I’m 20 years old and have been watching your videos for many years, I absolutely love just about all of the classic masterpieces you listed. It’s like a time machine being able to wear them and imagine what it must have been like. Keep up the great work!
That's exactly what the sense of smell does. And the older you get and the more special people you associate with a fragrance, the more wonderful memories you store in the olfactory memory. Even when you're from the Cretaceous period, like me, those recollections will be sharp.
@@johnscarr70 As someone who started wearing Aramis in college (around 1977 or so after my mom bought me the cologne, shampoo and conditioner) after graduating from English Leather, I can't understand when guys in their 30's say the older fragrances that aren't like today's sweets, smell like they're for an old man. I always tell them if that's the case, hold the bottle for 20 years and then it will be perfect for them!
@@shave-a-thon3415 you are slightly ahead of my time line but the principle is exactly the same. My first fine fragrance was Gucci Nobile, some 30 years ago. Discontinued now but if you could get it, you'd have it! Before that I was wearing Hall Mark which was cheap, and quite sweet but the drops I can still get have aged well.
@@johnscarr70 If I could get a few cases of Old Spice that were made by Shulton before its sale to Proctor & Gamble, I would love it! Even Mennen aftershave had a load of novelty versions out in the 1970's and 1980's. The companies that bought all the old fragances and aftershaves either cheapened them or their marketing departments have lost any thought of creating holiday gift and novelty sets. When Polo Sport was released around 1990, it was offered with a nice sized Polo Sport beach blanket. Paul Sebastian was sold with gift watches for Father's Day. I must have had a dozen duffel bags that came with fragrances purchased in department stores, from Davidoff to Gucci.
My old man had a 50ml of Salvador Dali on his dish for over a decade. He only wore it on nights out. The new formulation smells exactly as I remember from my childhood but a little weaker. I think it smells great but I obviously have a big association with this one. It's not for everyone. It's dark and gothic while also having a heavy 80s vibe. You'll basically smell like a vampire that went underground in 1988 and just recently emerged.
A bottle of Aramis arrived for me literally this morning. It makes everything else feel like kids stuff. But I did try a sample first. The 110 ml was actually cheaper than the 60 ml.
@@mercedesbenzs600bash Personally I would not wear it. Maybe once or twice a year in cold weather, but it's the perfume that started it all for me. It was my dad's signature scent, hence the first one I started to ware. For me it represents the smell of the 70s (even though it came out in 1978).
Really love how you keep promoting Aramis Havana! I love the note of tobacco, sadly 95% of tobacco fragrances tend to be sweet as hell. Loads of vanilla, honey, cherries, maybe boozy notes at best. This one is indeed beautifully dry and green with patchouli wafting through, almost hay-like tobacco. I would really like to learn more about non-sweet tobacco scents, they are so hard to find. Wowwwwww Lagerfeld Classic use to be my signature scent back in the day,I just might have to revisit it.... Lapidus Pour Homme is a TRUE ol skool BEAST,definetly not for everyone....
I got a bottle of Lagerfeld Classic and I liked the amber tobacco vibe. Just picked up Lapidus (borrowed few sprays back in high school from dad) it still is a beast, may not quite melt paint from the wall like back in the day but still strong. However, used lightly the dry down is pretty good and unique. I also barrowed Quorum back in HS as well picked up a new bottle it too seems weaker but still pretty strong definitely has a woody , tobacco, musky tone.
Great review of a very very unique and unpreciated fragrance genre,it pain me but i has the Oscar De LaRenta afew years ago(6/7), and i just didnt appreciate it as much as i should have, suffice to say i no longer own it......
givenchy xeryus ....annick menardo exotic :) ....great parfums , my signature scent armani attitude but discontinued. what the best alternative a armani attitude in your opinion Mrsmelly ?
My wife has a great nose for fragrance gifts and Xeryus is on my "to replace" list. However, she also bought KL Classic. I wore the bottle but found the frag without merit, none of the Cointreau described and with a joke shop synthetic fart spray accord. I suppose I have to try again in case it was an iffy bottle. LOVE LPH, bottle surely inspired by the interior of the Death Star ...
