IMO England are something like 6th or seventh best in the world. The part where I disagree with almost everyone is that Gareth Southgate is not the problem. I believe the squad as a whole is not as good as people think. Interestingly I think that if all the players on England's roster (especially players like Grealish, Sancho and Foden) are at peak fitness and are playing near their best at the time of the tournament england would rise to 3rd or 4th best in the world. Sadly, nearly every tournament most of England's players are exhausted mentally/physically from an excessive domestic schedule, which is a combination of domestic tournaments and the premier league, and often players are just coming back from injuries.....think Henderson, Maguire, Grealish and Sancho this past euros. English football is not designed to help the English national team, nor is it designed to aid in the development in native English talent. Football in England primarily serves as a cash cow for International billionaires like kroenke, the glazers, the Saudi Arabian royal family etc. Why would anyone think that these detached oligarchs care about the good of England and the payers it produces. Often times I hear people say that less games or a winter break would be coddling the English players. This has nothing to do with the heart of the issue. I would not lessen the load out of a misplaced sense of false compassion for the players but instead because I would like to have a team of physically fit and sharp players like Spain seems to always have (even when they disappoint in a tournament) instead of lethargic, exhausted and half-injured players like England had at the 2010, and 2006 World Cup, and the 2016 euros. Lastly, a problem that used to affect England greatly but is less relevant now is the lack of skillful technical players in general and particularly on the wings and in central midfield. This last problem was only recently addressed by the English FA around 2012, and is only bearing fruit since the 2021 euros.

@@denethorofgondor4567 a lot of excuses and misconceptions to what England football is all about. It’s the foreign influence that powers English football. Without it English football sucks. I think that goes without saying. English players exhausted? It’s not just them though is it? Our top teams consist of a bunch of foreign players (who are also exhausted) along with only a few English players who play for England. Reality is and always has been… England are not good enough because English players are not that great. Hopefully one day they will be, but they aren’t and haven’t been for decades. We have had some really good talent and we continue to have good talent. Other nations are just superior. That’s how it usually goes down.

I think that playing catenaccio against Italy was one of the worst tactics I've ever seen. Especially as Italy was not playing catenaccio but attacking consistently, with England all in defense.
That Italy was the worst I've seen in my life, in terms of talent, but they were a group.
England was one of the best England sides, I lived in London for 16 years, but the tactics were counter productive and they were waiting for time to pass. It was just a matter of time before we scored, and honestly it shoudln't even gone to penalties. But it did, and in the end it was fine margins that made us win it. With a better and more positive attitude, England should have won it.
Good luck for the WC, with a better attitude, England has good chances, and depending on the draw, can make a statement.

@@spendover My pleasure, I called England home for many years and I have a lot of friends there, so I know how important is to win in football there too.
Italy is out to WC after losing one game in 3 years...well, we need more goal scorers, that's it. It is not a top squad, and maybe if we played the old way of defending and counter attack maybe we would have won, but it's the right way forward and maybe this will shake players to concentrate on other skills. In the end football has cycles, many nations didn't qualify before (England and France in the 90s for example) and now are top level, so the only way is up, I hope.
As we say in Italy "There isn't 2 without 3, so...let's hope on the next WC) ;)

Southgate got us to the semi final and the final due to favourable draws and then when his management skills were needed he lost us both the games. Against Croatia everyone was screaming out for a change which he didn't do and then Against and ageing Italy side we got a lucky goal in the second minute and then for the next 88/92mins it was 10 men behind the ball. Everyone was saying around the 55th minute take back control of the midfield and we win the game but he didn't do it. Then in the penalty shoot out grealish puts his hand up to take a penalty but Southgate didn't allow him to take one. Instead he asks a 18 year old kid in the biggest game he'll probably ever play in to take the last kick clearly seeing how badly he was struggling in that game. That's not it he brings on Rushford who didn't even warm up properly and sancho who didn't even get many minutes. My view is Southgate lost us both winnable games due to his tactical ineptitude. If the same thing happens in Qatar it'll be time to beg Pep to come and take over this squad of players.

Everyone wants to disagree with Simon, and usually because they have no clue! Keown is like Murphy a yes man and a plank!

