    This is the most detailed video related to this topic I've seen in a while. I've encountered all these things with trying to buy collections and sell them and I think it's a good heads up to anybody who's just entering the market recently. I think what you're saying is right on point and brutally honest in some cases. These are all things people need to consider when they're trying to put this all together. Thanks for the Post very cool info.

    The grind is real. I've been doing ebay for over 7 years selling everything from thrift store clothes to toys to sports cards. I'm lucky I work from home for my real job but ebay is a ton of work as you said, most don't realize it. I've had friends try to start selling things on ebay because I've been successful at it and then they can't hang with it for more than 3-6 months. Last year my buddy came to me with his Dad's old Card shop inventory that's moved from basement to basement over 30 years. A lot of junk wax era stuff but have found some real gems in there, some great 1961 Fleer basketball, Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Bill Russell, we made a pretty penny on those. Keep up the good content, love it.

    Another great episode! I often wonder what my entire collection would fetch. My expectation vs the reality of someone that buys larger collections. I know how much I have spent collecting and how much time I spent organizing into sport and category (rookies, HOFers, inserts, parallels, hits). I often think, "Maybe I should sell or condense my collection into 5-10 huge cards." But, then I go through them and just enjoy what I have amassed.
    In the long run, selling something you collect as a hobby and enjoyment begins to feel like an impossibility. Thinking about selling off a collection I value much higher than a buyer would just give me anxiety lol. I feel like trading into grail cards seems like such a better option for someone like me. Who knows though.
    Thank you for taking the time to give some perspective into your ways and sharing your experience.

    Ty I appreciate the effort and passion it takes for any person to take the plunge of being a full time seller/hobbyist. As a full time collection buyer you know we have to sometimes walk from a deal for it to make sense a lot of people mistake that a card is comped at $25 so you should pay $20 lol 😂 in actuality I have to pay $10 or below to make money. This is why I’ve always used the line “it’s only worth what someone’s willing to pay for it at that time” thank you for highlighting that. Sellers have to get into the mindset of a buyer of bulk volume to understand where are pie is divided. We unfortunately just don’t sell and reap 💯% profit that our gets cut up quickly and what’s left is your piece 😂. The other big tip for me is when I value a collection is the meat the bones what I like to say so if the meat on the bones has recent or potential to turn a profit quickly I will pay up for that collection. If the collection is layered in $1-$5 cards I have to buy at bulk rate .25-.50 a card because these are the type of collections we often see more of than the meat on the bones collection. Great breakdown only thing you left out was travel expenses that also cut into that pie..lol thanks again and always for the love of cardboard.

    I couldn’t agree with you more about what is the value of cards. My biggest pet peeve lately In this hobby is the comp checking on eBay at card shows. Just because a card two months ago sold for $500 on eBay and yesterday it sold for $200, does not mean that the card is magically now a $200 card. My new favorite also is buyers always find the low end of what cards comp at, when trying to offer you a deal. It’s like these guys have never heard of cost averaging. It’s always latest comps and that’s what it’s worth.

So, you have convinced me to sell my collection on consignment. I now realize why consigners charge up to 35% of sales. Breaking everything down by time convinced me. Thank you for the breakdown.

    I actually thought you had a retail shop too. I love your content. All you have to do is sell a few things to realize the grind. I hate when someone says it’s worth x amount. Ok well that’s fine. Why don’t you sell it to the person who thinks it’s also worth that much. It’s amazing how many people frown upon resellers. This is what you do for your livelihood. There has to be some “meat on the bone” for the resellers. When you go a network series. This is you bonus content that stays on the TH-cam channel. I would love to see your organization for listed items in the future and also some of your PC. Also could you talk about buying some lots or collections you have bought and flipping to acquire cards for your pc out of those collections or lots. Im rambling but I’m full of ideas. P.s. was it raining? Lol

    Now from what I’ve heard about gai as long as the flip is silver and begins with certain numbers. Meaning its an early on flip then it’s legit. The newer flips after someone else took over that’s when they went downhill. I owe a couple of gai older packs and sold some as well with no issues. Those will crossover into psa flips if someone is that concerned.

