My Grandad had a few horses on his farm and one of them was a shire horse. I had to get to to come over to the gate to climb up on it. It was a really nice horse. I didn't need reigns or a saddle to ride him. Of course, I was like six or seven years old and didn't have permission, but he was a gentle old giant and didn't move fast. It's sort of like being a flea riding on a dogs back.

Upset people - Please note, this teamster is more "whoa" that "go" with mare. I see him popping the reins to get her attention back to him, otherwise she looks like she'd pull those logs into the next town. She is very well behaved for being SO game to pull. She obviously loves to throw her weight into that collar and make things move. She certainly is bred for the job. Her Teamster yells encouragement during the pulling contests and her expression is keen. And aside from needing equipment adjustments (better padded collar, better harness and a different bit) I say good for them. He found a GEM in this mare and his admiration and affectionate pats are proof of that.

My Opa had a Nederlands Terkpaard or a Dutch Draft in English, he was a beast of a thing, huge not just in height but in muscle and weight. He loved working, but when he didn't he got fussy. You would try to take him out for a walk and he wouldn't budge, make him change stables and he would just stand there, looking at you, but if you got out his work harness, well then you had one happy horse. He lived happily until 3 years ago when he hurt himself due to old age so my Opa retired him and he passed away just last year, 31 years of age. His name was Sterk which is Dutch for Strong.

She has the strongest concentration I have ever seen! most horse pull, give a little and need a little push to get going again. all she needs is the go-ahead, and she is through it with very obvious determination. WOW. most amazing horse I have seen.

Petra does know her strength and that she has the ability to stop when she wants, but doesn't because she ENJOYS HER WORK. She's well fed, well cared for, and looks like a fit and healthy draft.
@• Nala • I assume the Spanish horses you're talking about are the Lipizzaner from spanish riding schools? Those horses aren't trained in fear. They also are kept better than most people. Most trick horses are trained through proper horsemanship, not out of fear. Making a horse do intricate tricks without their consent is actually a lot harder than earning their partnership in the act, and people tend to do things the easy way.

Looks like Petra knows her work! Such a good made. I'm really glad the guy doesn't use a whip to "encourage" her like most people would. Instead he uses his reins to encourage her with certain movements, like shaking/trembling them. The even wiser move being he uses his voice over all of that. Petra doesn't seem very uncomfortable, her ears are neutral despite the flopping of them. Her body displays only the pulling stress and she doesn't appear to want to get away from her trainer let alone the logs. Seems like Petra thinks it's just another day on the job. Way to go Petraa!
In competition it is illegal to use anything but your voice to ask the draft horse to pull. You can't even slap the reins. Petra just loves to pull. I love how she turns left and right at a call.

Crazy Horse That's just a saying. An average horse has about 15hp. A draft horse is much more powerful since its bred to haul shit ton of weight. And this specific horse looks pretty much on steroids. So its gotta be at least 20hp.
What a beautiful working relationship this man and horse have! At first I wasn't crazy about the chain being used as a girth, but then considered that with the amount of strain being put on it, perhaps its to make sure nothing breaks, which could definitely cause her injury. Its obvious that he is very proud of her,she looks very well taken care of. She even looks proud of herself!

I mean, that's like with police dogs. You usually see them happy when they're on-duty. While it's not carrying loads, it's a physical and dangerous work, yet no one's forcing them to do it. Must be said that this only works with fully domesticated animals. Cats would be much trickier to handle, even though I recall stories of cats in palliative care who appeared to work with humans just fine without running all over the place causing trouble.

I love how some morons in here seem to think that this is abuse. As someone who has used horses for pulling, plowing, logging etc, I can tell you that these guys LOVE being worked. Everytime I would go to the stable to hook them up, they were like a dog who just got told they were going bye bye. They are so eager to please, and even though a tractor could do the job faster, it makes them so happy to see their owners happy. It would be abuse not to work these horses, it is no different then when you throw ball with your dog, it is something they love doing, trust me, if they didn't want to do it, they won't, and there is NOTHING you can do to make a 1500LB + animal do if he didn't want to, they are not a poodle, and they will let you know when they have had enough.

