The unthinkable outlines are visible in the future mist, that morality not money must rule us. Kindness and empathy makes for success. Obsession with profits makes for disaster. If we value one another, it is beneficial for all the non-psychopaths (90-99%). Materialism is a mental illness which might be better treated as such rather than empowered.

His beef with Audubon should have been more directly stated as their apathetic stance on wind turbines. They kill a lot more than birds, and their scenic legacy is already evil.
I'm interested to learn if the guy who interrupted and said that Franzen's sentiments were unfair is the same guy who walked out the door a few seconds later. Hilarious.

It's merely to say that the whole idea of living forever doesn't pass the most rudimentary moral examination. You have to think that the tech billionaire who's deciding to put a hundred or two hundred million dollars into investigating the possibility of living forever is either unbelievably morally stupid, or worse... like, the worst kind of asshole, imagining that, "well, other people have to die, but I don't have to die", and that's kind of the definition of an asshole.

As far as morality, religion has no lock on that. We had to get rid of slavery from the bible in our own country during the civil war.

With tipping points now breached, the confluence of factors acting exponentially will cause massive loss of habitat, which for humans means food, water, and housing. The loss of habitat will bring about our rapid extinction. Talking about 2050 and 2100 are ridiculous abstractions at this point. The extinction of the human race is now accelerating through loss of habitat and food/water security and this is caused by anthropogenic climate change. All the tech in the world will not save the human race. It is too late. Yes, we should make every effort to mitigate and save as much life as possible. However, the thing to do now is to grappled with your own mortality, adjust yourself to this horrendous reality, and prepare yourself so you can die in a way and time of your own choosing. Climate change is now a runaway freight train that cannot be stopped. The Titanic ignored the warnings and now the ship has already hit the ice berg and is sinking. Yet people remain in denial. Humanity is and will go extinct within years...2-3 perhaps...maybe 5. Definitely within the next decade. Perhaps even this year. Once loss of habitat becomes pronounced, extinction always quickly follows. Look at history.
Odd that your frame habitat loss as a problem affecting humans, when people are grabbing it from other species. Many of us got depressed when "environmentalists" became the biggest sprawl developers on the planet. Industrial wind power is futile hypocrisy on many levels, starting with its complete dependence on fossil fuels. Green math-flunkers think wind power can somehow supplant its very maker.
Now Jaron Lanier doesn't even buy into this "Dopey Utopianism".

the word infinite is not anything more than a large number, it doesn't mean forever. and a god doesn't mean anything, there are so many which one do you have in mind. Nothing also is a concept philosophical in nature and not in science. and then, of course, you have the argument that there is a creator which presents even more problems in that what created the creator. You should try going back to school and learn about the things we already know and then maybe you wouldn't be hiding under every bush and tree.