    I spent about $2-$3k in 2020 cause I got back into the hobby like so many others during covid. I did ok cause I knew to go for players who are hall of Famer or potential hofrs but most of the modern singles I bought have decreased now & I'd say my collection is worth about $1k-1.5k now so I'm definitely losing money if I sold today. Luckily I had about $500 worth of stuff to start from what I had left over from my old collection so I have a small cushion. Love the channel! Happy Hunting!

    Two Questions!
    1. You are very conscious of your time! How do you prevent not missing that rare find by passing on something you perceive is too much time!

      Thank you so much John!
      1. I definitely risk that in some occasions... but for the most part you can get a feel for what 'might' be in certain boxes.
      2. Ultimately, if I can provide for my family through cards...it's hard not to remain passionate. I get to see a lot of amazing cards flowing through the store and into collectors hands. (My collection also gets rewarded quite well)...

    There's gotta be a cable channel that'd pick up your Chasing Cardboard series.. it's great.. One question about this video - when scanning cards that look much duller when scanned on a flatbed than they do in more natural, reflective light (like Atomics/Sapphires/etc.) do you do anything special or just accept the scan as it is (would be nice to get more photorealistic images on eBay to help sell the cards)?

    Security tape. Get a quality security tape to tab toploaders or card savers. I've had buyers try to switch return high end cards, and don't get caught in ebay crosshairs as a seller. The img. just isn't enough. It's a giant hassle that can be avoided if tape seal is broken as a protection, you have extra leverage dealing with ebay.

    I look at my collection and i can sell it for 50-60% eBay price depending on the demand of the card. I’m just talking graded singles as that’s my collection. Once you start throwing in boxes and boxes of commons, finding a price is like finding a needle in a haystack.
    I just recently sold a bunch of my doubles to a local dealer for about 55% of their comp. That round number is cool with me because it’s fair to both parties. Could I get 60%? 65% probably, but that takes a lot of time where this was an easy transaction that we both agreed on in about 5 minutes.

    I sell cards from card breaks to recoup some of the cost of breaks and keep some cards for my pc. When selling some cards as in 1000’s of eBay listings (not all of the cards though) that came from card breaks, how do you handle the eBay 1099 in regards to taxes. It’s easy if you just buy singles and compare what you purchased for and then sell for. Card breaks is a different story when it’s almost impossible to remember what cards came from what breaks. By the way just found your channel a few weeks ago subscribed and enjoy your content.

  • @thecardsaysmoops3
    @thecardsaysmoops3 ปีที่แล้ว

    A good rule of thumb for me is offer based on only the cards that will sell within 30 days. For example, if someone presents a collection of which I can sell about $1,000 quickly (after fees and labor) and $3,000 over time, I'll offer a percentage of $1,000. The extra cards are the reward for the ready cash I provide, the time I put into them, and the space it takes to store it. If you have an ebay store you also have to consider the value of the listing- even if its a free listing its a listing you can't use on another card. I also need to consider the opportunity cost. If I have $1,000 tied up in dead stock that's money I can't spend on hot stock.

  • @burleycardboard
    @burleycardboard ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That’s a good point about the taxes. That’s one thing that’s taken a lot of the fun out of the hobby for me, as I don’t sell much anymore with that super low $600 threshold now. I know it’s not a very exciting topic, but would love to see your process of keeping records and assigning cost basis to each card you buy in a collection.

I was excited to add things but you just touched on everything. Especially the time it takes for something to actually sell. I got back to cards in 2018 when Ohtani showed up. Literally, I have about 13 of his debut ticket stubs and 40 unused season ticket booklets of 2018 Angels the whole season. I have a lot of 2018 Acuna Jr. as well, NO SOTO tho. I started buying a lot of cards from locals on craigslist between 2018 to 2021. I started selling cards on eBay. It is not easy. I think i needed to get all my cards and ticket stubs to be graded which demand decent money. I have tons of Michael Jordans from the 1990s wax pack junk era.
      I have about 300 pairs of Jordan sneakers which I cumulated in post-2018 from Nike SNKR app. Most of those sneakers have doubled in value. I want to start selling Jordan graded cards and his Jordan sneakers together as alternative assets.

