Someone just watching this walkthrough without having played the game would have no idea how difficult this is. It has to be one of the most unforgiving games I've ever had. Anyway, I'm glad I can finally dee all the levels now... thanks for posting it!
true, @@madzen112 , they skipped a good chunk of the Chessboard level because it's otherwise a very boring boss fight. Ok, because there was the 10 minute limit back then, but still....it's not the most exciting level. Interesting twist how the music does have a few notes descending every few minutes.
I can never describe how much my little 5 year old brain was blown away by this game back in the day, I mean yes it was nothing like seeing it in the arcade but still I just couldn't see back then how a home computer would ever do better lol
The arcade version was a definite mindblow with its interactive graphics, which for that time was unheard of. This was more of "there was an attempt." I played it briefly. I know some people liked it. But it was a hard game with depressing graphics. On the other hand games like Marble Madness were genuinely amazing. And then there were games like Boulder Dash which even my parents loved to play.
I recently got a Commodore 64 and this was one of the games I got with it. It may not be arcade-perfect in terms of graphics, but in terms of the frustration.....yeah, they nailed that shit RIGHT ON THE HEAD.
Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't expect the c64 to replicate laserdisc-quality Don bluth animation, but the frustration is there. so why did the NES version have to be such a POS?
now that's some weird gameplay... i remember the game being practically unplayable. this must've been some really hard work, congratulations :-) and thanks for showing me everything beyond the 2nd screen... ;-)
wow, thank you for posting this, still remember i was like 7 years old, i was never able to get passed that 1st level where the spider is, annoyingly hard game, this is the first time ever that I am able to see that there is something past that level!! 20+ years later!
I remember being so thrilled as a kid when I finally beat this, second elevator drove me nuts and the knight fight. Even after all this time I remember how slightly/mildly disappointed Singe looks at you, after you stab him in the back @ 8:57 almost as if to say " I can't believe you have done this"
:) Loved this game.... I dont think i ever passed the chessboard stage so i never saw got to see the ending.. Thanks for posting... after like, over 20 years i finally get to see it... Great work!
Nach all den vielen Jahren kann ich mich nun entspannt zurücklehnen und sagen, ich habe das Ende von Dragon's Lair gesehen^^ Hat auch lange genug gedauert^^
The next screen was just Dirk standing there and the music from the 3rd level was playing. And that was it...couldn't get out of the game or anything. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks for posting. I had this game when I was about 13 for the C64. I never got past the part where you have to row a boat through the underground dungeon and I was always curious about how the rest of the game looked. Now I know.
One of the most difficult games i have ever played. I was 10 years or something back then and my older brother played Dragons Lair often. It was great to see and learn, but i believe no one of us guys has ever saved the huge princess. Great to see at least.
Holy shit I had this game as a kid and forgot all about it. I was obsessed with Dragon's Lair and this was like the only home version available at the time.
You know the original 64 joystick really was horrible, so we took our Odyssey 2 joysticks apart, and wired them into the 64, and this game rocked with them. (Every time the joystick broke, just bought another used Odyssey 2.)
That ad was probably just illustrating the laserdisc used for the original arcade game. The C64 didn't really have anything more advanced than 3&1/2" floppies by the end of its life, though people have since made adapters for hard drives and flash cards that would make a real arcade conversion a possibility.
I hated this on the CBM64. It makes sense as a way to make you pay in an arcade as its literally trial-and-error for how to deal with a lot of it (jump? which direction? hit?) On a home PC it's just random death for the sake of it until you guess what to do.
I spent I countless hours trying to get past that garbled stuff (bushes?) on the Singe level. I could never get past it, thanks for showing it was possible.
Got through all the levels in the end of the 80 s. And Dragons L 2. All on 64. Must have loaded those floppy disks until they were grey. Remember i spent lots of time figuring out the puzzle. And in those days if you made a mistake, back to square 1. Still love the sounds and soundtrack!
Oh wow. I had this game for the C64 when I was ten years old. Difficult to say the least! I did not advance nearly as far as this. I never knew what most of this game was like.
cool! thanks man. I would to hear the running tunnel music if you ever get a chance to capture that scene. I still remember the song - i was mesmerized by it because it sounded like my c64 was singing "la la la" (voice reproduction).
Dirk sticks the sword into the dragon... : Hmm... Let's see...that appears to be an uncomfortable situation in my side there. Rather pointy and somewhat painful. I feel as though I may have to do something about that at a later time. Maybe I could...
This video brought back memories. I downloaded an illegal copy of this from a BBS and somewhere during the download, it crashed, so I only downloaded like a 1/4 of the game and talk about screwed up. The falling platform, the cloud would appear about 20 times before you could jump off. At times you could literally run on the air. When you jumped off the platform...you had to press up, right, up, right, up right, up, right to make it into the tunnel without falling off
This must be the PAL version. The controls are screwed up in the falling platform levels, and everything's blue in the first couple of rooms. NTSC EA release was improved
Love this, but was surprised that two of the levels look more "blue" than they did on my computer, both stages 2 and 4 I recall were grey in the background. Making them blue kind of changes the atmosphere. Any idea why the change in colors? Or are there 2 or more variations?
I feel like Singe the Dragon is somewhat misunderstood. He just wanted to check her out for a while. Now he's got a major headache and a perforated back. Don't fuck with humans!
I think my copy of this was glitched, I could never get past the last pit by the dragon even after having him torch it time after time. On the other side of my floppy disk was the Escape from Singe's Castle. At least I was able to beat that.
It was so frustrating because if you die, you have to sit back and watch the death and resurrection scene for the 1millioth time, at least with the sequel you could skip it simply by pressing the joystick button.
This was the first Dragon's Lair I played, and I could never get past the second screen, up, down, button, what? Could never figure it out, and haven't tried it again in years!
Hey, wait a minute... this looks just like the version that came out for the Coleco ADAM Computer??!! So, I guess the question of the day is... who programmed this game??? And was it originally programmed for the ADAM computer or for the Commodore-64?? I think it came out for the ADAM first!! Anyone know for sure???
We had seriously high expectations for this game because of the arcade version, which had amazing cartoon graphics, if you remember. This didn't really fulfill that, but had amazing Rob Hubbard music, which more than made up for it :)
I had this game copied on a disc from a neighborhood kid and would try and play it on my Commodore 128. It never worked. It would hang on the loading screen with the castle. But that didn’t stop me from watching it for a half hour at a time hoping it would load. One time it did.
I made it to the fifth level... thank you for your respect! Yes it was patience-testing... and in this video you don't even have to bear the multiload! I had the game on tape, it was terrible! And I actually paid for it... but I loved Dragon's Lair so much.
One of the weirdest and surrealistic game ever made... It strange how far can imagination can brings you. The authors ot this games were under acid when they created it for sure. Great job.

