I swapped two paintings for an 80’s Rolex Explorer II

- The Rolex Explorer II is a much rarer watch than the Rolex Submariner. They look quite similar, but the Submariner is much more popular at the moment. I think this will change in time when people realise that the Explorer II is far less common than the ubiquitous Sub! The Explorer II 16550 was only made for four years between 1985 and 1989 and this one dates to 1988. I swapped two of my original paintings for this watch and gave the owner £6300 in part exchange. He paid £7500 including auction commission for the watch in 2022. They were retailing at £10,000 at the time! They’re now retailing for a lot less, be wise the market has changed and dipped…so, now I think is a good time to buy one
This one is for sale and you can see it here www.ebay.co.uk...

Great video, very accurate analysis. In my 4.5 years in the game as a watch collector and enthusiast, I collected a lot from MaMaCoo I was thinking I was able to get a blue SD but I'm not vip enough, but I'm not giving up. Hehe. Great video.
Thank you
Great video David, just to clarify, it's a 'bracelet' not a 'strap' (straps are bits of leather or fabric). It's a 'serial number', not a 'reference' or 'registration' number and the other number is a 'model' number. The Explorer II 'does' more that the Submariner (except the depth rating) as it has a GMT hand which is a 2nd 'complication' after the date. Hope this helps, you're welcome 🙂
Thanks
It’s ridiculous what that man paid for that watch. realistically today that should be worth about 3k tops the issue is that these things have been wildly overvalued and it is only fair that Idiots who jumped on the watches and caused pain for genuine watch lovers like myself take some pain.
They’re really not idiots. Many have made a lot of money out of their watches!
what a salesman!! ty David

Awesome upload David,
I like the Explorer better than the Explorer II, but I have a feeling the brushed bezel on the latter is much less prone to showing scratches if you actually wear your watches.
I’d love an early 70’s Explorer, but such big money now
Comparing a explorer 2 with a submariner is " akin to apples & oranges 😮
There is no comparison in the Rolex world " as a sub has ALWAYS been the most sought after piece whether you agree or not?
And the explorer has ALWAYS been entry level at best on par with an Air- king .
Nothing wrong with them but again a sub will always command a faster sale & premium 😁
Just my 2 cents after 50 years collecting these watches 😁👊
Some very good points, thank you.
Is this not the same watch you unboxed a couple of years ago and was going to sell it for 10k +??
It is…If you can contact me through my website that would be best. Regards
The reality is sir. Why did you think that watch would hold its value? It is a steel Rolex from the 1980s it’s still in real terms worth an awful lot of money considering I had the chance to buy that very watch about 24 years ago brand-new for £1500. I didn’t buy it and I’ve always regretted that but I’m one of these watch lovers who take the ball the view, why should watches really hold value that much?
We’ve all had plenty of missed opportunities. Watches, cars, properties. The market is the market and top brand watches have always been good investments. They’re not making any 1980s vintage Rolex anymore!
Another very interesting video David 👍 Can you do a video on how to tell a real Rolex from a fake one pleasssssssse 😊👍😊
I think he has done previously.
Flip it fast, watches are gonna keep slipping for some time, even Rolex gonna lose another 25% on average next 18 months imo. There's too many of them on the market. Mate I was trying to sell a 1930s Tudor in superb condition, serviced, running great, and potential customer in the US was complaining about the most miniscule perceived flaws. Politely told her to buy a new one.
Ssssssh he's trying to sell it...
Looking at the band, I wouldn't think it was real, even though it's right. It looks loose where it attaches to the watch. The watch itself looks good.. Maybe that's why it went for cheap originally? Given the current climate, who'd think a Rolex would drop in value? But..that's the 80s for you!
Older Rolex bracelets had hollow steel links because they were easier and cheaper to make and lighter watches were more popular back then, so the pins holding them together would fatigue and bend over time with extensive wear. The links will sag and get all jangly, and the ones that attach to the watch case will lose their flush fit. They can be reconditioned but it's expensive and kind of a pain in the ass, or you can go to a company that makes solid link steel bracelets that retrofit to this generation of cases...or if your watch is new enough to still be in Rolex's service window (I think 30 years from the original production date) they'll refurb/replace the bracelet on request if you send the watch to them for service.
This doesn't happen with the newer solid steel bracelets (I think pretty much everything they've made since 2010 has been built this way) because the fully machined construction means the pins are completely captive so there's no hollow space for them to bend and deform into as the bracelet moves around on your wrist over time. They went to solid endlinks (the ones that attach to the case) and center links earlier than 2010, I think starting in the late 90s, so deformation on the fitment of those bracelets is significantly less severe but still a bit of an issue.
Excellent info, thank you
Had this for 7 years sold it for more than twice what I paid for it at the height of the hype madness.
You did well!
To be honest, David, your Explorer 2 looks nothing like a Submariner.
well, a little artistic licence!
@DavidHarperAntiquesTV Yes, of course, the Rolex Explorer 2 is a superb watch in its own right.
I'd love a GMT!
Should have got a Submariner date which is a classic Rolex and looks nothing like that, that Explorer II is not as nice looking and not nearly as desirable and whatever u say, that bracelet is worn AF. Hope you get your money for it.
I said it’s rarer and will likely, like the Explorer I, become rated as people realise the rarity. Subs are far more common and nothing wrong with this bracelet!
@@DavidHarperAntiquesTV Yes, I heard what you said, it is rarer, question is, does that make it more desirable? No doubt the Sub is more common, that is because since its release it has been their sports flagship best seller, put simply, the demand for Subs has never softened over decades. The bracelet link pins are slightly worn with time, causing the casing to droop slightly. Mine is the same after 30 years of wear, its just natural. Good luck with you sale, someone is going to be very happy.