Greetings sir. Best wishes from Mexico, as always, having a great time with your videos. I quite enjoy Obsession but rather as a general culture scent, i have to say i find it pretty much unwearable in the heatwave we've been having lately in Mexico and in my taste, thy is overwhelming. I have to say though, i would prefer to wear the female Obsession, which i find quite a bit nicer, more animalic and yet more refined, while being relatively unisex. Have to agree with you there with Pour Lui and Lapidus, great scents as well for a great bang for buck as well. Salvador Dalí is a tad more expensive here. Pour Lui i personally find deeply "perfumed" in the sense that it's a deeply refined yet masculine composition, in my opinion with its very nice aldehydic and carnation - forward edge which might even give off a slight liquor vibe, very wearable as well, i've got the current formula. Lapidus i had but it' almost the opposite. Almost unwearable as well. If Obsession was unwearable for the cinnamon faceful, Lapidus is like a urinal cake with grape soda or stuff. Quite aggressive IMO. I'd also add Jacomo de Jacomo, i don't know if you already know it sir. It's a great scent to the likes of Santos de Cartier with more fougere and smoke - forward nuances, even smelling like an ashtray with fresh ciggie butts, raw herbs and a bunch of cloves. And if it's not your cup of tea, i'd also recommend Jacques Bogart One Man Show since it seems to be one of the most usable powerhouses from the time and i really loved it since it seems to be a sort of "clean" (IE Not a urine bomb) and green powerhouse of the likes of Polo, Chanel Antaeus and such. I personally prefer it above the current formula of Polo and such since i find OMS closer to the older, pre 2010 formulas of Polo, which were much more raw and smoky.
I love the drink Cointreau but Lagerfeld Classic just wasn't for me, far too musky and old school, had to sell my bottle. It was the most recent (Interparfums) version, extremely potent stuff, I respect it as a unique olfactory creation but it's definitely not a safe blind buy for most folk I reckon, an acquired taste.
@@DPF1 I'm not certain it's just from the musk, could be a combination of notes like patchouli and the florals with the musk but it's a bit dirty/animalic to me (which I can't stand), I know some people absolutely love this scent, definitely a classic. Good luck!
Aramis was my first. I was 19, now 62 and still get an olfactory erection remembering how the heavy on the trigger made me feel. Thanks for pulling that memory out Dan. Well done 👍
Using the descriptive adjective "cheap" rather than inexpensive probably would double your clicks! Do you have a vintage Salvadore Dali edt or is that the reformulation? Is your Lagerfeld the current Interparfums, Coty or earlier version? I've always felt that the Shalimar edp dries down to something that smells like Lagerfeld. As far as Aramis goes, I've been wearing it since the latter part of the 1970's. It's still strong but not like those original oakmoss bombs! Even the current aftershave splash is stronger than many edt's out there. There's only one Aramis flanker that you can't find discounted and that's Aramis JHL (named after Estee Lauder's husband, Joseph H. Lauder). Have you ever tried it? It's still available in the US at a few major dept. stores. Here it is in the UK: www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_117993900499_-1 You should also try Aramis Tuscany and Aramis Devin. I thought you owned the excellent Aramis Tobacco Reserve. Obession was my 1980's and 1990's date night scent. It was a cologne when it first came out and stronger than most of the edp's of today. Try today's Obsession edp for women. Very strong and very close to the male version. You should always include Paul Sebastian. It's still stronger than most out there: www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Paul-Sebastian/PS-Fine-Cologne-5043.html Honorable mention goes to Giorgio for Men by Giorgio of Beverly Hills: www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Giorgio-Beverly-Hills/Giorgio-for-Men-1891.html
Dan, how similar, (or not), are Havana and the newer Tobacco Reserve? I already have and love Havana, and generally I love the smell of green tobacco or tobacco leaves, not the cherry vibe of pipe tobacco. Santa Maria Novella Tabacco Toscano is also a great perfume in this style.
Hi George. Tobacco modern reserve is totally different. Very little in common apart from a tobacco accord. Even then it’s perhaps a different tobacco note.
I also wanted to comment sir, i've worn Lapidus in public and when being controlled and in a proper enviroment (IE not extremely hot, not in a club, not in a first date with a feminist) and it was even liked by women. It was said that not as a first choice but i think everything can be liked, hehe. In that sense, Pour Lui, Drakkar Noir, Polo, OMS or Givenchy Gentleman could be much closer to being an OG compliment puller XD. Best wishes sir
Fantastic list! Love all these old school fragrances... Giorgio Beverly Hills - For Him EDT, Giorgio - Red, YSL - Kouros, Hugo Boss - Number One, Roger & Gallet - Open. Classics!
