Dave here, grew up in Sydney, living in Fukuoka…long time. So glad you went to Marrickville Pork Roll. Went there GW 2023, main shop in Marrickville, didn’t know what to order…the guy in front of me ordered, “Pork crackling + Chilli”, I just repeated, and ordered the same…was amazing!!

must say there are not many places in the world where you can eat so many different style of foods and all of them are authentic and delicious... pie, pork roll, sushi roll, kebab, burgers, roti... but i think what's missing is Messina gelato.... oh and across from the Emperor puff there's a Taiwanese shop, their fry stick wrapped in spring onion pancake so good... add a bowl of hot soy milk

Toastiesmith is also good, in the same building as the brothers cafe.

The bin chickens are free, but I do not recommend eating them. Glad to see you in town, wish I had bumped into you guys.
Food is expensive here, but is more to do with the wages of staff, and maybe rents. Unlike the US, we really do not do tipping because our MINIMUM wage is $23.23 per hour. Most places pay more to attract staff, $25-$26 per hour is more likely. We also have penalty rates for those working after certain hours, and weekends. Public Holidays are paid at double-time. Obviously this impacts the price you pay.
Marrickville Pork Roll is the best Banh Mi in Sydney for sure. There's really two that people argue about, but glad to see you are joining me as #teammarrickville
The Lamb & Harissa Snag Roll is also my favourite at BSB. It's harder to get good sausage rolls as bakeries are allowed to use less meat than they used to and use TVP as a filler. Bourke Street has 'more killer, less filler'
There are so many places that you can go that are still cheap. A $10 budget is very much on the low side for a meal now unfortunately, but you can get certain items under $10. Pre-COVID it was certainly cheaper. A full 'meal' at most places will be more in the $16-$22 range.

Marrickville banh mi has been recommended by a lot of people (yet to try it.. but Bay Ngo in Bankstown is pretty good imho as well.).BSB Newtown disappointed me to be honest. Still looking around for great sausage rolls and pie. Apparently Vietnamese bakeries are generally good for those as well.

I actually work around the corner from Railway Square so I'm going to try a couple of these, maybe the lamb wrap and the bao burger. I've walked past there many times. I had a banh-mi yesterday for $8 from another place down the street and it was okay, but it was lacking the soy sauce flavour. The best Banh-mi is out in the suburbs. Spice Alley restaurants are pretty good taste wise for most places, but I found the portion sizes for the price could've been better.

Yes it is. More expensive than it was 5 or even 10 years ago. But the way I was looking at it, is the US dollar (that's where I am) is worth 50 cents more than the Australian Dollar. So something that is 10 dollars in Australia is 6.50 in USD. So it depends on where you live and how the exchange rates are at the time.

If you come to Adelaide you need to try Japanese/Peruvian Restaurant called TUNKI in the lakes hotel. You will enjoy it