Lauren B, these horses are bred to work and pull like sled dogs are bred to pull sleds and Border Collies to herd sheep. You deny them of doing so and you'll end up with unhappy and nervous animals with behavior problems. I've seen it happen too often in dogs, unfortunately.
This is not animal abuse, these beautiful animals LOVE to pull, they were bred for just that. Years back when they had to pull all day everyday it was a different story but now these horses are pretty pampered and well taken care of. The only sad horses are the ones left in the stalls while they watch their siblings pulling! 😃👍

BEAUTIFUL STRONG NOBLE ANIMAL!... Her owner/teamster obviously loves and cares well for her and she seems to love her job!. Never a whip no yelling/screaming at her. Not even usually a bridle just a halter and a line. Also at the end of her pulls she is shown by him that she has done well. Yes she works hard. that is what she is bred for but this animal is obviously loved and well cared for. Her owner each time shows his appreciation for her work. I have a Percheron mare that I have pulled logs out with, she is 17.3 and 2200#. She is very much loved, healthy and slick rides, drives and yes WORKS. Always has a soft mouth with foam, always willing. You cant force that from any animal. I even have competed in lower level dressage with her and she has done well. Judge comments, "soft with a beautiful bend"
What's with all the dislikes? These horses love to pull things and work. They were bred for it over centuries. Plus, Petra is beautiful and still has that long majestic tail.

She has a huge, wide, muscular body and butt with shorter, thick legs and a great attitude. Even though I don't know much about horses or pulling with them, I would think, she should be a great puller. Also, look at the pride she displays at the ribbon ceremony and at times when pulling. Beautiful.
She is a great looking little draft! The only thing I'd worry about is her tail is loose and not braided up, could get caught in the traces while she works.

There's a big difference in watching an animal work that wants to work and has full trust in the person working with them vs one that has been forced. This animal wants to work, enjoys it. First part of the video he is holding her back from pulling harder a number of times.
My grandfather used to do this for a living back in the 1930's - 40's I guess. They used to drag the cut trees down the hill to the train using a windlass like at the start of the video. The ones they used had a steel plate that went on the front of the log so it didn't dig in.
She needs a bigger collar and that shank bit could be replaced with a snaffle but other than that I see nothing wrong with this. This is what draft horses were bred for, to do farm work and logging. Saying that this is cruel is like saying it's cruel to do husky dog sled races in the arctic! She's obviously well fed and seems to be treated well. Considering the abuse that goes on in other equine sports I'm surprised to see so many people screaming 'abuse' here, racehorses, big lick Tennessee Walkers and rodeo horses go through actual abuse, whereas this mare seems willing, alert and happy to be doing this job. She doesn't have that beaten down fearful expression I have seen way to many times on some competition horses of all kinds.

They have light snaffle bits, well padded saddle pads, comfortable saddles, and are given the best that I can offer. Just this mare is doing hard work doesn't mean she is in pain. Most horses you'll know are stressed out will have the whites of their eyes showing, sweat heavily forming along the chests, shoulders, and down their flanks. they will be chomping heavily as well at the bit and nostrils flared. This mare? She's fine and she loves her life.

They don't have 'fun', they don't have TV or video games, they literally just stand around in a pen all day doing nothing except eating. In the wild they would be constantly on the move covering many miles a day to find food and water. Heh, I have a draft, she is 3yo... possibly it is due to youth or she is in the "not most horses" category, but she is quiet a stupid thing, more like a dog than horse. She over-reacts to daily things, though she's getting better. Funniest thing she's done is take a turn too hard when goofing around in her paddock, and instead of balancing herself she rolled over and got up to keep trotting.
Draft horses have to be calm. You have have something that massive and powerful that acts like a ninny. Most of them do get perky and prancy when they know they are going to get to show off and pull something, but other than that, they are zen.
The world record for most weight pulled by a single horse was 3600 pounds. That's barely under 2 tons. Are you trying to tell me this horse has the power to pull 10000 pounds? Stop lying out of your ass.

I love horses, we had 2 if these for over 15 years. Best times of my childhood. They were very strong and smart. Dude, these are such a lovely creatures, they are so loyal to your family, they can get depressed if given to someone.

