Franzen wrote about his friendship with Bill Vollmann in his book of essays "The End of the End of the Earth." As he revealed how unworthy he felt about Bill's interest in him I thought how humble and human Jonathan actually is -- someone who would be a pretty good friend to have, a smart guy to share a decent conversation. Then again... who is this person Jonathan Franzen? We can never really know people who write their way through life.

What is your point at the end supposed to be? Why would getting to know a writer differ from getting to know the postman?
People don't work all day. You can have coffee with them after hours.

Some good pre-social media comments on privacy a bit before the 10 minute mark. How to act in public - how to be alone.

if you listen closely, you can hear Charlie constantly muttering to one of the interns, "Wow, you're pretty enough to be a model."