I borrowed it from Juan Sheet, I'm afraid! I do think it's important that someone cleans up some of the misconceptions about power house fragrance. Reformulations have not always been kind, but some remain potent as ever. Discovering which ones is part of the fun!
I'm a 55 year old fougere, barbershop fan. 1. Lapidus, I love this, top notes smell like Zoologist Hummingbird, which I wanted. Slight unpleasant musk only if I stick my nose in my arm. So powerful, I smelled it on me for hours. 2. Duc de Vervins, lovely 3. Pour Lui, sweet 4. Xeryus 5. Lagerfeld, 70s, 80s flashback 6. Versace L'homme 7. Aramis 8. Havana 9. Obsession, smells like Shalimar without the gasoline, but it's too feminine. 10. Salvador Dali, disgusting. I can kind of tolerate it on my dog.
If you're a powerhouse lover I can recommend Lapidus PH. Well worth it's place on this list. Super masculine. Another one which would have enjoyed more plaudits if it had been released by a higher end house. AND it's available under £17 for 100ml.
@@johnscarr70 I'll definitely have to check it out next time I make an online purchase. For that price no reason not to. Just wish I would've gotten it the first time instead of going with the flanker. Ah well 🤷♂️

There is one fragrance that I miss so much, Gucci Envy. Do you have any suggestions on other frags that are similar?
Great review of a very very unique and unpreciated fragrance genre,it pain me but i has the Oscar De LaRenta afew years ago(6/7), and i just didnt appreciate it as much as i should have, suffice to say i no longer own it......
Thanks a lot Karanja.
I can't find Givenchy Aria. Is it the same as Givenchy Air? Please send a link!
You forgot Cacharel Man! It definitely should on that list making it sweet 13.
givenchy xeryus ....annick menardo exotic :) ....great parfums , my signature scent armani attitude but discontinued. what the best alternative a armani attitude in your opinion Mrsmelly ?
My wife has a great nose for fragrance gifts and Xeryus is on my "to replace" list. However, she also bought KL Classic. I wore the bottle but found the frag without merit, none of the Cointreau described and with a joke shop synthetic fart spray accord. I suppose I have to try again in case it was an iffy bottle. LOVE LPH, bottle surely inspired by the interior of the Death Star ...
Thanks John. Maybe the modem Lagerfeld Classic has lost is magic.
@@MrSmelly1977 cheers. It's possible. I feel like I have to give it a whirl!
When can I order Gravitas PH (shipping to the US)?
Ohhh thanks for the warning, I'm wary of frags that are very musky!
Well done 👍
Thanks so much Mike.
jaguar pour homme was a nice one and paco rabane pour homme and ofcource azzaro pour homme :D
Versace L'Homme is a fantastic fragrance on drydown, but I find the opening to be a bit like a bergamot 1980s medicine cabinet explosion.
I watch your powerhouse fragrances reviews because I like the intro
Great choices
Great List Dan !!!
Thanks Jerry.
It's still available in the US at a few major dept. stores. Here it is in the UK: www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_117993900499_-1
You should also try Aramis Tuscany and Aramis Devin.
It's still stronger than most out there: www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Paul-Sebastian/PS-Fine-Cologne-5043.html
Honorable mention goes to Giorgio for Men by Giorgio of Beverly Hills:
www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Giorgio-Beverly-Hills/Giorgio-for-Men-1891.html
Dan, how similar, (or not), are Havana and the newer Tobacco Reserve?
I already have and love Havana, and generally I love the smell of green tobacco or tobacco leaves, not the cherry vibe of pipe tobacco.
Santa Maria Novella Tabacco Toscano is also a great perfume in this style.
Hi George. Tobacco modern reserve is totally different. Very little in common apart from a tobacco accord. Even then it’s perhaps a different tobacco note.
Thank you Dan. I have to get my nose on this juice then 😉
I also wanted to comment sir, i've worn Lapidus in public and when being controlled and in a proper enviroment (IE not extremely hot, not in a club, not in a first date with a feminist) and it was even liked by women. It was said that not as a first choice but i think everything can be liked, hehe. In that sense, Pour Lui, Drakkar Noir, Polo, OMS or Givenchy Gentleman could be much closer to being an OG compliment puller XD. Best wishes sir
Love the intro!
