Is the end result like charcoal or is it just burnt into the canvas? Will it smear?

Yep, it can definitely smear so I put a protective coating over the top of it.

Wow, I can picture the texture of designs on the backs of bows done with gunpowder under a thin layer of sinew. Earth, air, fire, water, animal, plant mineral... Bow, quiver, arrows with stone points.. Deep, very deep.
