    We ate here in October and it was amazing. Very easy to find behind the Accademia and cheap. Everyone was friendly and it's a good place to go for a snack while exploring the back canals of Venice. Directly across from this location is one of the last remaining gondola makers. Well worth a visit and you won't be disappointed!

    • @WhatashameMaryJane

      All very accurate Patrick. I will only add that it is only cheap if compared to touristy spots, but as for local places it is absolutely average. I hope that if this video will bring any new customers, they will at least say hi when they enter and try to have a chat with the people behind the counter. That's how you show respect in such a place.

    THIS, rather than pizza or pasta bolognese, is what one should seek out in Venice! You have to get out of San Marco and to the other side of the canal in Accademia to find Schiavi. Unfortunately, too many who visit Venice fail to explore the areas away from San Marco. Schiavi is tops for cicchetti.

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. Do you know Venice well? Where are you from?

    • @jirimondo
      @jirimondo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WhatashameMaryJane Reasonably well. One of my very favorite restaurants is Al Covo which is in Castello. I'm in the US (Philadelphia suburbs & NYC) but have a home in Lunigiana (Pontremoli). I was the one that replied with a post on the falò (2) that occurs in Pontremoli in January.
      One challenge is to get visitors to Italy to see more than the big 3 (Rome, Florence & Venice). Fact is there isn't really one Italy, it's a mosaic of a 100 little Italy's all with their own cuisine and language (forged over time when most people, in their life, didn't travel more than 50 km from where they were born). The infinite of Italy isn't a product of its largeness but of its intimacy. And seeing, feeling and learning that micro Italy requires one to match the tempo of the country, to slow down and to understand la dolce far niente. Unfortunately, that's hard to market. And it certainly doesn't fit into 10 days and 5 cities...

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jiri Nechleba Such beautiful words you wrote. And thanks for reminding me your previous comment.
      I think you’re one of the very few people who understands the essence of Italy. As for the fact that it doesn’t market well...I don’t know, with my videos I kind of market it, but at the same time I’m not that sorry that the real sode of it is hard to market, because mass tourism inevitably ruins everything.

When i was backpacking many moons ago we would never afford this canapes, we used to sleep at the venice train station with other backpackers and buy food from local grocery shops and make our own sandwiches, oh then used to window shop for a dessert. Good old days.

    Thanks for the tip! Looking forward to eat at this place in September. You have a great way to present this place. Very complete video!
    I did capture a certain negativity in regards to tourists though. It should be said that tourism and tourists have kept Venice alive and thriving, and supported all these small businesses in good shape. And it's mostly tourists that are watching your videos. If one tourist complains about children playing ball, doesn't mean all tourists are like that. We're also a very diverse group. ;)

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The negativity is not about tourists in general, but rather to a system that promotes massified tourism. The average tourist in Venice nowadays wouldn't even visit unless they're allowed to take selfies in front of each famous place, that's the problem. There are also many tourists who are genuinely interested about the real culture and the history of Venice. I'm sure you're one one the latter and I'm glad you're going to visit this osteria. Tell them I say hi!

      Speaking Italian is definitely a big advantage, but most of locals can speak English and as Alessandra said, they appreciate when foreigners talk to them and try to make a bond. While we were shooting she made me notice that she said "buongiorno" to every single person coming in, but 90% of them didn't even respond back, because most of the tourists just don't care about the people, all they want is to get their food and their drinks.

    I used to go to Venice 7 or 8 times a years....and for many years. I don't get to do that anymore. I miss Venice greatly. I will go back someday. I need to find this shop....oh wait, I typed the first bit of this before finishing the video. I don't want to be part of the problem. Venice is way too overrun with tourists.

      Venice needs people who truly care about it. If you're one, you should visit as often as you want. In the next months I'll show you ways you can support its inhabitants who really care about the city and don't want to squeeze as much money as they can out of what they simply inherited.

      @@WhatashameMaryJane I do so much want to go back. I'm crying as I type this. I feel so lucky to have been able to get to know Venice as well as I do. I dearly miss the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, truly a special place on this planet. I miss my favorite pizza place, Trattoria Pizzeria Da Mamo. I miss the backwater canals that tourists dare not go to. Venice is such a special place, it pains me that it is overrun by clueless tourists. I know the history. Why was Venice even built in the first place? To escape the hordes of invaders from the north. I really should go back soon, improve my Italian, and try to help Venice remain what it is, a jewel for humanity.

    Okay, last comment. No cruise ships in Venezia! They are ruining the water level and the culture. Stop it! Spend at least a couple of nights there. It is SO worth it! 😍

      It's not a cheap place for sure, the main dishes were between 15 and 23. Although in NY I would never get this quality for the same price..

    • @crisyorke1328
      @crisyorke1328 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      NY does have great quality food, but indeed, the Italian Mama, and the old school European are the expert at creating such wholesome and homemade yet luxurious cusine. Very impressed!

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cris Yorke Honestly I think the main difference is in the ingredients. I think being a good cook in NY must be so much more difficult than in Europe, cause the quality of the ingredients is so low, that in order for a dish to actually have a good taste you must be a magician

    • @crisyorke1328
      @crisyorke1328 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are fresh ingredients throughout America, and in NY. Though I would say that one has to look around for that. It also depends on ones understanding of what constitutes good quality ingredients and ones tastebuds.

    Help! I can't watch this. Only Italy that knows the science of combining what is best for our palette in its simplicity. Left the country 2 years ago after decades of living there. That's what I miss the most.

      I didn't put it just because I thought that Patreon is something people who already know me well would register to, whereas I think this video will reach people who have no idea who I am. But you're right, I should put it anyways and I will in a moment.

    interesting to hear the change of the last 30 years ... beyond a certain limit tourism leads to the destruction of the social relations of a city and its customs

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Mass tourism is literally destroying the city of Venice. I'll talk about it in future videos. It's a very delicate topic.