Homme de Gres made in 96 you would love it
Beautifully done 💪
Loved the Motorhead reference.
would you say caron yatagan is a powerhouse as it would probably be a blind buy and its not cheap
Some great picks here
Thanks David.
Fantastic list! Love all these old school fragrances... Giorgio Beverly Hills - For Him EDT, Giorgio - Red, YSL - Kouros, Hugo Boss - Number One, Roger & Gallet - Open. Classics!
Open. That frag is strong as bull.
@@johnscarr70 Great term!
I borrowed it from Juan Sheet, I'm afraid! I do think it's important that someone cleans up some of the misconceptions about power house fragrance. Reformulations have not always been kind, but some remain potent as ever. Discovering which ones is part of the fun!
Salvadore Dali is my first fragrance ever.
Great stuff dan .
Thanks James.
I'm a 55 year old fougere, barbershop fan.
1. Lapidus, I love this, top notes smell like Zoologist Hummingbird, which I wanted. Slight unpleasant musk only if I stick my nose in my arm. So powerful, I smelled it on me for hours.
2. Duc de Vervins, lovely
3. Pour Lui, sweet
4. Xeryus
5. Lagerfeld, 70s, 80s flashback
6. Versace L'homme
7. Aramis
8. Havana
9. Obsession, smells like Shalimar without the gasoline, but it's too feminine.
10. Salvador Dali, disgusting. I can kind of tolerate it on my dog.
Seeing this from 2 years ago, its horrible that Aramis has discontinued its flankers.
I would have included orginal One Man Show to this list. It is a power house and very cheap!
Hey Dan I just wanted to let you know that your new phone offers much better video and also better audio. You said that you wanted some feedback.
Thanks a lot Usti!!!! That’s good to know.
Great vid as usual. I own Versace L'Homme and Lapidus flanker Black Extreme. The latter smells like grape bubble gum and coyote urine
Ah well 🤷♂️
@@ts1821 That's the beauty of fragrance. You're never too late to the party. TL are a bit like that in my experience, some great, some less great. I love TL Pour Lui, have Black Soul, which is a bit of a One Million - alike but I enjoy. Bought White Soul for my wife which was pleasant. Altamir is ok too but I already have my "sweet quota" in the aforementioned!
Are there any scents that smell of fish?I love the smell of fish
Thanks
Mr Smelly needs to do a modern powerhouse fragrance! Imagine uses 50 sprays of D & G *THE ONE*, can't tell if he sprayed so empties the whole bottle on himself. -result- Mr Smelly trips over a creasing the the carpet! [Come to think of it didn't ...Jeremy Fragrance empty a whole can of Sauvage spray on himself to get compliments in Ibiza]
My dad wore Aramis☺️
That’s great! Keep the vids coming Mita! Subbed to your channel .
:DDDDDDDDDDDD always the funniest intros !!!!!
Wonderful intro!!...hilarious.
Make a vid to show off your collection!
Was that ... Terry Venables...? Can you imagine what would have been created if celebrity fragrance had been around in the day? El Tel a L'Extreme ...
I would definitely buy a Terry Venables fragrance.
@@MrSmelly1977 I'll wait til Chris Kamara's Eau de Ninja hits the shops. (The nose behind it is broken)
Tuscany ?
Has anyone converted these “X sprays of” memes into animated gifs? Every fragrance group ever needs some.
Always thought that Xeryus was smelling a bit like hashish in the drydown
I've always felt it had a nutty smell.
Interesting !
Totally love obsession but latest formulation is a poor shadow of it former self.
Obsession was my scent through much of high school in the early to mid 90s. Not to be a boomer but man frags have fallen hard since then.

Unfortunately CK obsession is a shadow of it former self. A real shame. Great fragrance now a very weak performer.
Quorum is a glaring omission
🤣🤣🤣🤣 these intro are the best bro
Thanks George.
I feel pampered. MrSmelly's new video and Lex reviewing Gravitas. AMEEEEEEEEEEN
Amen indeed!
I love aramis but guess who doesn't

Ha ha. Possibly true .
