Hi, I can't add the mod to the game, I did the tutorial exactly step by step, but every time I go to enter it gives an error "this mod cant be added into your game cause its not an smapi mod" could you tell me help?, I don't know what to do.
I just want to say this is the best I've seen. At first, I watched this and was like "hmmm I'm sure I can find another video to watch, too." But every time I come back to this.
I've now managed to make functioning mods for NPCs, including modded NPCs like Stardew Expanded.
If anyone wants to do more than editing individual images, I recommend finding a mod similar to what you want to make and then looking through the content.json to figure out what they were doing.

Also, check your spelling if things don't work... it's a likely culprit.

Wow this is very helpful in understanding and making a mod and now i have MASSIVE respect for those people who do recolors of sdv because i now realize you have to add text to the content.json for Every. single. texture. you change in a mod.

I'm about to have way too much fun making new mods
I haven't figured out how to get the mod to work but to fix "folder is empty" you have to change the file types into json and the image to png!

i have done everything but i still don't get the portrait? i don't get an error message or anything
I followed everything you said but when I test the mod it simply doesn’t change how the portrait looks. Smapi seems to read the mod correctly but idk why I keep seeing the original portrait :(
is this possible for a mod like the unofficical brewery mod and elles seasonal buidlings i want to make that but i dont know how to link that in the content.json

Hello! I can help you with that, what you need to do when making the manifest and content json folders is go through notepad, paste the code in and then click "save as" and then "all files" and then you name it manifest.json or content.json to save it as a json file :)
@@Saltybisquit thank you so much! i was testing it with a random image by only making a content file to see if it says "no manifest.json file" so i know it works correctly! and it did after i used your tip! thank you so much that means a lot since i wanted to start coding!!!!

hello cozygoat I want to try to update the fruits and veggies mod which is outdated at the moment I say this, I would love it if you could teach me how to add things besides changing the texture of the game
Opening the game says "Assets folder empty" though I have the copied PNGs in there
Whenever I rename it to .json It just remains as a text document
i got a popup saying that it may harm my computer to open the exe file. is it safe to run? i don't really want to get any viruses and/or ruin any of my systems or files i have.
Is this still relevant to setting up 1.6+ mods? Im assuming this method is new enough that it wouldnt be affected

I tried doing this method. Whenever i tried to load it, it said it couldn't because "the folder is empty" which it wasnt.
I follow it as well as I could, but I can't get it to work for the farmer sprite change.
EDIT: Nevermind, I forgot that I had other mods that overrode it!

help!! When loading the game it says that there is no manifest.json file, but there is. I checked if it had something wrong on the coding but it was all right.
Mine keeps telling me that my files are empty (it is not) 😭😭
Are the manifest and content files actually .Json files? Or does it say they're txt.files? I had the same issue but had to convert them to .Json files and it was fixed.

@arthursmarthur hmm interesting so that's not the issue. I wish I could help but that was the only problem I ran into. If I could see the files that'd give me a better idea on what to do.

@@user-uv1fv9cr7v make sure there are not duplicate files and i would just try and reexamine everything very carefully if you can. that’s the only way i found my mistakes

you have to change the format for your json files! and make sure image is png!
How would I do this for a character in another mod?

Before this, I had actually already found the issue. I had to convert my files into being json files through a converter then I had to copy and paste the words ‘manifest.json’ and ‘content.json’ from another mods title to my own mods title, which finally got my mod to work!

That's an issue with how Finder works. I had the same issue. There a video on here that explains how to find it.
