This Murray RER was part of a trade deal I got 3 mowers for one sale. This ran and cut but had low compression due to a valve issue. I ground down the exhaust valve and it now works much better. After that, the ignition started acting up so I replaced the starter solenoid and ignition switch and also cleaned the contacts which fixed that. Then, the plastic deck pulley seized. I replaced that and it finally was good to go after that. I hate working on these!

As far as I can tell, the old Murray RER with a Tecumseh engine were the most basic form of riding mower available in the 1980s and 1990s in form and function. They were standard stock at your local Walmart for years and years. I have never had the displeasure of working on one, but I have cut grass with a few of them. All I can honestly say is that I am shocked that they even performed as well as they did for as long as they did. On the used mower market around me, you can usually pick up a Murray Wide Body or Classic for nearly the same money as a RER (if you look around a little and “shake the trees”) and the latter two are a far better deal. The RER were largely disposable mowers for small, flat lawns and small, light weight riders. At least the older ones like this had metal bodies. Nice job getting this one going. At least for me, it is very difficult and frustrating to spend time on a machine you really don’t like or believe in.

For everything involved in selling one of these for $250 it's almost not even worth it. Most Widebody Murray mowers I sell for about $350 and they are a far better tractor. The plastic deck pulley really turned me off.

I've got a couple of these types. I drilled out the spot welds and removed the surrounding back wrap around steel fenders or whatever you call them. They aren't needed and make working on the things way to difficult.

Think I have to do a valve job on the cub I have, fairly easy, plus when my Father passed, I got most of his small engine tools, valve seat cutter included, good luck

A leak down test is always in order before deciding a course of action like this..
    Good luck.

I bought new a Murray Select rider way back and mowed my yard with it for 11 years and only thing I ever had done too it was have a new drive belt put on it and sold it for $400.00 . Murray use to make a good mower the select version . Not sure if the black select version is made anymore . Mine had a 11 horse powered Briggs on it . Dynamite engine . 😉 I could be wrong but don't think so that mine had a metal deck pulley - Wow mine was an select also , just can't picture a plastic pulley .

I was very surprised to see the plastic pulley. I pulled this one off its Craftsman twin which also had a plastic pulley. These aren't worth more than about $250 nowadays and this one was pretty much fully sorted.

Great video. I think a rolling tool cart kinda deal would be good for u especially making videos. You could set it up with wrenches. Sockets. Etc

Thank you, I do have a couple rolling carts, it's just a matter of where they are when I need them haha.

@@EllisMowersandmore You did great. This was more satisfying to remedy than some of the others.