A lot more than just 10 minutes of gameplay

Couldn't get past the first stage with those clouds blowing you off. Never played it again. hahah
This shit was damn near impossible for a 5-10 y/o kid.. lol
Agreed
Also for a 13 year old, fwiw.
@@tomincanada I agree
I was there too.
I couldn't even get past the cloud 😐
I miss you, childhood trauma.
I never made it past the first descent. Satisfying to see more of the game lol. After all of these years!
same here.
And same here .. 😅

It may not be arcade-perfect in terms of graphics, but in terms of the frustration.....yeah, they nailed that shit RIGHT ON THE HEAD.
Yeah, this demo doesn't do the frustration justice: It was a ROYAL pain in the ass! Much harder than the actual arcade version.
If only the NES version was like this. Would still be frustrating, but at least it wouldn't be disappointing.
Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't expect the c64 to replicate laserdisc-quality Don bluth animation, but the frustration is there. so why did the NES version have to be such a POS?
Never got past the 2nd platform. Thanks for the closure :)
+PastaNoose I very rarely got past the first platform :) And never past the skulls on the next screen. Throw me a bone, game!
I love the music on this version, so nostalgic. Takes me back to the late '80s when I was a kid.
Ugh this game was so painful...
This is a C64 port of the Spectrum conversion of the Coleco Adam game based on an arcade classic.
Nothin but net.
now that's some weird gameplay...
i remember the game being practically unplayable.
this must've been some really hard work, congratulations :-)
and thanks for showing me everything beyond the 2nd screen... ;-)

ohh my ...i remember this..it was pure hell lol
Gotta love Daphne in the blue swimsuit. Lol 😆
We broke many a controller just trying to fight the wind 😅😅
Me too. Remember loading it up and none of my mates could beat the first level. We tried though, impossible, allmost.
This epic game has more variations then a 2016 game.
I remember being so thrilled as a kid when I finally beat this, second elevator drove me nuts and the knight fight.

