It was a big oversight on my part and I should have phrased it differently in the video. Eric Barone defines his own view on the matter a bit more in this article I found after I read the comments: apps.apple.com/us/story/id1437369473 I'm going to do my absolute best to not make a mistake like this again in the future. what i love about the stardew community is that several people on steam reviewed it and said they pirated it, but then felt bad because it was so great and decided to buy it. so wholesome
Awh. I did that once with another game. My bf provided me with a copy, I loved it, so I bought it. I told him that if he wanted to play it he should also pay for it, because it's worth paying for. But since then I haven't gotten any pirated copies, I buy all my games :) I mostly buy indie games and those guys tend to need my money to create more great games.
i love the fact that his girlfriend stood by him the whole time for 4+ years when there wasnt even an assurance that the game would be a hit or could even be a big miss. The uncertainty during that time must be so stressful and hard to go by. What a heart warming, loving couple just like the ones in his game itself.
He wanted to focus on releasing a polished, feature-rich final product instead of rushing something out to make a quick buck. Bless his perfectionist heart. Eric is my favorite developer of all time.
When people complain about this being a harvest moon rip off but the original creator of harvest moon met Eric and really adores the fact he inspired him soo much.
I think there's resentment because some people think Stardew Valley is the OG when in fact a lot of elements were taken from Harvest Moon. I used to despise self-proclaimed gamers who only play SV and think it's a unique/original game especially when HM made my childhood.
@@lilycha9398 The last good Harvest Moon game was on PS1. I think it's pretty forgivable that younger players only know the genre through Stardew Valley.
@@lilycha9398 tho i dont really agree with the second comment, the series have definitely went downhill in their more modern tittles. I played sv first before harvest moon loved a lot of thier games but i can definitely tell why sv is very highly regarded, especially after the last tittle harvest moon and story of seasons have been very...... Both expected and dissappoininting. I dont think their games could ever go to its former days 😢

My grandpa died a year after Stardew Valley was released. And then, when i first played it, the main character is going through the same things that i am going through; loosing my family, working for a corporation like a soulless hollow, stressed and beaten up with what the world has to offer... It really hit me like a truck at first, but at the end, Stardew Valley gave me the will to move forward. Thank you Eric. Thank you so much.
I cant remeber, but I would guess that my original comment has to do with him being inspired by the creator of harvest moon. He absolutely made stardew all by himself so it can't have been about him getting help or something.

Yes!! It sounds like it was incredibly taxing on her too, she must’ve had a lot of belief in him to support him financially and emotionally for so long. I hope she’s never taken for granted by the community! Or by him for that matter
I know I'm late, but I came to the comments to look for this. While Eric sure sounds like a very capable individual, it sure sounds like Amber was essential for his wellbeing during development. Thank you, Amber!! Well, and thank you as well Eric, since the game truly is amazing and I dumbfounds me to think it was made by a single person.
Completely agree. He deserves a ton of credit for his work on the game, but no one gets to these kinds of things on their own. It sounds like she was instrumental to his health.

the fact he made this game alone, became a millionaire and extremely recognized by his effort and still doesn't be bragging and showing up shows how much of a legend he is. he doesn't even have an active instagram or whatever, he deadass just developed one of the best games in this actual industry and moved on, gotta love how humble he is.
I simply love Stardew Valley. It is the game to play when you are feeling down. Its like therapy, and always draws me back for another hundred hours every so many months of time.

I need to point out, like many others... how incredibly nice and respectful the creator is. A few years ago I was interested in translating the game into dutch, and I asked him for permission/tips etc on it. While he was extremely busy working on the multiplayer patch, he still found the time to respond in a genuinely nice and enthusiastic way. To this day I still feel bad for never having finished that project. "real life" got in my way several times so I never got beyond translating a few files. But I never forgot how passionate this man was about this game.
@@theannap39 Not to my knowledge. I know someone else somewhere WANTED to start one, but they never got started at all. Maybe I'll try again in the future, if my PC allows it.
My 10 year old brother would love a Dutch translation for stardew valley. He sometimes has some difficulty with English. I think its a great idea and someone will probably do it in the future.
I also love how many little details there are in the game. Like I used the "lookup anything" mod and looked up a worm patch and there was some text saying like "how are you seeing this???"

