Fallkniven A1: Wilderness Calling

  • It's strong, Sweedish, and laminated. The capable Fallkniven A1 is one of my top mid sized survival knife picks, especially when things get wet and stay wet. While I am a big fan of the high value carbon steel survival knives, they aren't right for every situation and I have found that in high moisture/salt/precip environs their blades will rust faster than you can care for them. Some high tech coatings can help this propensity quite a bit(DuraCoat, baked-on Dow Corning "MolyCote 3400A") but that relief and cutting edge will always be exposed (and coatings can wear off). That's where the Fallkniven laminated VG10 stainless steel blades come into their own. The 13 .4 ounce (370 grams) A1 can surprise you with its capabilities too Credit its .24 (6mm) thick clip blade which is seen in few other factory produced stainless survival blades. This thick blade gives the A1 outstanding swing and heft. It achieved impressive wood chopping and splitting capabilities beyond its mid-size category in TNP testing. While the A1 could serve is a variety of wilderness roles (like LBE combat blade), its true calling is in the wilderness and Fallkniven accurately identifies and substantiates this use in their literature. Like some other Fallkniven blades, the A1 Fallkniven says it has passed some arduous bending/breakage tests (data shown) which substantiates the laminated steel concept. This composite blade features a VG10 steel core sandwiched between 420J2 exterior layers. This makes the knife more rust and breakage resistant while giving the owner the outstanding edging capabilities of the proven VG10 choice. Note however that these laminated Fallknivens will nick/chip when they come in contact with the pebble-ridden ground (been there, done it). Such contact I find is almost inevitable in bushcrafting so you can just expect it and either live with it or sharpen it out afterwards. But the benefits of rust resistance and higher edge holding make the compromise worthwhile. The clip blade features a mid-spine grind that allows the spine to have full thickness for maximum strength (but I still prefer the full flat grinds). The A1 like its A2 bigger brother (reviewed by me in 2008) has the somewhat short Kraton handle which rides on the this slab (read full tang) of laminated steel. It is comfortable and will be durable for most adventurers. The Zytel sheath is my favorite: it is light, tough, drains nicely, fits snugly, has a good retention strap, and fits the survival POU well. A lanyard hold is provided. All this capability in a 13.4 oz knife isn't exactly cheap and prices seem to go up every few years unfortunately. As of 2010 expect about $155 US for the satin version, about $180 US for the blackened CeraCoat 8H version (which does wear off with use). But it's worth it and is an all star performer when the rain and snow falls but you still find yourself in need of a woods serious blade. ///////////////////// Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 9 out of 10 (price considered) /////////////// Music: www.torley.com

Hi from London,UK. Love all your vids, reviews and knowledge bro. I've got to agree with re Fallkniven knives. Absolutely superb, simple, beautiful design and quality manufacture. I own many knives, Esee 4&5, Sog, Cold Steel etc but the knives I love the most and 'connect' with the most are Fallkniven!! Got the F1 and S1 and about to get the A1 just cant decide on black or satin!! Yes Fallkniven are more common this side of the pond but I would say, buck for buck the Fallkniven range is worth every penny and I prefer them to most handmade custom blades I've used. Stunning knives and quality and performance wrapped up in a beautifully simple perfect design. I would also add I think the A1 is possibly the best 'all rounder' survival knife in the world and a perfect design, size and weight!!

@madogblue Maybe I need to ask another question. Have you ever been backpacking in the a completely snowed out area?
From my experience dead trees either large standing or not the twigs are SOAKED and twigs are a pretty poor way to start a fire in a wind. Its always better to quarter up a few sawed pieces then cut those down to kindling.

In Sweden we have a saying: "ju mindre kniv, ju större jägare" it roughly translates to "the smaller knife, the bigger ranger". It basically comes down to that when have a small knife culture in sweden. Most people use Moras, or fällkniven F1´s. Most people in the military use S1's or F1's. I served in the northern most Regiment in sweden, just south of the polar circle. And if you have an A1 in your belt, most officers and soldiers will laugh at you. And these guys are pretty much arctic survival masters, we have units from militaries all over Europe that come to learn arctic survival. I carry a S1 in the woods and in the fjäll (mountains).

    • @death299
      @death299 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

+Joel Källberg no one said that you can't do larger tasks with a smaller knife
but in all settings it's a compromise between work needed for large and small tasks and weight carried
a survival knife is meant as an all around tool
from processing wood to being used as a weapon including being used a spear if that need arises
the F1 is a pilot tool not a real woodsman/all around one
in either case both the S1 and the A1 have been tested to meet the requirements of both the Swedish and U.S militaries
only an idiot gives a damn about what knife is being used as long as it does the job it needs to do. and only a complete moron would judge someone by the knife on their hip when it'll perform the task needed
(some people are vastly more comfortable for various reasons with bigger knives..other with smaller ones..and just like a rifle a knife that feels like shit in your hand isn't going to be worth taking)

Hi nutnfancy. First, id like to thank you for this review and the whole project. I just got my a1 and its just awesomly thick chunk of steel. I am going to take it outside soon and comment again, but so far I believe every word you say. Its basicaly a razor sharp knife/axe. I can see that survival POU. Its razor sharp and just by feeling it in my hand i see that its an outstanding chopper and spliter and in my area, i am not likely to split logs as thick as you do, so its long enough for me.

Who would argue that battoning a little blade is worthwhile? I carry a small mora blade but also a folding saw and hatchet. That's not a bad combined weight and is very capable. That system is great for spitting, crosscutting, and fine work that a big blade cannot do.

