Was Jesus a Revolutionary?

- Jesus is often described as being a revolutionary within modern church settings, a practice that - inadvertently or otherwise - vilifies the Jewish culture he came from. Was he a radical? Dr. Levine joins Megan to talk about recovering the lives of women in 1st century C.E. Jewish communities, and about her presentation for the upcoming conference, "New Insights in the New Testament".

First time hearing Dr. Levine. Now I need more!
14:30 "how do you know that?" Nice channel tagline drop. (I'm not saying Dr Levine's mom was clairvoyant - it was as excellent a question then as it is today. It just amused me to note the parallel)
Please, please, please, have Dr. Levine for a more extended conversation !
Hi Megan (: can I ask will the atheist handbook to the Old Testament vol 1 be made available on kindle format? To date only vol 2 is available on kindle
Love that Rabbi Sandy was mentioned. She and Dennis oversaw my conversion.
Wow, this was a really good interview!
Cheers for all your hard work!
To quote the late, great Ginger Baker, "This is a foul deed." 😂
Awesome video, thanks a bunch
Could not be less interested in a children's book written by this person
Woot! Love Dr. Levine!
That was brilliant!
thanks
keep up the good work
Great work
Dr. Levine is great! Grateful for what she is doing to expand our view of the 1st century.
I highly recommend the Jewish Annotated New Testament, edited by AJ Levine
(Obligatory Grandad comment)
That reminds me, I need some new welders goggles.
Heck yeah he was! He was against Roman imperialism, Temple and Torah dogmatism, and he was financed by Gentile women who had equal positions in his movement.
Megan is gorgeous, her teeth is also so beautiful.
She didn't say much if anything about Jesus being or not being a revolutionary.Seemed to be quite a lot about her life story ...
The first and basically only person Yeshua straight up (plainly) told he was the Messiah was the Samaritan woman.....then he appeared first to Mary.....after his resurrection. The significance in these two appearances were and are....😅 ...above mosts' comprehension and most over look the importance of the significance of such. Even things being edenic or pre Edenic in restoration ...Eve was not named by Adam but only after the fall. Well what does this say ...in regards to the curse 🤔 ....question? But an answer in closer examination to subjugation and the role reversal of negating the curses through the accursed one ...who was blessed through the curse(s)....
Probably learned this in india when there .the lost 18 yrs.😢
Yes he was. Liberal and progressive
Out of the 12 to rule with him in the new Kingdom he didn’t include a single woman - see The Bad Jesus the ethics of NT ethics by Hector Avalos for much more
You mean that the gospel writers didn’t include a single woman. The existence of Jesus and his merry men are by no means certain, but his miracles and him being a perfect person is definitely not true. Check out the claims about the other (earlier) dying-and-rising gods, which are very similar, and also look at the meaning of a Mary Sue in literature, which describes Jesus perfectly (no pun intended).
You shouldn’t believe everything ancient writers tell you.
@@kellydalstok8900then your best argument for Jesus being a feminist is that all the records of him show he wasn’t but we can’t trust the sources so we really don’t know
Are you sure about that? There’s strong indication of women apostles.
@@CarlosAlvarado04zero female apostles. Apostles are different than disciples.
Men have removed the books that are about women. Even God new he needed a woman to create Jesus otherwise he would have made Jesus from a rib
✌️ 'promosm'
Hah! Is this an age projection? The chicks are the same girl just 40 years later. Lol🎉
To me, a former Christian, jesus represents a current in first century Jewish culture that is inclusive of women's study of religious texts. It seems near impossible that he was unique, if so the push back against it would have been recorded in at least one gospel yet we never hear of more traditional and patriarchal Jewish leaders criticising him for permitting it.
But Greeks kept women under purdah too, who said the Israelites were any worse, don't get it.
Timothy 2:11-12 Let The woman learn in silence with all subjection 12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man but to be in silence
Corinthians 14:34-35 Let your women keep silence in the churches for it is not permitted unto them to speak but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law and if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home for it is a shame for women to speak in the church
Matthew 5:17-18 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Timothy and Corinthians are not the teachings of Jesus. And Matthew is dodging the question "are you a heretic"
@@marklamourine3130 Pick out the verses you like and ignore the ones you don't "are you an idiot"
@@truthgiver8286 I simply think the respondent was reminding us that all these passages are best understood within their original contexts. While Timothy and Corinthians are accepted Christian scripture, the fact remains that they were composed after Jesus' death and don't necessarily reflect his own positions. For that matter, all the Gospels were composed after Jesus' death as well, and are flawed historical sources in retrieving Jesus the man (though unfortunately they're almost all we have to go on for this matter).
@@truthgiver8286 the question being asked is "was Jesus a feminist" and then you cite only not-jesus. Is Paul feminist isn't the question
@@marklamourine3130 You brought Paul into it not me.
👎 Ugh we get it
I don't think you do lol.
@@chadatchison145
How many times must "I'm a woman. A Jewish Woman" be brought up? Ad nauseum?
@@Dharmophylax Lol wtf are you talking about?
@@chadatchison145 Did you watch the video, or are you just commenting?
So we have a Jewish Woman talking about first century Evyon movement, which is fine. But what about something more neareastern and more important for the evolution of Judaism.
Dr Levine within the bible there is a group of text scholars think are the oldest, and within that text there is a source that is likely the oldest known source and its a song for woman about women. But noone seems to want to discuss this song or the neareastern context for which it belongs, nor why there is only one female judge or why the hero of the story is a kenite woman. Tell me why was the song so important that it was preserved as a source for over 400 years?
Im sure this will be rich. Jesus isnt a commie maam.
"Jesus isnt a commie maam." - all you easily triggered fools really have issues far beyond Dr. Levine.
Jesus was no feminist
He didn't want man like women
Your comment illustrates that you're a weak minded person who gets buthurt by video titles lol.
Here is an interesting verse in the apocrypha gospel of Thomas : [114] ‘Simon Peter said to Jesus : let Mary (Magdalen) leave, for women are not worthy of life!’
Jesus said : ‘I myself shall lead her in order to make her male, so that she too may become a living spirit resembling you males. for every woman who will make herself male will enter the kingdom of heaven’…
@@Apocalyptiseptical
Jesus wanted trans women in heaven
Sounds misogynist
@@fortunatomartino8549 I think it’s a little bit deeper than that
