Trash theory has a great video on how Artic Monkeys had to change their sound to appeal to a US audience. Their original music when they were popular in the UK vs what they make now is like night and day

It seemed to kickoff the Landfill Indie trend (I use that phrase with love) in the UK and yet somehow nothing else that made the charts afterwards sounded anything like it. The lyrics are always good for a laugh even if you don't like the music
Muse showed me that you can be proficient at an instrument and still write great songs. I'm used to "guitar" music being couched in the shred / endless guitar solo category. Big fan of most of their stuff from Origin of Symmetry through 2nd Law.
I’m 40 years old and I have just recently learned how big the Arctic Monkeys are. I don’t think I know a single person who listens to this band. I remember when they came out but had no idea they were this popular
Im also 40 and started to listen to AM circa 5 years ago. Their last staff is brilliant: The Car or TBH&C. They are the best and one of the last good "new" (18 years!) mainstream rock band.
Finn, if you’ve never talked about them whats your opinion on Kings of Leon? Also you mentioned the OC so I’m curious if you have an opinion on Phantom Planet
Death cab has a way of putting you in the imagery they are portraying in the music. One of my favorite bands still to this day. Also that Artic Monkeys B is solid, they had one really good Album and thats it. discography of good stuff too small to put them in upper tiers. here's a band that flew under the radar in the US for some reason that you'll hate ( i love it); Kasabian.
I knew why i liked you Finn. Death Cab are one of my all time favorite bands. Im not into a lot of indie rock, but Death Cab have just truly amazing music. There is very little they have put out that I havent loved.
Where is Linkin Park, System of a Down, Incubus, Fall Out Boy, All American Rejects, Owl City, My Chemical Romance, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Ok Go, Good Charlotte, Thirty Seconds to Mars?
should definitely give some earlier Arctic Monkeys a listen. AM is incredibly tame. The first 2 albums at least had some energy. Brain dead take on Bloc Party. Silent Alarm is a 10/10 album.
As someone who makes a living in cover and wedding bands, if you DON'T play "Mr. Brightside" people will complain. Literally lost count of how many hundreds of times I've played that on stage 😂
Would love to see a part two so I can see your thoughts on The Shins and Kings Of Leon. Two of my favorite bands of all time from my childhood in the 2000s
Death cab for cutie fans, which songs should I listen to as someone whose never heard them? I'm typically a metal/pop punk fan for what it's worth if other songs correlate with that more
I'm not a mega fan, but I respect them and like a lot of their music. My recommendations would be 1. Soul Meets Body 2. I Will Follow You into the Dark 3. A Lack of Color 4. Stay Young, Go Dancing 5. Underneath the Sycamore 6. Home is a Fire 7. For What Reason 8. Crooked Teeth 9. TV Trays 10. This Charming Man and 11. The Sound of Settling. But there are a lot of really great songs in their catalog. They're not metal or pop/punk (though if you want a little more rough/raw indie rock out of them, check out their earliest albums) but I think if you are a person who appreciates good music regardless of genre, they could appeal to you when you are in the midst of your more chill, sad, and thoughtful moods.
Finn talking about why Muse is too in the middle of genres for him to like them was a great description as to why I think they are so great! They are all technically proficient, but it's not just about chops, they rock but they aren't so heavy that they only use screams and growls, and not so indie that they're indie... 🤔 I'm not sure exactly what that means lol For someone who often talks about how bands should try new things and not just sit in a stale genre, Finn refers to music that isn't keeping itself backed into a metaphorical genre corner as if it's a bad thing.
Totally inaccurate. I also love wildly experimental music like Reverorum Ib Malacht or Cecil Taylor. I just don't care for music that's only slightly experimental... it's not commited enough for me.
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA Most experiments yield almost nothing listenable. I am not hating, it is just the nature of experiments by definition. But artists that incorporate those few bits of experimental genius into catchy music or more viable formats deserve credit too. There is likely more variety in the land between Ariana Grande and Cecil Taylor than at those extremities
Damn, Finn out here straight up wrecking my music taste on a Monday 😔! Surprised you didn’t mention The Strokes. I know lots of copy cat bands followed their sound but I think they’re one of the heavy hitters of the early/ mid 2000’s in this genre. Would be curious to hear you talk about them!

All you gotta do is watch the live performance of Mr. Brightside at Glastonbury in 2019 with Johnny Marr, that’ll show you just how HUGE that song is over in the UK. And on top of that, that debut album for The Killers is just so damn good, it’s peak 2000s rock.
just wanted to say i completely agree with your Deathcab opinion, i used to fall asleep to the album Give Up by The Postal Service when i was younger. Ben is a 10/10 musician all around no question.
Gang of Four fricken slap! Their 1979 debut 'Entertainment!' still sounds great. Really dry and harsh, but also kinda catchy. Almost as good as Joy Division. Almost.