Yes because a dumbed down farming simulator in 2D form is something one can call a quality content rich game... Eric: "The story clearly illustrates the fight against capitalism.' Me: creates massive spreadsheets of crop information to find the fastest way to unnecessary levels of profit
Yeah lol exactly. Capitalism isn't the enemy, your ow farm is capitalism. The issue is elitism and monopoly, which is what that chain store in the game is. It makes me sad people confuse what capitalism is and demonize it when it's just an umbrella term.
@@Lilacs4 People demonize capitalism because capitalism's internal logic necessarily leads to elitism and monopoly. The megacorporate homogeneous hellscape we live in, powered by slave labor, with the rich able to subvert democracy, is like this BECAUSE of capitalism, not in spite of it. People have been foreseeing these ends since capitalism's inception hundreds of years ago, and their warnings only grow more understated with every passing decade. Having a farm and making a living is not "capitalism." Privatization and profit motive, the source disease of untold amounts of human suffering, is capitalism. Capitalism was supposed to fulfill the promises of the Enlightenment, to break away from monarchy and provide of system of justice, dignity, and liberty. But with the funneling of wealth that happens invariably under capitalism, that justice, dignity, and liberty falls in fewer and fewer hands. Capitalism began to resemble feudalism as far back as its inception and implementation, with the Gilded Age. This was fixed when socialists and anarchists won labor victories that put a bandaid on capitalism, and these bandaids have been picked away bit by bit until we entered the neoliberal era we live in today. Again, elitism and monopoly are the logical and unavoidable consequence of capitalism. Unjustifiable hierarchy, funneling of wealth, homogenization, economic crisis, and, ironically, erasure of the individual are symptoms of capitalism, not external things that happen in spite of it. Homelessness, poverty, needless imperial Forever Wars, fascism, and the climate change that threatens to kill us all is the predictable and empirically provable consequence of capitalism.
@@Yet.Another.Rapper.KiG.V2 We're talking about Stardew Valley, not politics. There's no history of slavery in Stardew Valley, so I think your comment would be better used on a political socialist video, since it's rather off-topic. And in regards to everything you've said, that's a very weak strawman argument because correlation does NOT equal causation, a typical flaw in radical anti-capitalist arguments. I'm not interested in arguing politics here, my comment was addressing the VOCABULARY and DEFINITIONS in relationship to the GAME. If you prefer the government owning everything and spoon feeding you bread and water and deciding what you are allowed and aren't allowed to do, I guess that's your choice? But I prefer a world like Stardew Valley where privately owned farms are allowed to thrive and small businesses can provide families freedom and variety and a sense of purpose in life.
@@Yet.Another.Rapper.KiG.V2 Keep it up. There is nothing more entertaining than people complaining about the evils of capitalisms while posting on their phones/computers while waiting on their next 2 day shipment from Amazon. While also enjoying luxuries such as not dying of an easily preventable disease, cheep and plentiful heat and power and not having to work 16 hours a day in a field in the hopes that you can save up enough food to survive the winter.
@@Lilacs4 No, it's not off topic. You can't talk politics and then get mad when someone who knows more about politics than you takes issue with what you said. Don't backpedal, it's cowardly. Second, no, nothing I've said is a strawman. It is not mere coincidence, every consequence listed and the dozens of others I didn't even touch on, from alienation to suppression of innovation to the necessity of an underclass, these things can be traced directly to the fundamental prescriptions of capitalism. Again, these issues have been predicted for hundreds of years, long before they manifested in the abomination we know as neoliberal capitalism today. Third, it is really ironic you would accuse me of strawmanning, mke an unsubstantiated gesture at a fallacy, and then proceed to strawman my political prescriptions. Nothing about socialism or any of its peripheries is about the government "spoon feeding me water and bread" or having totalitarian control of my life, if I wanted to beg for scraps and have no control over my destiny then capitalism would be working just fine for me. Socialism means simply "worker ownership of the means of production," and if that doesn't click with you, that's fine, ignorance is not a sin, but being at the top of the Dunning-Krueger mountain and pretending you understand something based off of propaganda-laden stereotypes crosses the line into irresponsibility. Lastly, have fun starting a business with the $50k liquid assets necessary to start a business in the US. Totally achievable for the majority of the population. And go look into how many conglomerates own everything and tell me we have "variety." We have different paint jobs, sure, but homogenization, monopolization, and corporate welfare under capitalism has been increasing exponentially to the point that your idea of what starting a small business under capitalism is like is unachievable fiction for the majority.
I just started playing stardew valley a couple of weeks ago and im obsessed - knowing the background of this game gave it a whole new meaning to me! This guy is amazing! True artist.

one of my most favourite parts of the game are the characters. they're all so genuine and varied and well thought out, which is depressingly rare in games and even movies/shows. speaking of depression, Shane's story line was the one that brought me to my knees because i absolutely saw myself in him, so much it was painful, but it was also a stepping stone for me on my way to mental wellness. it felt like seeing myself through the eyes of another, with no distortion, realizing how frightening the shit i said, did and tried must've been for others. it made me think twice before dismissing someone's claims of caring.
A few years ago, I pirated this game after hearing good things about it and seeing gameplays. Needless to say, it didn't take long for me to actually buy the game in Steam. Best decision ever.

