  • Whilst Swinefleet might be the largest village in the marshlands, this one is most certainly the prettiest. I don't think there's any denying that. This is another elongated village, with more than a few things dotted along it's length, of interest.
Beginning with the hall, a Georgian building in itself well worth a lot of time, we pass an abundance of nice houses, ones that certainly do their best to up the average price of property here. The local pub is home to a Sunday Carvery, as well as being a campsite too for those that enjoy the caravanning lifestyle. There's a village shop that's a Jack-of-all-trades, and the former chapel was once used by a farmer to store his machinery. Only in the sticks eh?
The River Ouse only fleetingly comes close to the village, and when it does, it's fought off with huge walls, forming a robust flood defence. n places the Ouse has been known to burst it's banks though still, so there are regular river level checks here, and at the point where it does enter close quarters there's a primary school, serving the entire parish.
Swinefleet Peat Works was actually located in this parish and not in Swinefleet, oddly, being just over the border. The derelict remains of the works are still standing, although we don't see them in the video, there will be a special section of The Parish Noticeboard that covers them, that's not the kind of thing I want to wait a further 169 videos for, for the East Yorkshire roundup!
Ladies and gentleman, I give you the parish of REEDNESS.

The house passed left at around 2.00 is owned by a local wealthy property developer. He hosted his daughter's wedding reception in ot's grounds. Live music was provided by one Chico Slimani. The Half Moon's most famous regular was the lady who played Marina in Last of the Summer Wine

I'm not sure I would like living next to a river that size which has to be held in by those walls. When you walked along the road those houses looked well below the height of the wall. Has the wall ever broken. Anyway it was a good video as always.

Thanks! Yes I think they are below the level of the river. I think there's decent drainage but yeah I would imagine it's a little scary at times

The derelict chapel is currently being transformed into a house by a local builder
