, took about thirty seconds to post and required less than an ounce of effort. It's fun to have a moment of popularity but it suuuucks to look at things you put actual work into that get utterly ignored.
Artists need to get out into the world and share their art in person. The internet is just a place people can look you up for contact info and maybe a portfolio.
You know, I kind of wish I started posting online sooner. I've neen drawing since 2014 but I rarely ever let anyone see my art, which is why it took me until 2021 to start posting online. I did have somewhat of a healthy grow on my first twitter account before ultimately deleting it because i felt burnt out and unmotivated.
as an artist who has very good art skills, has been seriously drawing for almost a decade, and has gone to art school- it's deadass just the algorithm. my shit gets two likes. it used to be better in the mid 2010s, but it's really bad now, i think tumblr is still holding on but you gotta build community to get engagement, and if you do original stuff it's harder to get engagement. and if you post not in english you're just screwed.
It is tough. Had an art account with 500 plus plus followers but since alot of them were ghost because I have had this account for years on ig I decided to make a new one, What Im doing now is mainly trying to improve the quality of my work. The state of social media is a highly competitive environment for artists. I find that alot of the people who are successful are people who are highly consistent and their art stands out in some way shape or form. If your a beginner its very difficult to remain motivated in this kind of environment. Artists may see some form of initial success if their are lucky but what it really comes down to is what you can establish for the long term. You need to find your why. For me its learning art in such a way to where Id stand out against ai. Ai is still in a state where it is increasingly generic, melty, and cant get proportions and anatomy right in alot of cases.
Its gotten so so bad. Kind of considering dropping social media because even though I really want to do art as a career and the only way to do that is to have eyes on you, it just doesnt really seem like its working out for me, or for any other small artists. It does...well, I guess, although that may be that I post manga colorings and not my own personal art (didn't let me opt out of AI training). At least ArtFight got me when it comes to positive comments 🌻 Can't wait for July
I never cared for follows or likes. I prefer to have a small community of fans and other artists, mainly other artists, and support and talk with one another. Over two years of posting my work online on X, I’ve met and friended other smaller to medium artists, and I am grateful for that!
Socialmedia algorythms promote not quality (I mean kinda based on user engagement) but mostly frequency and timing. If you will post regularly like 5-10 posts a day (retweets also count), which in art I don't think it's possible, then algorythm wil promote your stuff more (right after blue checkmark subscribers...). The time you post is also a huge factor, there are hours when naturally more people will visit X and hours when there will be less people (school, job etc.) Also nsfw stuff has higher chance of engagement obviously.
8:53 That happened to me constantly on Twitter I'd be making post that pop of but my account was lil and had 400 followers 💀 Now i got rid of my twitter though
I don't do art on twitter, I have a lot of followers but little to no interaction on my posts. Imo having a small following of only 100-200 people is better than 1000+ because they interact with you a lot more
I think only way to get attention on social media now a day is attention bait And even that is not guaranteed Oh well not like it matter Sometime my comment on social media get more view than what i post
Luck and skill doesn't account for effort in actually seeking your audience. so many people just think posting is good enough because they're used to tiktok doing the work for them.
whats helped me with twitter is using communities and posting fanart there, doesnt get you much more likes, but thanks to the marvel rivals community i was able to get 40 likes, and i usually get 0 likes on my posts, my replies get seen more than my art and it sucks. Also try tagging accounts that relate to your art, i tagged a berserk art account and they retweeted my art and gave me a few followers and some likes.
ive been wanting to go back on social media to post my art again after taking the last 10 months off, does that sound like a good idea or anything i should keep in mind?
Social media was not and never will be designed with things like art in mind. Their all about high engagement driven posts and whatever drives said engagement and with the couple of seconds being the AVERAGE of how long a regualr social media user spends looking at content they will not care about your art unless its depicting a meme or is somehow related to recent popular culture for them to easily digest it. Also its a horrible format to try and archive anything, most people will not go trough your blog to see more of your creations and the only way to entice them to keep being your followers is to keep churning out whatever might entertain a majority of them. Social media is pure cancer.

Your first mistake was going on Instagram to post art
Artists are screwed over in Instagram because the algorithm favors braindead memes
It isn't a very good platform for artists
Me i barely get any kind of engagement anywhere besides on TH-cam when i actually put something up, and even then it's very little

The time you post is also a huge factor, there are hours when naturally more people will visit X and hours when there will be less people (school, job etc.) Also nsfw stuff has higher chance of engagement obviously.

That happened to me constantly on Twitter
I'd be making post that pop of but my account was lil and had 400 followers 💀
Now i got rid of my twitter though
I don't do art on twitter, I have a lot of followers but little to no interaction on my posts. Imo having a small following of only 100-200 people is better than 1000+ because they interact with you a lot more
Agreed, there's a lot less pressure.
I think only way to get attention on social media now a day is attention bait
And even that is not guaranteed
Oh well not like it matter
Sometime my comment on social media get more view than what i post
I would suggest for real artist to use a tag like notaiart or realpainter
Social media was not and never will be designed with things like art in mind. Their all about high engagement driven posts and whatever drives said engagement and with the couple of seconds being the AVERAGE of how long a regualr social media user spends looking at content they will not care about your art unless its depicting a meme or is somehow related to recent popular culture for them to easily digest it. Also its a horrible format to try and archive anything, most people will not go trough your blog to see more of your creations and the only way to entice them to keep being your followers is to keep churning out whatever might entertain a majority of them. Social media is pure cancer.
i do not understand why there's bots following you on twitter, there's like nothing on their accounts
omfg i got an ad about joining the army on this vid
Pixiv is also great for NSFW artists as well! You can upload illustrations and comics too.
As an artist, NEVER post on Twitter. Latest ToS update made it possible to feed your posts to generative AI of Twitter
super cool art btw
I respect the realness.
beer, potato chips, wasabi 😊
Bluesky sucks too i barely see art there lol
What else is new :')
AI image generator sould credit Artist and get permission to use the style of there art. AI is good for dangerous task
