They are plastic y-straps, I have zero issues with them. I have the same system on my Oakley Aero helmet, I prefer that they lay flat. That being said Like any helmet depending on your head shape and location of your ears people might experience something different. That being said always good to try them on if you can. In the case of Rapha they have a good return policy within 90 days. Hope that helps.
That rapha helmet is looks cool the thickness is enough to protect your from accident