Of all the articles and videos I've consumed on this concept, I wasn't expecting much. I feel like this is the most comprehensive and clear overview I've ever seen. You manage to provide a more balanced analysis of the timeline and the efforts that went into it. The resources and images you bring in are so helpful, even though I've seen most of them before the juxtaposition and context is so well done.
I started watching the video out of curiosity, which more times than most leads to me skipping to key points. Surprisingly I watched the whole thing through without skipping or dropping the video as it truly held my attention. Interesting facts and great narration. Thanks for the pleasant experience. :)
Something you can really tell by playing Stardew Valley vs the Harvest Moon series is what parts of the original series he enjoyed and which ones he didn’t. While I’m not personally familiar with the Rune factory games, after pouring hours into Harvest Moon installments throughout my life you really end up playing them for different things. The main gameplay loop is crops and animal farming, that’s how every farming game is going to be, but every other major aspect has one major difference that changes what they feel like. Mines are the biggest example, there’s no combat in HM and the mine gameplay is mostly encouraged as an alternative for days you can’t farm. There’s little reason to go very often and for it’s purpose in HM that’s exactly how it needs to be. But in Stardew you go whenever you’re lucky, it’s needed to get the materials necessary to make your farming easier. The festival’s in HM are something to prepare for and compete in, while Stardew festivals are more a chill day off with friendship bonuses. In the end farming games are farming games and when one studio has a near monopoly on it with only two series a little indie flavor to get new people interested has really benefited the whole genre, now there are many new indie farming games with their takes on what combinations are most fun.
Not often have I seen such a young channel having such an extremely high quality of production. Your channel will be going places! I'm glad that this video got recommended to me (and obviously to many other people, too). Keep up the great work!

Eric developing this game on his own really puts a strong personal touch on it, so much so that I feel like this unknown man, this "Concerned Ape" is an old friend that I would be happy to see again. I love the game, and cant wait to see what is in store for the future from this amazing indie developer!
And the modding community is amazing too! Within a week of the Dec 21 1.5 update Stardew Valley Expanded (the most popular mod) and all the supporting mods had updated! It’s crazy how dedicated all the mod devs are!
It's because ConcernedApe shared the update files with all of the big mod developers prior to release so they would be able to get everything ready and prevent modded players from having broken games.
This is partly why he is my inspiration, because for every update he makes he takes the time to polish it and double check, and tests it. He wants the game to be good and not bad.
This man is my inspiration. Not only he is intelligent and artsy, he is also very humble, simple, and just a wholesome person in general. His story about why he makes the game, and his love for nature is similar to mine. Its rare finding somebody like him these days, and the fact that the game is amazing is a cherry on top.
i want to be like him. i think he embodies so much of what i want to do in the future, that it makes me emotional.. this is the first time a video game has gotten such a personal connection and gave me motivation to pursue my own future.
That one quote at the end really puts a smile in my face, not only do we know that this man is gonna make more games as wonderful as Stardew Valley but we also know that these games are in the right hands, and are not gonna be used as money making machines
Loved this video. My husband and I played hours and hours of Stardew when we were apart, (long distance). It holds a special place for us. It was amazing seeing the backstory to how it was made. Love your other videos too, you do a wonderful job in making them, look forward to more in time! Very unique and a nice fresh look at gaming.
I discovered this game just a few months ago, and boy, it's been a lifeline with COVID isolation. It's so wholesome and relaxing, I'm so glad it exists.
You can tell that we’ve lost the auteur game developer over the years and I think one of the best things about Stardew is that it’s unquestionably one persons vision since it was only him making it. I’m so glad he proved that solo development can in some cases succeed
As someone who is trying to also make my own game, i dont know how he was able to do this all on his own. I just started development this year but i see months and months of coding and design ahead of me and thats just to get a rough draft going, making it polished will probable add an insane amount of time.
I watch this video almost every week to stay motivated and inspired since Eric Barone is the man who brought out my passion to pursue indie game development. Thank you for making this so well!