Mark you are correct. There is much animal cruelty and suffering in the world and in the web to see. This was not that. That mare put her heart and sole into pulling and knew when she did well!! I watched this and thought wow, what a horse and what a team they made. His verbal cues for left, right, stop, go, back etc were calm and steady, it was amazing. Just voice. People find it hard to understand how much animals love to work sometimes because people have become inherantly lazy. My dogs will chase rabbits around the paddocks until they can hardly breathe. Like crazed maniacs!! I dont make them. My horses sometimes gallop around the paddock for fun until they are heaving and dripping in sweat. They love it too. Havent you ever watched a dog run and run, flat out and thought.... wish i was that motivated!?! Some animals enjoy pushing themselves. Some dont. That mare went full throttle at a simple one word command. She wasnt threatened or scared. She was in fantastic condition. Clearly very well cared for. In return for that she does a few meters pulling then got to rest and recover. Its in her genes to pull the way a husky loves to pull a sled. No different. Except her power was a sight to behold. She would even stop and look back for her pat at the end. And yes the slap was a pat. And that horse knows it. My big dogs love a pat like that. They get excited and push each other out the way for a good thumping pat. Have another look. You cant make an animal try that hard, just by saying a few words.
While I don't think this horse is being abused, I don't agree with the phrase "If a horse doesn't want to do it, it won't". You're thinking mules. Horses are the only animal in the world that you can force to run itself to death, I've seen riders force their horses to do something they clearly didn't want to do but the horses were afraid to protest because they would be "corrected" somehow. My horse hates to jump, but I witnessed his old owner forcefully kick him over a jump that he didn't want to go over. You can easily make a horse do whatever you want it to do, all you have to do is kick and whip it hard enough. That's much worse than putting a horse in a field and letting it get fat.

Horses are only meant to carry 20% of there body weight, even if it is a big horse. This can do severe damage to a horse's spine and more. I would hate to do this to any animal. My Opa had a Nederlands Terkpaard or a Dutch Draft in English, he was a beast of a thing, huge not just in height but in muscle and weight. He loved working, but when he didn't he got fussy. You would try to take him out for a walk and he wouldn't budge, make him change stables and he would just stand there, looking at you, but if you got out his work harness, well then you had one happy horse. He lived happily until 3 years ago when he hurt himself due to old age so my Opa retired him and he passed away just last year, 31 years of age. His name was Sterk which is Dutch for Strong.

She has the strongest concentration I have ever seen! most horse pull, give a little and need a little push to get going again. all she needs is the go-ahead, and she is through it with very obvious determination. WOW. most amazing horse I have seen.

Petra does know her strength and that she has the ability to stop when she wants, but doesn't because she ENJOYS HER WORK. She's well fed, well cared for, and looks like a fit and healthy draft.

Most trick horses are trained through proper horsemanship, not out of fear. Making a horse do intricate tricks without their consent is actually a lot harder than earning their partnership in the act, and people tend to do things the easy way.
She is happy to work and totaly relaxed, look at the ears flopping while pulling. What a lovely horse.

Looks like Petra knows her work! Such a good made. I'm really glad the guy doesn't use a whip to "encourage" her like most people would. Instead he uses his reins to encourage her with certain movements, like shaking/trembling them. The even wiser move being he uses his voice over all of that.
Petra doesn't seem very uncomfortable, her ears are neutral despite the flopping of them. Her body displays only the pulling stress and she doesn't appear to want to get away from her trainer let alone the logs.
Seems like Petra thinks it's just another day on the job. Way to go Petraa!
In competition it is illegal to use anything but your voice to ask the draft horse to pull. You can't even slap the reins. Petra just loves to pull. I love how she turns left and right at a call.

I love how you can tell the horse knows it's doing a good job. When you've been around horses for so long you learn that they love to fulfill jobs, if she didn't it, she would show it, she enjoys what she does cause she's made for it and is fulfilling her instincts

Crazy Horse That's just a saying. An average horse has about 15hp. A draft horse is much more powerful since its bred to haul shit ton of weight. And this specific horse looks pretty much on steroids. So its gotta be at least 20hp.

What a beautiful working relationship this man and horse have! At first I wasn't crazy about the chain being used as a girth, but then considered that with the amount of strain being put on it, perhaps its to make sure nothing breaks, which could definitely cause her injury. Its obvious that he is very proud of her,she looks very well taken care of. She even looks proud of herself!

