Tbh, Im here because you're an actual person. Not only do I enjoy your taste in fragrances and trust your reviews but also you're not here to blow smoke my ass and high horse me to death. Thanks for staying down to earth, I look forward to more of your work. Stay safe!
I ordered some old cheapies and I came to the realisation I hate Fougeres. As a guy in 30s, it's mostly because it's kind of an uncle/dad fragrance. Something that people wore when I was a kid. I kinda hate most 80s/90s; the music (except house and techno), the fashion but I love a lot of things 60s/70s. Maybe it's just the cycle of trends. I didn't came here to shit on Fougeres tho. I came to see that maybe it can change my view.
@@aginacarlo If you hate synthetics then just pour incense oil all over yourself or any natural essential oil and you'll notice straight away why synthetics are a non negotiable in the perfume industry.
Patou pour homme is a benchmark for masterpiece fougeres. This composition surpasses any fougere I've ever tried - one of the best fragrances ever made, period!
Well thanks to you Dan, I went shopping. Like I need more fragrance? Yes of course I do. By the way I loved seeing Gina Lolobrigida in you thumbnail. I bet I’m the only person who recognized her. “ Woman of Straw” Come September “ “ Trapeze “ “Solomon and Sheba.” “Beat the Devil” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, just to name a few of her films.
Glad you included Gucci Noble I got it for Christmas in 1990 13 years old and wore the hell out of it. Also would include Tuscany by Aramis and Bracken Man by Amouge
Un Homme by Charles Jourdan, my Father's signature perfume. I used it myself and still use it (from time to time). A pearl from the 80's, very hard to find. This perfume is fantastic and it is truly unfortunate that it has been discontinued. Except for the famous Azzaro pour Homme, nothing else resembles, comes close to this perfume. Unforgettable.
Loving the Monty Python clips!! The content and recommendations are detailed and informative as always with the tongue-in-cheek references but the Life of Brian??! Classic!
Bon Viveur is gorgeous I just bought it for my husband. Omg I love that you put Gina Lollobrigida in the thumbnail Dan. One of my favorite 50's actresses and severely underrated. That Charles Jourdan sounds very intriguing.
Ohh.. This was so nostalgic to me. Drakkar Noir and Azzaro pour Homme... My student days... Second half of the '80s. I had no idea about fougere/barbershop type of fragrances at that time. I just loved those two fragrances to death !
Brut was actually my signature fragrance when I was in high school (I'm 25 now) 🤣. People either hated it or loved it. Still have a bottle of it although I don't wear it often anymore 😁
beautiful video. you have pulled historical perfumes out of the drawer of time. Brut, Paco, Azzaro, Jourdan are now unknown pearls in the 21st century. Drakkar also the first pour homme was a really good fougere, compared to the noir it was more on the lingering woody citrus side. Of course there would be others but you have certainly dealt with true masterpieces. Believe me Patou pour homme is on a stellar level, even if it is in the fougere family, it does not resemble anyone from this group, not even remotely, distant cousins could be Equipage, Nino Cerruti p.h. Greetings from Italy
• Old fragrances that are currently still-in-production are, simply put, MANUFACTURED CHEAPLY! • Today fragrances are made with huge amounts of chemicals & synthetics. • This is why they usually DO NOT LAST! • “Old-school classics” in contrast, often took years to create. Complex base notes were used, costly natural ingredients AND “Costly Fixatives”. “Drop-The-Mike” • The classics allowed a fragrance to 'open' and last longer, both on your skin and in your memory.! • VINTAGE perfumes deteriorate with age!!! • Costly natural ingredients such as: Castoreum & Civet cannot be simulated (REPLICATED) IN A SYNTHETIC SCENT!!!
Hey Dan, you missed the greatest Fougere of all time . . . Houbigant - Fougere Royale !! One of my signature scents (I have 3 bottles) Thanks for sharing . . .
A lot of really great ones, it's amazing how cheap you can get a few of them - Paco Rabanne and Xeryus you can get for around $25-30 and Brut Special Reserve you can get for $10-15. Great list, I love fougeres even if they're old timey they can definitely be... SEXY. I'd put Gucci Envy on my short list.
What commercial Fougere fragrances do you know that are modern / adapted to current trends and usable for youth and casual wear? (like Sauvage Elixir, Le Male, 1725)
Fougere’s are the best ! I read Patou pour Homme smells similar to Red for Men by Giorgio Beverly Hills which I didn’t like at all. I’m sure it’s much higher quality though lol
Mr. Smelly, do you remember Ho Hang? This is such an outstanding, un annoying masculine, classic, woody, Brazilian rosewood, spicy, subtle floral, non dry scent, non sweet, lavender scent. Nowadays very expensive. Do you know it?
Fougere is quite hard to pin down for me...when Korous, Fleur du Male, and Bogart for Men are all fougere's, it seems impossibly broad. Lavender the only real common thread?
Your best intro yet. 💀 Literally was just thinking of picking up the new Xeryus from Givenchy earlier today. Those new bottles are disappearing from discounters fast.
Regarding Patou Pour Homme, I can attest it is fabulous. I was amazed when I had a chance to try it. Worth getting a sample if not willing to drop that much cash on a full bottle.
Love this video so much ! Finally sexy fragrances which smell like a man should ! Always loved Fougeres ! I only wear that kind of fragrances ! Keep up the great work Dan ! Huge fan of your channel for so many years, cheers from Italy 😊
Hi Dan, could you do a comparison of the vintage Patou Pour Homme with the modern re-release? If it’s close enough I don’t mind pulling the trigger on the modern one as the vintage is simply impossible for me to get anyways. Cheers Dan 🥂
Yep I'm a Fougere man through and through. I would think the sexiest goes to Creed Bois du Portugal, with Frank Sinatra wearing it to his 5 star restaurant dinner date with Sophia Loren and all. But supposedly the inspiration for Tom Ford Beau de Jour was Cary Grant's neck, so who knows. UPDATE: OK, the above was just after the initial video thing that was released. So after watching the 10 fougeres, I would say Beau de Jour is the cream of the crop. I differentiate "barbershop" fougeres from classic and other Fougeres I don't consider very barbershop-y. My Top "Barbershop Fougeres: 1. Tom Ford Beau de Jour 2. Penhaligon Sartorial 3. Tom Ford Fougere D'Argent 4. MDCI Invasion Barbare 5. YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme 6. MMM Replica series At the Barbers 7. Drakkar Noir 8. Azzaro Pour Homme My Top Classic non-barbershop Fougeres: 1. Houbigant Fougere Royale (2010) 2. Amouage Bracken Man
Mr. Smelly, have you had your nose on Bracken Man? I keep flopping back and fourth between this and Tom Ford's BDJ. They smell very similar in ways but there's slight differences that make each very charming. Is the Lavender in BDJ doing what the clove does in Bracken Man? Love your insight on this.
I have both of those high up in my favorites collection. Beau de Jour is my #1 "barbershop" fougere. Bracken Man is the most photorealistic Fougere maybe ever, but I don't consider it very "barbershopy", so I consider it a classic Fougere like the 2010 rereleased Houbigant Fougere Royale.
…yes, but were you 10 or 11 or 12, wearing Brut or Hai-Karate and listening to The Association and The Kinks and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, you would have…no kid had access to Habit Rouge or was wearing Yves Saint Laurent !
Very Very Nice Dan! I loved He man and Skelatore! By the Power of Gray Skull! And She- Ra i wanted to date! She was Hot Dan! I can not believe He-Man didn't Date her! Whatever! I've come to the realization I love Fougere's. It's hands-down the most elegant male genre. And it has been the majority of my purchases lately.
I'm sorry as a man who wore this stuff THESE ARE ALL SYNTHETIC SCENTS!