@@ThatGuyGlen Update: I released my first game on Steam and Nintendo Switch last week. It's called Smushi Come Home! Thank you again for making this video Glen, was truly inspiring to hear Eric's story and you told it perfectly!
Eric was just 99% ripping off an existing game, in 2D old school graphic that is not hard to make for game dev. Eric copied almost all, the gameplay, features, and even the story of Harvest Moon.
@@Therizinosaurus could u pls elaborate on how eric "copied" and "ripped off" old school existing games? there's a difference between getting inspiration from a product, and straight up stealing one.
"According to Eric, however, the [Harvest Moon] series became progressively worse after Back to Nature." I physically, actually nodded at that moment. So true.
The more recent "Harvest Moon" games aren't actually Harvest Moon games. Natsume, the localisation company, ran away with the IP and have been making these knock-offs. The real series, from the developers of the good Harvest Moon games, is now called Story of Seasons.
I agree that it started going downhill after BtN (Or FoMT if you prefer) but I felt it really took a nosedive after AWL. Though I confess I don't think I can go back to playing those after playing SDV, it spoiled me. XD
Stardew Valley is such an amazing game with a wholesome fanbase 😭. I'm having such a blast with it, Sebastian and Alex are probably my fav characters, Alex mainly because of one certain line if you romance him with the male farmer, so touching.
"You realize the thing you thought was good actually isn't. You realize why and you improve on it. And that's just an endless cycle." Inspiring words to live by no matter what or where you are in life. From one Eric to another, congrats on an excellent game, Eric!

I absolutely adore this game. From the moment you start playing you can feel the love and effort that went into it. The idea that one person could create this entire game is unbelievable because of how big and great it is - but also very believable because every single thing works in such harmony together that it could only have come from one beautiful mind. Stardew Valley has more heart and soul than perhaps any game I've ever played. Thank you so much Eric Barone.

The amount of work indie game developers do is insane. Amazing how one person could do so many things and create something this big. I'd take a lot of pride in that too
I've bought the game 4 times on different platforms. This game is so worth it. there is love in each pixel, in each line of the code and you can feel it radiate from the game.
Eric is an absolute legend!! He's always very dedicated to the community, always add more content, like the recent 1.5 update with hours of new content. Such an amazing work
Eric's absolutely incredible, an inspiration for creatives trying to put something out. But here's a big one I was thinking about while hearing about these long work days and his tireless efforts; remember not to self-exploit yourself just because a boss isn't around to do it for you. Work is work, and if you're doing something for work, you need breaks, and you need a life outside of that work, even if it's just video games or whatever.
EDIT: People in the comments have rightly pointed out that the story isn't about the fight against capitalism, but instead choosing to follow your dreams, form real relationships, and help out your neighbors, rather than being greedy. Eric Barone defines his own view on the matter a bit more in this article I found after I read the comments: apps.apple.com/us/story/id1437369473

Its great! Fortunately i found it when i need a game to help me with these stressful times.

Eric: "The story clearly illustrates the fight against capitalism.'
Me: creates massive spreadsheets of crop information to find the fastest way to unnecessary levels of profit
And go look into how many conglomerates own everything and tell me we have "variety." We have different paint jobs, sure, but homogenization, monopolization, and corporate welfare under capitalism has been increasing exponentially to the point that your idea of what starting a small business under capitalism is like is unachievable fiction for the majority.

one of my most favourite parts of the game are the characters. they're all so genuine and varied and well thought out, which is depressingly rare in games and even movies/shows. speaking of depression, Shane's story line was the one that brought me to my knees because i absolutely saw myself in him, so much it was painful, but it was also a stepping stone for me on my way to mental wellness. it felt like seeing myself through the eyes of another, with no distortion, realizing how frightening the shit i said, did and tried must've been for others. it made me think twice before dismissing someone's claims of caring.

Going into a computer science degree as well, Eric gives me so much hope and motivation to keep doing what I'm doing with computers. He honestly inspires me so much with what he was able to create. I'm so grateful that Stardew Valley exists, it's one amazing game.
This literally made me cry. What a legend. I'm so proud of this man.
The best video about Stardew and Eric himself of what I've found, it's great to know how it was done, what was it in very early stages and how the developer describes his own process of work. Keep it up!
Thank you for that huge compliment!
I wish I could hug Eric, I literally feel such a strong connection to him from the game and even though it sounds crazy I feel like the game was a bonding experience between us! I feel the passion, the determination, everything he put into the game. I have never felt that way about any game before, and he is absolutely right.

I've bought the game 4 times on different platforms. This game is so worth it. there is love in each pixel, in each line of the code and you can feel it radiate from the game.
I really love this game c: So much, that I actually bought it twice xd (PC and Switch), and it is every Penny worth it.
Penny ;) I see what you did there
I bought it 3 times as well. One of my favorites! PC, Switch and Mobile
definetly worth it for penny gotta agree there
Same, I have it for the ps4 and switch :)
And mobile almost forgot that
Eric is an absolute legend!!
