I prefer a sink with water mixed in the spout. Separate hot and cold spouts are not easy to use. I'm also into cottage living and have a house from 1894 that we restored and renovated. It's cozy and has good plumbing, electricals, no dishwasher, wood kitchen counters, pine floors. Good luck, Julie!

I agree. This is one case where I don't think we should stick to traditional ways. Using water that is mixed in the spout doesn't leave you running the water so long as you attempt to get the temperature you desire.

Yes it is sah-dring or sah-during In the US. I always say we’re very phonetical speakers but in this instance, it appears we would be wrong by not having the “l” in there.

    • @karenryder6317
      @karenryder6317 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Just about every letter in the English language alphabet can be silent in some usages. In this case, American's make the "l" silent thus they say 'sodering' (as in 'palm' or 'calm' or 'salmon' etc,) but it appears that in British usage the "l" is NOT silent. In recently usage, people are now pronouncing the "t" in 'often', however when I was growing up in the 50's the "t" was silent as in "ofen".

The hot and cold pipes appeared to be touching as they were on the rafters. If that happens the heating of the hot pipe followed by contraction when cold will over the years wear away the copper and cause a leak. I found this out when I investigated a leak in a previous house and the cause was the hot and cold pipes touching which over the years wore away and caused a leak.

Curious why Gus notched out the floor joists to lay pipe? Here in Canada 🇨🇦 it’s a big no-no. We drill holes through the joists so as not to take away the strength of the joist. When you notch the joist you now make it weaker because it’s smaller.

As my dad used to say sweating the pipe, referring to the joints that had to be cleaned before soddering it together. My dad used a piece of white bread during the soldering to make sure the soder got into each crevis in the joints to seal them together. Our boiler was also the same unit that heated the entire 5bedroom 3 bath house on natural gas, with a seperate heat exchange for additional hot water and the tank was just used for storage. It was dubbed Nomad from Star trek because of the shape of it. When it came to replacing wiring? The term we use in the states is snaking it. because your tying and old piece of wire that is being removed to the new piece so as to not damage the walls or floors and you just pull it until you see the new wire and pull about 6 inches out and leave it untle your ready to put the outlets on.

@@MappertonLive love it! Yes, the baby birds will be grown and gone, but remember they’ll come back to make another nest of their own.
Tricky to redirect them to build a nest somewhere else. Maybe build them bird houses? Just a thought.

@@roccoravello4738 If the vegetation is too reduced then they'll usually find another spot for their nests. And as you can see from the videos there are plenty of nooks, crannies and hideyholes in the surrounding landscape for them to find somewhere new! They're very adaptable, generally speaking.

Its actually illegal to chop down nesting areas while the nests are in use. And unfortunately the drought would prevent fresh plants having a fair chance.

In South America, my friends have all those pipes outside the buildings. That is scary. Electric and plumbing.

Way too cold here to have water pipes outside - remember how low the tempertures get here in Winter, water freezes! There's very good buiding safety regulations in the UK - no danger from water and electrics inside.

Just wondering why you chose to install copper plumbing instead of Pex?

    • @sallyannc3176

In the UK you must use copper pipes for plumbing - good buidling regs.

Julie, you must expose that chimney brick before proceeding.
It would be more tedious and difficult down the line. It's just way to beautiful to leave covered by wall board.
Why would it be "so" expensive to uncover, cleanup, and detail??
    I'm I missing something?
While work goes on inside, someone desperately needs to start working on the outside flowered ivy on the cottage walls.
It's stunning, but a good shape and trim, while the weather is good, is wontedly requested.

There are some very different approaches to silent / not silent ls in American English. A few American accents, for example, pronounce the l in yolk, walk, folk etc. It sounds *so* strange to a British person!

I hate pedestal sinks in the bathroom! Hate!!! Only a proper vanity will do. Need to put down my glasses & watch while in the shower (or even washing face), need space for all the doodads to use (no way the Listerine bottle is ever going to fit in any cabinet above the sink), soap dish, and I like a candle, too. If I used makeup, heaven help me. Don't forget electrical outlets for recharging toothbrush, hair dryer & such. In the cabinet go spare rolls of tissue, cleaning supplies, and all the rest of that "stuff" - immediately to hand, but out of sight. For hotels, I love the long vanity counters to put out exactly what I'll need, and collect every last bit when I pack up to leave.