Just love all the people who know nothing about draft horses call this cruel. These horses love to do this kind of work. Petra is obviously very well trained and taken care of. She weighs well over a ton so believe me if she didn't feel like moving she wouldn't.
I agree. There's no way that you're getting that horse to move against its will short of whipping it (which i hope they wouldnt do).
I mean, that's like with police dogs. You usually see them happy when they're on-duty. While it's not carrying loads, it's a physical and dangerous work, yet no one's forcing them to do it. Must be said that this only works with fully domesticated animals. Cats would be much trickier to handle, even though I recall stories of cats in palliative care who appeared to work with humans just fine without running all over the place causing trouble.

I love how some morons in here seem to think that this is abuse. As someone who has used horses for pulling, plowing, logging etc, I can tell you that these guys LOVE being worked. Everytime I would go to the stable to hook them up, they were like a dog who just got told they were going bye bye. They are so eager to please, and even though a tractor could do the job faster, it makes them so happy to see their owners happy.
It would be abuse not to work these horses, it is no different then when you throw ball with your dog, it is something they love doing, trust me, if they didn't want to do it, they won't, and there is NOTHING you can do to make a 1500LB + animal do if he didn't want to, they are not a poodle, and they will let you know when they have had enough.

Lauren B, these horses are bred to work and pull like sled dogs are bred to pull sleds and Border Collies to herd sheep. You deny them of doing so and you'll end up with unhappy and nervous animals with behavior problems. I've seen it happen too often in dogs, unfortunately.

This is not animal abuse, these beautiful animals LOVE to pull, they were bred for just that. Years back when they had to pull all day everyday it was a different story but now these horses are pretty pampered and well taken care of. The only sad horses are the ones left in the stalls while they watch their siblings pulling! 😃👍

BEAUTIFUL STRONG NOBLE ANIMAL!... Her owner/teamster obviously loves and cares well for her and she seems to love her job!. Never a whip no yelling/screaming at her. Not even usually a bridle just a halter and a line. Also at the end of her pulls she is shown by him that she has done well. Yes she works hard. that is what she is bred for but this animal is obviously loved and well cared for. Her owner each time shows his appreciation for her work.
I have a Percheron mare that I have pulled logs out with, she is 17.3 and 2200#. She is very much loved, healthy and slick rides, drives and yes WORKS. Always has a soft mouth with foam, always willing. You cant force that from any animal.
I even have competed in lower level dressage with her and she has done well. Judge comments, "soft with a beautiful bend"

She has a huge, wide, muscular body and butt with shorter, thick legs and a great attitude. Even though I don't know much about horses or pulling with them, I would think, she should be a great puller. Also, look at the pride she displays at the ribbon ceremony and at times when pulling. Beautiful.
She is a great looking little draft! The only thing I'd worry about is her tail is loose and not braided up, could get caught in the traces while she works.

@@marissamunch5169 obvious you haven't dealt with animals. There's a big difference in watching an animal work that wants to work and has full trust in the person working with them vs one that has been forced.
This animal wants to work, enjoys it. First part of the video he is holding her back from pulling harder a number of times.
My grandfather used to do this for a living back in the 1930's - 40's I guess. They used to drag the cut trees down the hill to the train using a windlass like at the start of the video. The ones they used had a steel plate that went on the front of the log so it didn't dig in.

She needs a bigger collar and that shank bit could be replaced with a snaffle but other than that I see nothing wrong with this. This is what draft horses were bred for, to do farm work and logging. Saying that this is cruel is like saying it's cruel to do husky dog sled races in the arctic! She's obviously well fed and seems to be treated well. Considering the abuse that goes on in other equine sports I'm surprised to see so many people screaming 'abuse' here, racehorses, big lick Tennessee Walkers and rodeo horses go through actual abuse, whereas this mare seems willing, alert and happy to be doing this job. She doesn't have that beaten down fearful expression I have seen way to many times on some competition horses of all kinds.