For any of you wondering if the new Netflix He-Man is worth watching.... It’s not.
My son kinda likes it...he's 4
There's He man on Netflix, based on the cartoon?
Well thanks to you Dan, I went shopping. Like I need more fragrance? Yes of course I do.

Thank you so much Lanier. What a great icon of the golden era of Hollywood she was.
Only you would recognize her Lanier! Waiting for another SOTD video. Wear something Italian and play Peppino Gagliardi. Lol, cheers!

Boucheron Pour Homme worth getting? I can't get enough of oak mossy fougeres.
Yeah, its the shit. Def a backbone to any fougere section of a collection, and there are few scents that smell like it.
Its like a lemony Aramis

Well played, sir :)
Great video, Dan. Fougere is my favorite. Azzaro Pour Homme and Givenchy Xeryus are at the top of my list.
Thanks John. Two amazing classics.
Forget the today’s version of Drakkar Noir The 80s version even early 90s was the best of all totally big and powerful fragrance
You got it!!!!!! Today fragrances are made with huge amounts of chemicals & synthetics. This is why they usually DO NOT LAST!!!!
Gucci Nobile, BEST Fougere ever created!!! Bring it back already Gucci...
Chanel Platinum Egoiste is very underrated, love it!!
Vintage Xeryus is a stellar fragrance
Hands down the best fougere out there right now - Rogue Perfumery's Fougere L'Aube. Also hard to track down, but worth it and IFRA-non-compliant.
Looking forward to this shortly
Great job as ever ✔️
I think you missed a lovely one by ysl: Jazz! From 1988. True masterpiece for me! You have to try it on
I still wear it since 1988
Being my signature scent for more than 25 years

Hilarious and time/era conscious. The He Man references in a fougere video. 👍 Tragicomic self disclosures. Obviously a lot of self acceptance work. 🙏