Not a massive fan of Simon but he's so correct. Literally bang on the money. Wtf Is Keown talking about it... Italy had 1 attack and scored?? They were battering us 35 minutes onwards, anyone with a brain could see that goal was coming. Southgate deserves plenty of praise for bringing the squad together but tactically he's not on that level.

I’m Brazilian and I want Brazil to play against the top teams in the group stage. Like that I will find out straight way if they can do well. England must play against the difficult teams on the group stage to see how good they are. It’s not good play easy group. Brazil has been give fake hope every time they play against easy group

It's the English mentality. We don't have that winning mentality that to be the best you have to beat the best. It's more about survival and hoping for a miracle.

As soon as we play a decent side in knockout stages we are shown to be what we really are. Everyone gets excited beating crap sides in the qualifiers but when the big guns appear just not good at game management hope we have learned this time.

Gareth didnt just replicate his mistakes against Croatia in the final, he’s replicating the same mistakes he made at Boro. I remember boro playing arsenal, we went 1-0 and then we just sat back hitting long to arsenal just inviting attack after attack we knew an equaliser was coming but he never changed it, they equalised late on.

Keown is so far out of his depth.
Southgate failed in the last two tournaments because, ultimately we were there to win it.
We've progressed for sure and that is highly commendable.
But, ultimately the aim is to win, and at that Southgate has failed.
He has his chance in Qatar, but if he fails again, its time to look at another manger.
The best thing Southgate can do is to progress himself and believe in a principal of risk and taking a chance and seeing that opportunity.

Simon is dead right, Southgate didn't react to system changes by the opponents in the big games.

I was on the plane to Brazil in 2014 and down wandered a shaven headed Keown with a beer in hand from first class “you off to Brazil lads?”. Absolute fucking class and had time for everyone. Proper nutter but a nice bloke!

Simon is spot on. When we come up against a top side we fail and Southgate gets out thought tactically. He's not totally at fault though, he's not on the pitch. The players need to take some responsibility

I think the point Keown misses from Jordan is that Southgate seems unable to adapt in real-time, in game, when things aren’t working he’s unable to come up with solutions. Yes he’s adapted his system since 2018 , but whatever system it is, top nations in big semis and finals find ways to counteract it and so far Southgate has shown he is unable to deal with this.

    Excellent analysis from Simon.
After the Euros anyone who criticised St Gareth was treated as a heretic.
The simple fact is that for the World Cup and the Euros we had the easiest run in possible.
We have possibly the best, most skillful squad since '96.
Where we have failed is with Southgate's tactical ineptitude and his inability to make changes on the fly and adapt to what is happening on the pitch.
I'm always reminded of Mike Tyson's quote 'everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face'. That will be Southgate's epitaph.
I can accept England losing, I realise you simply cannot win everything. What I can't accept though is the boring, negative football we play under Southgate - there is no joy in the game.
After the Euros I remember feeling depressed knowing that the result would mean we'd have Southgate for the WC and potentially we would squander yet another chance to win the trophy that has eluded us since 1966

Ultimately you parachute a manager like Howe or Potter in and England have likely won the euros and the World Cup and are challenging for another cup. Southgate has lucked out on the most talented group of English players in decades and yet continually refuses to use the most talented ones (Foden Grealish Sancho Tomori) relying on the same players that were vaguely functional in 2018 like Maguire And Sterling. His obsession with Kane even when he’s out of form when you have great strikers like Abraham on the bench is insane. He’s not a bad manager but he’s like Ole good vibes and no tactics

or you can just realize you don't have solid enough CBs to play an attacking system hence you need to protect the goal. Knockout tournaments are most often won by non-attractive teams. Look at Chelsea!

Southgate has so much attacking talent in his team but he will prob go for a back 5 with 2 DMs and put Bellingham on the bench. Grealish Sancho, Sterling, Foden, Maddison, Kane, Saka and others.

I've been critical of Simon in the past, sometimes unfairly so. In recent weeks I've changed my mind. He is 200 percent correct here. The opportunities were there in 2018 and 2021. Southgate is just like Ole; scared of losing.