This horse loves her job! You can tell by her temperament, placement of her ears, her reaction to her owners, and how she throws herself into the collar and pulls as hard as she can. Horses are kept both as pets and for a purpose, as mine are. Like dogs, horses love having a purpose and reason for doing things. My horses are steady working farm horses, as well as therapy animals. They have light snaffle bits, well padded saddle pads, comfortable saddles, and are given the best that I can offer. Just this mare is doing hard work doesn't mean she is in pain. Most horses you'll know are stressed out will have the whites of their eyes showing, sweat heavily forming along the chests, shoulders, and down their flanks. they will be chomping heavily as well at the bit and nostrils flared. This mare? She's fine and she loves her life.

They don't have 'fun', they don't have TV or video games, they literally just stand around in a pen all day doing nothing except eating. In the wild they would be constantly on the move covering many miles a day to find food and water. Heh, I have a draft, she is 3yo... possibly it is due to youth or she is in the "not most horses" category, but she is quiet a stupid thing, more like a dog than horse. She over-reacts to daily things, though she's getting better. Funniest thing she's done is take a turn too hard when goofing around in her paddock, and instead of balancing herself she rolled over and got up to keep trotting.
Draft horses have to be calm. You have have something that massive and powerful that acts like a ninny. Most of them do get perky and prancy when they know they are going to get to show off and pull something, but other than that, they are zen.

And even it u whip the horse, it is more likely to not do as it is told. If the horse didn't like what is was doing it would have its ears pinned back, it would be bucking out, and would refuse. Mark you are correct. There is much animal cruelty and suffering in the world and in the web to see. This was not that. That mare put her heart and sole into pulling and knew when she did well!! I watched this and thought wow, what a horse and what a team they made. His verbal cues for left, right, stop, go, back etc were calm and steady, it was amazing. Just voice. People find it hard to understand how much animals love to work sometimes because people have become inherantly lazy. My dogs will chase rabbits around the paddocks until they can hardly breathe. Like crazed maniacs!! I dont make them. My horses sometimes gallop around the paddock for fun until they are heaving and dripping in sweat. They love it too. Havent you ever watched a dog run and run, flat out and thought.... wish i was that motivated!?! Some animals enjoy pushing themselves. Some dont. That mare went full throttle at a simple one word command. She wasnt threatened or scared. She was in fantastic condition. Clearly very well cared for. In return for that she does a few meters pulling then got to rest and recover. Its in her genes to pull the way a husky loves to pull a sled. No different. Except her power was a sight to behold. She would even stop and look back for her pat at the end. And yes the slap was a pat. And that horse knows it. My big dogs love a pat like that. They get excited and push each other out the way for a good thumping pat. Have another look. You cant make an animal try that hard, just by saying a few words.
While I don't think this horse is being abused, I don't agree with the phrase "If a horse doesn't want to do it, it won't". You're thinking mules. Horses are the only animal in the world that you can force to run itself to death, I've seen riders force their horses to do something they clearly didn't want to do but the horses were afraid to protest because they would be "corrected" somehow. My horse hates to jump, but I witnessed his old owner forcefully kick him over a jump that he didn't want to go over.
You can easily make a horse do whatever you want it to do, all you have to do is kick and whip it hard enough. That's much worse than putting a horse in a field and letting it get fat.

The one thing i could see that would force a horse into doing anything would be for food. But you arent gonna make this monster do anything it doesnt want. These anti-everything people don’t realize that horses were not pets.
Horses are only meant to carry 20% of there body weight, even if it is a big horse. This can do severe damage to a horse's spine and more. I would hate to do this to any animal. These people who say it is abuse aren't freaking out they are taking a horse's pain into consideration. JUST BECAUSE IT IS TRADITION DOES NOT MAKE IT OK!

@@jada1760 well... she's not carrying it. Pulling things can actually be beneficial to a horses back although I don't know to what weight point that applies. Might not be true for such heavy loads. But still.

my grandpa had some Belgiums, the American creation. These are much stockier built. But powerful and beautiful, these animals live to work. I so loved watching grandpa working with his horses.

of course she does. she could very easily kill all of them, you can see how powerful she is, but she chooses not to. none of the people are whipping her, therefore they are not forcing her. she shows no signs of trying to resist. of course, if she did show signs of resisting i would not be happy with this video, but she does seem healthy and happy.