I’ll never understand the Muse and Radiohead comparisons. They sound nothing alike besides being a British band with falsetto. They had a sorta similar sound in the 90s because basically all 90s alt rock sounded similar, but they moved into completely different sounds.
Their debut albums, which both acts tried to distance themselves from over time btw, have the same producer. And both vocal styles were very inspired by Jeff Buckley. Matt even got one of his guitars recently. But that's all I can gather. Otherwise they went in different paths and the comparisons just don't hold up. Muse were more inspired by RATM than them, at least musically.
I knew this video would eventually be published. Jack White seems to have a good sense of humor, and would chuckle if you broke wind on his Tellytubby chair.
I was thinking about this the other day: The 2000s is really when rock got divided into “red” and “blue” state rock. I grew up in one of the bluest areas of the country(Bay Area) and in the early part of the 2000s my local rock station played lots of stuff like Godsmack/Staind/Papa Roach/POD etc. Around 2003/04 is when I stopped hearing those bands and started hearing the bands on this tier list. To me the bands on this tier list are PEAK Blue State rock. When I would go visit my family and friends in Fresno and Reno I’d hear a lot more stuff like Breaking Benjamin, 3 Days Grace, A7X, etc on the local rock stations out there. Hardly any of the bands in this vid except for maybe Muse. Anywho do you think because of the Red/blue state rock “divide”, that could be one factor in why Rock has not been as mainstream and popular since 2002? Has anybody else noticed that as well or am I just trippin? To ad my personal very subjective commentary: I can’t stand the White Stripes. To me they ruined rock radio.I would DEFINITELY take Nickelback and their expanded universe over The White Stripes any day lol.

Jack White was also on American Pickers where he asked them to find a mobile recording truck that was used to record live albums by Lynyrd Skyntrd, KISS, and Bob Seger, among others. Interesting episodes.
Arctic Monkeys are known internationally and Morgan Wallen isn’t, prob the reason for the play count difference. Personally, I never really got into anything from Arctic Monkeys past their first album.
If yoy're like 20-30 sth try Humbug&AM. If nearly 40, try latest staff: The Car + TBH&C
Trash theory has a great video on how Artic Monkeys had to change their sound to appeal to a US audience. Their original music when they were popular in the UK vs what they make now is like night and day
Yeah I saw that, I preferred their earlier stuff, they lost their identity for me when appealing to the American market
Jack White made a roller stool for Adam Savage of mythbusters fame. He made a video about it on his channel tested.
Brothers by The Black Keys is nostalgic because it was one of the records my wife was listening to a lot when we first met, but I can’t disagree that it’s commercial music.
I was glad to see the love for Jack White, and that you knew about his upholstery fetish. That is part of why I love him. He all kinds of weird interests. The white stripes are simple but he is actually a very skilled musician and can play a huge variety of instruments. He’s a weirdo. And I love him for it.
“Muse is the butt rock Radiohead” so true it hurts
“Best 2000’s band tier list!”
*starts with a song from 2013*
I loved Muse, but not so much now. Fun fact - having radiotherapy I met a woman who went to school with Bellamy😳
That fact, is in fact, not a fun fact.
@@ChainsawChristmas Yes, but I'm not dead😁
Even tho I love Gorillaz a lot I have to respect the hatred that Finn has for them
Lmao forreal it all comes down to perspective at which the music came out too...age and environment and so on does effect it imo
@@chris-zd9sr Yeah afterall I was born in the early 2000s and most of this music was constantly on MTV and VH1 so I have a lot of love for it especially gorillaz, muse and the black keys
I recommend listening and revieving Biffy Clyro. Crazy rockers from Scotland. Very creative and amazing sounds since early 2000's till today.
Let's hope he at least gets a better first impression than Fantano does, who first heard of them through their WAP cover/parody(?)
@@iliketrains3495 well its easier to find their biggest hit songs than this cover XD ive never heard of it
Maximo Park takes the spot on the back of one 35 minute album that was the peak of an insanely good 2005.
Damm, I didn't know any else even knew of the band
@@OTB2002 They were all the rage back then, along with Bloc Party. It was almost like Oasis and Blur.
Grafitti and Apply Some Pressure are two of the greatest pop songs of all time.
I'd recommend anyone to try 'Whatever People I Say Am, That's What I'm Not', the first Arctic Monkeys album. It seemed to kickoff the Landfill Indie trend (I use that phrase with love) in the UK and yet somehow nothing else that made the charts afterwards sounded anything like it. The lyrics are always good for a laugh even if you don't like the music
OMG, Finn has up to five different opinions than me. I can't stand him!
Muse showed me that you can be proficient at an instrument and still write great songs. I'm used to "guitar" music being couched in the shred / endless guitar solo category. Big fan of most of their stuff from Origin of Symmetry through 2nd Law.
I feel the same way about Muse you feel about Arctic Monkeys and black keys. I’m missing something
Muse are a great live band and 100% suited to stadiums. Saw them in Rome in 2013 fimed for that dvd and was epic.
