Caress of Steel is such a monster of an album. I've never understood why it is looked down upon so much, other than that it wasn't a financial success. The album totally jams.
I’ve always loved this album. Just like you, I never understood why it was looked down upon so much as well. The reason why I think it didn’t sell that much and is looked down on is that going from Fly By Night to this, it was kind of a big surprise and I think many people didn’t get it. But, us Rush fans love it.
Me either man! I found Rush in high school (Permanent Waves was my initial breakthrough; I’d listen to the whole album just about every day for a long time), and before long I was deep into their 70s and early 80s catalog (still by far my favorite era). For whatever reason, I was really big on a few of those albums and just kinda forgot about others until later. After I got to see them live for the first and only time on the R40 tour, my Rush world kept expanding. I remember Xanadu totally blowing my mind live, and I soon started listening to A Farewell to Kings in its entirety often, and started really getting into Fly By Night as well (By-Tor is another incredibly underrated Rush tune!). By this time, I knew every early album in its entirety except for Caress of Steel. I was a huge fan of the Beyond the Lighted Stage doc, and for whatever reason, that doc just made it seem to me like Caress of Steel wasn’t worth listening to, and despite LOVING every bit of the 70s prog era Rush, I just kinda ignored that album for years (aside from a few songs like Bastille Day). It wasn’t until about a year ago that I really dug in CoS (I’m almost 25, so it’s been about 9 years since I started listening to Rush), and finally catching Fountains of Lamneth felt like discovering a brand new Rush prog epic for me (I guess it felt that way to me because that’s exactly what it was to me, lol) and it is one of my absolute favorites now. All that to say that it took me far too long to give this album a chance despite loving literally every single song from 1975-1982 and Hemispheres being my absolute favorite album. Needless to say, I’ve listened to the other prog epics hundreds of times and know every single beat of every single section of all of those songs, but because FoL is still relatively new to me, it is still mysterious and magical every time I listen to it, and I LOVE that feeling. Like I said, it’s like suddenly discovering another epic prog Rush song from my favorite era even though I’m DEEP into all of their other songs from the era. Not sure why it took me so long to even give it a chance, but now that I have it has certainly become one of my favorite Rush songs and albums. I guess it really was just that doc that kinda led me to push it aside in my mind, but now discovering it years later is incredible to me. An absolutely fantastic classic 70s prog Rush song and album that certainly doesn’t get enough praise even within the Rush community.
didacts = teachers narpets = anagram of parents parents & teachers it's an anti-authority thing from Neil, in case anyones wondering about the names xD
You are a Neil Peart expert! So much effort and time! It has paid off. If I had to a fellow drummer who can play Rush the best, I would to just check out your page, and will do so!
My God! Didacts and Narpets... what Will Maher said! I’m speechless! But the whole song is perfectly executed. I marvel at the patience, not to mention the amazing skill it took to learn the whole song. Very very impressive!
People dog on this album because it didn't have a radio hit but the first time I heard it over 40 years ago I was blown away, a masterpiece in my opinion just about as much as any of their other albums
Caress of Steel, particularly this side of the album, turned me on to rush. I’ve been a hard core fan ever since. Never heard a drummer cover this before. Great job!
Loved this song forever. You straight up killed it!! I never got to see Neal play this live. That always bothered me, because its such an epic song. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to see it performed live.
One of the most difficult Rush songs to play on all instruments that not many people know about. I know I’m gonna sound crazy to some people but this song is as good as 2112 if not better than it, imo. Incredible Job, Sterling!! 🥁🤘🏻
@@highviewbarbell Yes. I know, but he didn’t play on any studio material. The “new” material in 1974 that Neil played on was Fancy Dancer and Garden Road.
@@nickavenoso7851 weren't they playing anthem at the very least like super early? It was before the album, after he joined. And on a side note I remember fancy dancer from some bootleg recording, always liked that track and garden Grove wasn't bad
@@highviewbarbell I don’t remember that. They were playing Best I Can when John Rutsey was still in the band, but don’t know about Anthem. There’s a recording of them with Neil at the Agora Ballroom in 1974. That’s where the recording of Fancy Dancer and Garden Road comes from.

I will say the cover band for you would only be geddy and Alex.. the only ones who can make this sound 99.9 percent of what Neil sounded.. simply the best rush cover drummer period..
Your vids are amazing man! You have all of Peart's stuff down pat. Great stuff!! I was curious how you keep in time with the older stuff since they didn't record with a click and do a lot of subtle pushing and pulling w tempos? That would be really hard to come in on time with all the cues like you do! Also curious why your rack toms seem tuned down pretty low, the heads almost seem loose. Is that intentional? Keep killing it man!!
AWESOME JOB WITH THE MINI DRUM SOLO PART- I KNOW THAT TAKES A LOT OF EFFORT(GOOD TO BE YOUNG )- IF YOU ARE A DRUMMER,YOU KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT- GREAT THROUGHOUT
Had to add another comment. Who is this drummer Sterling Fuentes? He seems almost autistic in his disciplined playing! And I mean that as a high compliment! You are amazing, Sterling! Ever thought of doing Liquid Tension Experiment’s, Acid Rain? I should probably look on your channel.
This is soft, the way ‘Fly By Night’ is soft. Neil tries to be a bit soft on Fly By Night. I’m not sure he’s know for being soft and subtle. Sometimes he is.

Some Rush fans are stingy and can't handle light hearted songs like Going Bald. Neil can be funny sometimes, it's okay.
@@queen-buggo Neil wrote it but it came from a line that Alex came up with.
Didacts and Narpets was Earth shattering. Bravo.

Well done. Never thought I'd see this covered. More from Neil's 74-76 period. Loving it (Like the Phil-Genesis covers as well). Cheers