Three lives, extreme difficulty and on top of that figuring out what you got to do! Graphics were great tho!
Thanks for posting. I had this game when I was about 13 for the C64. I never got past the part where you have to row a boat through the underground dungeon and I was always curious about how the rest of the game looked. Now I know.
I remember the boat but I don't see it in this version 🤔
Damn. Impossible game and I can remember the first two levels but have never seen the rest
damn i could never get past that damn hallway with the skulls and boney hands
Same. Dirk would just stand there. Either it was a bug or I was just too dumb when I was nine.
One of the most difficult games i have ever played. I was 10 years or something back then and my older brother played Dragons Lair often. It was great to see and learn, but i believe no one of us guys has ever saved the huge princess. Great to see at least.
The arcade machine revolutionized the arcades. This is the C64-conversion.
I couldn't pass the first level (the falling platform) in the ZX Spectrum version.
AUESOME VIDEO!!!!!!! man, this brings back memories. I remembering ording this for the c-64 and it coming 1 YEAR later!!!
This is great! I have so many memories of playing this :)
That ad was probably just illustrating the laserdisc used for the original arcade game. The kids of today will never know the thrill of playing C64 in the 80's. Nothing has come close since.
I spent I countless hours trying to get past that garbled stuff (bushes?) on the Singe level. I could never get past it, thanks for showing it was possible.
Look at you, Commodore just killin it! I can't even tell the difference between this and the arcade.
I remember having this game for my C64. Loved it!
Hey now, the Game Boy Color managed a halfway decent conversion. Granted, that was a much more recent console, but it was eight-bit!
Fuck this game so hard. So much of my childhood spent memorising inconsistent actions. Thanks for letting me see the ending after all these years.
This as so hard. I remember spending ages trying to work out the skulls level. The timing had to be so spot on.

What you did here is not easy! Good Job!
Oh wow. I had this game for the C64 when I was ten years old. Difficult to say the least! I did not advance nearly as far as this. I never knew what most of this game was like.
Never got past the first platform in like my entire childhood
One of the most classic arguments for gameplay over graphics
cool! thanks man. I would to hear the running tunnel music if you ever get a chance to capture that scene. I still remember the song - i was mesmerized by it because it sounded like my c64 was singing "la la la" (voice reproduction).
I still have this and the sequal on my commodore 64, such a cool game.
kudos for patience. I had this and never saw past the first screen. Only good thing was the music
Dirk sticks the sword into the dragon...
: Hmm... Let's see...that appears to be an uncomfortable situation in my side there. Rather pointy and somewhat painful. I feel as though I may have to do something about that at a later time. Maybe I could...
I had this for my C64 - the horror.
So many hours and never got past the hallway
Dragon's Lair was never easy to play. But fun and rewarding.

it was one of my favourite games. Thanks for the video.
I never made it to the end - good job!
Wasn't there a river to row down, dodging the rocks..?
made my day
I like the music.
WOW!Under 10 minutes!
Nice job!
I remember spending many a summer day when I was a kid trying to beat this game. I don't think I was ever able to finally beat that knight at the end.
I remember it was like, 1986, and my friend was like, 'yo, you wanna come over and play Dragons Lair'? I was like, hell yea! I was so disappointed.
This must be the PAL version. The controls are screwed up in the falling platform levels, and everything's blue in the first couple of rooms. NTSC EA release was improved
The port no one needed nor deserved.
ditto! 20 years ago man.... when I was so young and carefree

I know it's silly and not real but the platform falling and the wind trying to blow you off the platform made my hands start sweating.
Great game, I can't see differences between this and the arcade version...
That music at 8:50 brings back memories!
I feel like Singe the Dragon is somewhat misunderstood. He just wanted to check her out for a while. Now he's got a major headache and a perforated back. Don't fuck with humans!
