  • I needed to move some Iris in my Secret Garden to make room for a better garden design. I decided to go ahead and video it for you. This corresponds well with my other video on dividing Iris.
It is late January here in the mountains of N. California and we are experiencing warmer than normal temperatures so I am able to dig and replant things. Typically digging up and moving Iris would be done in Fall.
I don't always get to things when it is optimum time so I fit it in when I can. These Iris may not bloom as prolifically as they would if I had moved them in Fall but I most likely will still get blooms in Spring.

I share how I garden and even if I don't follow the rules I have great success.

I plant all that I want to keep and give away those that I have more than enough of.

Why do you trim the leaves back?

Because Iris are so shallow rooted they tend to topple if the leaves are left long and that pulls them out of the ground. When you order Iris from growers they will come with the leaves shortened. Done at the proper time they rhizome will have reserved plenty of food for the next seasons bloom, so this way the energy it put into growing roots.

I just dug some up to move. And several have a super long root, long as a carrot! What do I do?