      I need to get my cards graded. CSG came out with a bulk submission of $12 each (25 cards minimum submission). I mean all those 2018 ohtani rookie cards, Michael jordan, kobes, etc. with 8,9, 10 graded cards, they could easily sold for 2X or 3x my cost. i probably bought $35K worth of Ohtani cards in 2018. I need to unload them. this year is his contract year, he will be the first to get a $500M contract.
      if i still have my cpa job, i can't do 2 things at once. I did not sold many cards in 2022 but i did sold vintage collectibles which i bought from estate sales. I'm a semi hoarder so i have boatload of WW2 stuffs, 100 years old postcards, disney pins, sport illustrated, old baseball cards etc.
      I need to have atleast 4,000 listings with 1% daily selling rate to make about $500 a day. A LOT OF WORK SELLING ON EBAY PERIOD!! I work at cpa firm, i get my check every 2 weeks, bad or good.

    Great episode. All on point...One thing I have done is pivot.. So for "Lower end" I have gravitated to other things like Marvel, GPK, pop culture stuff. Sports I stay mid/high end. I did this with the thought process that Millions of people love sports, but Millions do not. Not to mention a baseball guy may not like football. But with cards like Marvel, you have a ton of fansincluding the sports fans. I would say more people like things like Marvel/pop culture because it has been a part of their life. It's a lot easier to move a character like nightcrawler base than a Garciaparra base (I played against Nomar as kids btw). More people can relate to characters than players. With less expensive sports cards we move them 2 ways. The bottom of the barrel stuff goes to our local auction here and believe it or not a 3200 ct commons box sold for over $400. For the stars and semi stars we have gravitated to whatnot. What we do is sell mid range cards and if it reaches a certain price they get to have random pulls from a box full of they cards. Like $10=2 pulls $20=5 pulls etc... I have been into cards since 85 as a kid starting with GPK then sports cards since 87. I have been a hustler/reseller most of my life. Being organized, creative, and having a good work flow usually equates to success even on the "bad buys" Many people in sports cards or anything for that matter don't know what they don't know. So unless they hear people like you or I talk about pros/cons goods/bads, they still won't know. Can't wait for the next one brother. Keep up the great work.

      I was thinking the same, Ive seen the same exact cards bring more money if they are organized/sorted/somewhat protected (retail) but flippers/resellers/dealers seem to only look at thier profit margin and seem to only value their time. Im thinking how people say junk wax is worthless, but if you can buy a 5000 count box for $25 and sort them, put together sets and sell those cards for .18 each (avg retail common price) you can net $900 -16 hrs hand sorting/catalogging @ 20 per hour= $320.....so a mere $500 profit on "worthless" junk wax (and yes people still buy junk wax)....even then I can buy a scanner that would reduce sorting/even listing to just a couple hours....thinking out loud the time "excuse" is just a way to get cards for cheaper and really holds no meaning. lol, I cant help but wonder if dealers/flippers/resellers "complain" if they sell something too quickly and have minimal time invested???

Yes you may sit there and get all of that scanned, sorted, listed... and a small % will sell in the short-term. + shipping time, customer service, & TAXES.... you have shipping fees, supplies, on and on.... it's not as simple as you make it sound.

Even asking $4,000 I can't get anyone interested after 2 years. The sports card collecting hobby is all a big scam and a ripoff. When you pay $10 a pack and only get $2.00 in value and no one wants to buy the cards, that's an indicator that it's not worth collecting ANYTHING anymore. And only by collectors contacting their house and senate members and demanding that the $600 per year be raised to $50,000 per year sales per household will things improve a little bit.
