I’m in Glasgow a lot, but as I live in Edinburgh I rarely need to stay overnight. I’ve been in the Champagne Central a few times, but always thought the hotel was uber expensive. This has been a real eye opener. So much space and luxury for that type of money. Well done you and well done Glasgow Grand Central.
I was the same. I'm used to the Railway Hotels like The Balmoral in Edinburgh and The Landmark in London being eye-wateringly expensive which is why I was so shocked (and delighted) by the prices at Grand Central.
Brought back many memories when I worked as a receptionist and I was delighted the layout was basically the same as it was then. The amount of times I was up and down those stairs to the first floor certainly kept me fit. Thank you for letting me refresh those memories of the 70s.
Stayed in Voco Grand Central, in January for 3 nights, when up visiting friends/family in the Glasgow area. Concur with all you said Roger about the hotel, including the breakfasts! Have booked further stays for later on this year. And yes, miss squared sausage, but have no problems with links! Thanks for vlog on this impressive hotel, and was also impressed with the room price! Nice one Roger! 😊 👍
I've passed through the Central over a thousand times and always wondered what it was like in the Grand Central Hotel. And you know, now, I might just treat myself. Thanks for a great vlog.
I can distinctly remember that back in the sixties the Champagne Bar was where there was a team of people putting destination boards into the windows (each had all the stopping points). I'm pretty sure that if you count the windows you'll find there's one for each platform. Quite a transformation!
I remember that as being the building next to the hotel, mid station concourse above where the M&S food store is now. At some time in the 80's it moved to the electronic scoreboard type we see today at the head of platforms 1,2 &.3. .
I love the interior of the Central Hotel. A Star Trek club I attended used to meet where the Champagne Bar is now, before the hotel was sold and refurbished (and then sold and refurbished again!). A friend stayed there last year so I get a peek in at the rooms when we met in town. I very much prefer square sausage to links!
JFK actually made his first ever public speech in Central. His dad was US ambassador at the time and JFK was despatched to escort the bodies from the sinking of the SS Athenia back home. All the American dead were laid out on the station concourse and JFK did a 'thank you for your kindness' type speech for the way Glasgow had looked after them. So there we go, the time JFK stayed in Glasgow Central hotel
Hello Roger, excellent introduction to your new railway hotels series. Yes the breakfast looks fabulous and the accommodation rate (at the time you stayed) was outstanding ... especially when compared to London rates. What amazes me is how much guest space was provided in days gone by. I particularly liked the grand staircase ... today's modern hotels use that space to squeeze in more rooms !
I worked for British Transport Hotels 1978/80 at The Caledonian Hotel Edinburgh as a Chef. The training was fantastic and they sent me to Telford College to get my City and Guilds. Sir Peter Parker was Chairman father of Nathaniel Parker. If you look up the Edinburgh evening paper and check the Hotels 75th anniversary there’s photos of me giving out free mince pies and punch. .
Another great video Rog, just as a thought, have you thought about the Queen’s hotel in Leeds to review? Anyway I think I may stay in that hotel in Glasgow now. Keep up the great videos.
Hi James - I'll definitely do the Queens in Leeds at some point, probably sooner rather than later. I went to Leeds Uni (a very long time ago) and went to a few dos there so it will be interesting to see what it's like now. Thanks for watching. 😀
Rog, they were not "British Railway Hotels" but actually "British Transport Hotels" and I should know having been an hotel management trainee with them for four and a half years back in the 1970's. I worked in 10 of their 34 hotels. The Central Hotel had a fantastic restaurant called "Malmaison".
It was absolutely amazing and I had the privilege of seeing "upstairs " and "downstairs " when I was a restaurant cashier. The calm splendour of the restaurant and the intense professional work ethic under Chef Labatte.
@@christinarankin192 BTH had easily by a country mile the best chefs in Britain for any hotel group. Of course, there were a few other notable chefs around, but not as such a large combined group.
@@RogEdwardsTV BTH management training was regarded as the pinnacle of the industry, head and shoulders above any other company and streets ahead of any university degree course. It's difficult to pinpoint a favourite hotel as such because what I remember the most are the people I worked with and was very lucky to have worked with, I should add. It was these experienced staff members that taught me the integral mechanics of the trade. For the "favourite" I probably should say it was Gleneagles, but it wasn't and I have much better and pleasant memories of stints at the Tregenna Castle way down in St. Ives, Adelphi, Liverpool, the Welcombe in Statford-upon-Avon, the Royal Station in Newcastle, the Grosvenor at Victoria London, Station Hotel in Aberdeen, Old Course in St. Andrews and the North British in Glasgow, too. BTH were really good to work for and they also sent me away for a year's cross-training to the fabulous InterContinental in what was then known as West Berlin, where I would earn more per night on tips than I would earn per week with BTH. Back then West Berlin was the show piece of the western world and operated 24 hours. I would leave work at 2am and go clubbing till 8am. Unbelievable.
Stayed there in the late eighties, we were absolutely exhausted and had run ourselves out of cash. We were utterly grateful that they took travelers checks. And it was a nice stay with an included continental breakfast.
Thanks so much for watching! Gosh, I remember my mum running around trying to find places that took traveller’s cheques! Do they even exist anymore? 🤔😂
John Logie Baird made the BTH Central famous in 1927 when he made the historic connection of a television picture from London to the Central. They have a ballroom named after him.
Stayed there with my dad 40 or so years ago, was blown away by the luxury and the very reasonable price. I though it was far superior and cheaper than the one in Victoria. The station hotel in Newcastle is also very impressive and well preserved.
What a great review, took my partner for a bottle of wine and she loved it, would never have thought about going in there, in fact I did not know it existed, 👍
@RogVlogs, please don't forget to visit the Royal Victoria Hotel in Sheffield which was originally the Victoria Station Hotel built by the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway
Yes, the Sheffield hotel is on my list. I think (though I would have to check) that there is still an operational Paternoster lift in the University Library building and I’d like to see, and ride on, that too! 😀
My Mum and Dad have stayed over at the Inverness Station Royal Highland Hotel. They seemed to like it, I thought it looked dated. Absolutely no views over the station at all despite being on one side of the station. The prices particularly at dinner time was frankly eye watering, especially considering there are plenty of choices around the hotel itself. Though the food was nice and well presented. The building itself desperately needing some TLC and a lick of paint particularly on its windows desperately needed. Always really busy. Aberdeen’s Station Hotel also similar
Thanks so much for the information. These hotels have been refurbished so many times over the years, some more often than others. Hope these get the treatment soon!
I've stayed here several times (before it was a Voco) and it is really nice. To avoid those high prices in London you could try the Grosvenor at Victoria - now called the Clernont or the Hilton London Paddington. They're both lovely old hotels with a lot of history. Maybe not quite as grand as the Renaissance St. Pancras but a lot cheaper!

@lanabmc3519 I was planning to stay in the British Transport Hotel in Perth this week - but only found out when I was booking that they have a minimum 3 night stay. Which I’ve never come across before. 😢 Hope to get to the hotel in Kyle of Lochalsh at some point too!
@@RogEdwardsTV I’m nearer to Inverness than the Kyle but my mums family are islanders so I’m there regularly. If you get better weather than now you’ll enjoy it.
And the shower head looks mingin
😱😱
Get to the bloody point you featured people haven' got a spare hour or two to get minor information.
Thanks.
It's a dump - stay away v it
They refurbished it in 2021 - I thought it was quite a nice dump! ☺️
