Witold Pilecki of the Leliwa coat of arms "Witold", "Druh"; underground names "Roman Jezierski", "Tomasz Serafiński", "Leon Bryjak", "Jan Uznański", "Witold Smoliński"; codenamed T-IV (born May 13, 1901 in Ołońiec, died May 25, 1948 in Warsaw) - cavalry captain of the Polish Army, co-founder of the Secret Polish Army, soldier of the Home Army, prisoner and organizer of the resistance movement in KL Auschwitz. Author of reports on the Holocaust, so-called Pilecki reports. Accused and sentenced by the communist authorities of the People's Poland to death, executed in 1948. The judgment was annulled in 1990. Posthumously, in 2006 he received the Order of the White Eagle, and in 2013 he was promoted to the rank of colonel. In 1943-1944 he served in the branch of III Kedyw of the Home Army KG (among others as the deputy commander of the 'Chameleon' - 'Jeż' Information and Intelligence Brigade), he took part in the Warsaw Uprising. Initially, he fought as a regular gunner in the NSZ "Warszawianka" company, later he commanded one of the Chrobry II group's units, in Witold's Redoubt (former headquarters of the Rzeczpospolita editorial office.) In 1944-1945 he was in German captivity in Stalag 344 Lamsdorf (Polish: Łambinowice), of VII A in Murnau. He was probably detained on May 8, 1947 by the communist security service of People's Poland. In detention he was tortured by officers of the Security Office, including by one of the cruelest investigators Eugeniusz Chimczak. On March 15, 1948, the captain was sentenced to death. In the second instance, on May 3, 1948, the Supreme Military Court upheld this sentence. The sentence was carried out on May 25 in Mokotow prison on Rakowiecka, by a shot in the back of the head. The executor of the judgment was Piotr Śmietański called "Executioner from Mokotów".
After the exhumations and examinations carried out in 2012, the burial place was not established, although it is suspected that it was the headquarters on the Meadow, where secret victims of UB were secretly hidden so that the memory in Poland would be lost after them. An alternative place to hide the corpse may be the prison area at ul. Rakowiecka in Warsaw.