Fun Fact: the band The Mountain Goats are the source of the name "The Killers", as well as "Satan's Fingers" and "The Hospital Bombers".
Same here. One of my favorite band, of all time, of any era, of any genre. Who knew Finn thought so highly of them? This makes my day!
The content has been impeccable lately
Where is Linkin Park, System of a Down, Incubus, Fall Out Boy, All American Rejects, Owl City, My Chemical Romance, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Ok Go, Good Charlotte, Thirty Seconds to Mars?
Fr
should definitely give some earlier Arctic Monkeys a listen. AM is incredibly tame. The first 2 albums at least had some energy.
Brain dead take on Bloc Party. Silent Alarm is a 10/10 album.
funny thing about Bloc Party, despite sounding a lot like them, they don't like gang of four, they were more inspired by Disco and Franz Ferdinand
I want a butt rock tier list and they better all be S tier because they are
I always loved that gothic type art that gorillaz and korn used. Its got this weird urban invader zim feel to it.
Breaking Benjamin are my pick for the best 2000s band
I remembered loving Arctic Monkeys in 2013, like the AM album I blasted all the time in my car 😂😂
What about their new albums: The Car and TBH&C?
Finn talking about why Muse is too in the middle of genres for him to like them was a great description as to why I think they are so great! They are all technically proficient, but it's not just about chops, they rock but they aren't so heavy that they only use screams and growls, and not so indie that they're indie... 🤔 I'm not sure exactly what that means lol
For someone who often talks about how bands should try new things and not just sit in a stale genre, Finn refers to music that isn't keeping itself backed into a metaphorical genre corner as if it's a bad thing.
8:37 hysteria is a banger. That baseline is god tier, among the greats like Longview and Schism
I mean, if the people who make commercials were into brutal technical death metal, brutal technical death metal would probably sound like car commercial music
100 percent agree I don't get the genre but Death cab is most definitely top shelf music. Something about how it was written it just grabs you.
This video really made me remember how little I like 2000s rock. I was a teen during this time and couldn’t stand almost every one of these bands.
Currently obsessed with Wolfmother’s first two albums
i love every band here
A few suggestion for future episodes in this series: Coldplay, The Detroit Cobras, Kasabian, Franz Ferdinand, The Electric Six, Hard-Fi, The Hot Hot Heat, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Razorlight, MGMT, The Coral, The Kaiser Chiefs, JJ72, Bell X1, The Libertines, The Kings of Leon, The Stokes, Modest Mouse, The Hold Steady - there's some of those i love and some i seriously dislike, would be cool to see Finn and the communities thoughts on any of them.
I teach music in a college and the amount of them who still play Arctic Monkeys is insane to me. I had to Google it, and they're like 20+ years old now. They were popular when I was in college like 10 years earlier, its beyond me.
It’s called being able to write quality timeless songs. I’d expect a music teacher to get that. Do you also not get The Beach Boys or the Beatles?
@@KickflipGnasty you misspelt Kid Rock and Hollywood Undead
How do you feel about Empire of the sun?
They're great, along with MGMT
Only 8 views in 1 minute? Fell off
Statistics are wildly wrong for the first 2 to 3 hours while TH-cam's algorithm evaluates.
@dynamicphotography_ yeah it's a joke
😂😂
Urban Outfitters Core
Jack White had an upholstery job in his youth with a dude who got him into making music, and they started a band . He went from there to a great garage band called The Go, then started the White Stripes.
I'm a Detroiter, and that shit got me sooo hype back in the day
2000s definitely better than 2010s...by a very slim margin. Imo. 🇨🇦🤘🤘...still fascinated that Evanescence opened for Muse last year.
All you gotta do is watch the live performance of Mr. Brightside at Glastonbury in 2019 with Johnny Marr, that’ll show you just how HUGE that song is over in the UK.
And on top of that, that debut album for The Killers is just so damn good, it’s peak 2000s rock.
18:51 Brendan stole Brandons gimmick lol
just wanted to say i completely agree with your Deathcab opinion, i used to fall asleep to the album Give Up by The Postal Service when i was younger. Ben is a 10/10 musician all around no question.
Gorillaz are awesome, and no one will ever take them away from me 😁
I love the Killers’ songs that sound super Alphaville-inspired. It’s such a great combination of upbeat and haunting.
The disrespect for Gorillaz I’m 22 and they’re great.
If there's any band to compare Muse to it's Queen. Especially live.
It’s not about sound it’s about the space they occupy compared to their contemporaries
Everyone forgets The Black Keys made 5 great raw blues albums before they started making car commercial music 😞
This is what I get for being awake?? Sweet
I like your thinking on this!
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA thanks King! Could make for a good video topic too
This makes a lot of sense. Politics has bled into things more than a lot of people would think.
I didn’t realize how much I liked 2000’s rock till you went through these
I didn't quite realize how much I disliked 2000s rock until this video, lmao. I mostly blame car commercials.
Damn Finn lookin' swole lately. Drop that workout routine!