I originally wanted the Fallkniven A1 but decided to go with the S1 based on size. I'm in the pacific northwest and the hunting and photography that I do takes me through a lot of mountainous, steep terrain. I like having a knife that is within quick reach and doesn't impede my movement at all. Just got back from a trip out with the S1. I like it. I abused it on some oak wood chopping, hacking and shredding with it. It retained sharpness very well. The tip is thick. I can only imagine the A1.

I did a winter survival training weekend in the Alberta foothills, -25 C, deep snow cover. I didn't have snow shoes which should (famous last words) have been no big deal, the trail had been packed down. I had an Esee6 on a thigh rig, last km I broke through every third step, seems the trail wasn't rated for my 210lbs+40lbs of gear, lol. Snow as high as my waist, was brutal, my knife was caked in snow, already rusting the next day. Esee6 is great for dry weather but I just ordered the A1.

Hi, yes the "fallkniven A1" it not that cheap, but just so you know, in Sweden it retails for 2280 Swedish crowns = approx $ 318 - And its made in Sweden! I live in Stockholm, and thinking about puchasing the Fallkniven S1, but when i do, I´ll order it from yourcornerstore in the US, even with shipping & handling AND taxes thru Swedish customs, i still save $ 76 !!! Nut´n keep it up man, You´re the best there is when it comes to genuine gear reviews !!

The steel is made in Japan. And I'm not saying it, it's the founder and owner of Fallkniven, Peter Hjoertberger who said it. He explained on Knifeforums that they are having it made in Japan not to reduce costs, but because they couldn't find anyone else capable of making this steel according to their specs.

@MrBigmilk2003 Forged knives are mainly done from High Carbon steels such as 1095 and are heat treated differentially (the edge is hard and the spine is soft) - that's why they are so strong.

The guys who will use those smaller knives as a "survival knife" are normally bushcrafters. They will also have an axe and say with them to handle the chopping sawing. They can bring this becasue I suppose you could call them minimalist to some extent. They make what they need rather than bring it so they only carry maybe 15-20 pounds of other gear. I happen to kind of in this group although I love my big blades because of the advantages you always point out. Like you say, diffferent strokes.

Hey, grrrreat video, buddy. ExTREMELY high production value and highly informative. Best I've seen from you yet. As for the A1, I have a solid VG10 version which I haven't used all that much yet. GREAT feel in hand, great balance, and just about the only thing I miss on it is the lack of a choil. For me 5-inch blades are perfect. It is, to me even a bot big. What I do is scouting, bushcraft and also I work in the woods summertime.
This is in southern Sweden so i use mora-knives, axes and saws, this since i think the bigger knives gives too little control. I think the thickness is the more important part and fällkniven which I like alot.

It's a REALLY sweet knife, I was very impressed and I'm a knife guy, (EDC's are Spyderco Military Digi/Black blade and Paramilitary 2 in the same color scheme) and I own several Fallknivens, Leatherman's, Cold Steel, etc. You can always get an Izula ($50) or F1 ($80 at canteenshop) for small slicing tasks.

@PitaD123ABC I own both, it depends on your environment. They're the two best survival knives period. Most of my adventures/climbing/mountaineering/4x4ing is in deserts (Mojave, Death Vally, Moab, Grand Canyon), so the ESEE 5 is the better choice. I use the A1 for wet environments. The ESEE is an awesome chopper, you can choke back using pinkey lanyard and it becomes an 8.5" 16oz blade. It's also stronger, especially in really cold weather, but the A1 is designed for Swedish winters...

well i have to say that i've mostly watched your gun reviews and tactical clinic vids, but i decided to watch this knife review and i gotta say... i kinda did get into the spirit of the blade there a bit watching it and will def start checking out some of your other knife reviews, don't know so much about the "emotional attachment" aspect lol i do get what you are saying though i think that the majority of us that watch your vids very much appreciate them and all that you do thank you

Mr. nutnfancy, you're one of the few reputable online reviewers and I go to your archives for well formed opinions on the products I plan to employ in the great outdoors. pretty new to the game but I too want to be a good dad and enjoy taking my sons out to the everglades on extended mock survival trips. thanks for all the vids.

Yup, and because of your video the Fallkniven A-1 is my 2nd favorite knife (6"), also because of your review the Vox Rold has a high standing too, and your brief mention the Vox 2011 Collection found a home in my 6" stable, I'm sure there might be better knives than my favorite #1, but maybe I can't afford them or I haven't found one yet. Mors Kochanski suggested a strong knife for a bush knife, and I agree and to beable to on person carry I too am leaning to a 6" blade, although I have no problem carrying a 7 1/2" or a 9 1/2" knife it depends what I'm doing on my trips, but I found a diamond in the rough, I almost have a complete line of the newer Swamp Rat Knives except for the Hawks because I went traditional like my 2Hawks Warbeast and my Trapper Double Bit Hatchet, don't get me wrong I love my G.B. Small Forest Axe. Anyhow I didn't like the tactical look of their 6" blade so I had their Custom Shop modify the Rodent 6 which I had thinned down and the top gaurd taken off and now it look's like a beefy Ratmandu on steriods, it came out awesome, and you could hardly tell it was a Rodent 6, now because I had it thinned down its a better slicer, and the area where they took the top gaurd off it allows my hand more freedom to chop, actually it chop's as good as some of my larger knives because of its robust weight, but it's not all that heavy and therefore it's my favorite field camp bush knife, but no question in my mind the A-1 is a awesome knife on its own, after all the military uses it and your pretty good about reviewing knives that if you recommend a knife your usually right on, Thanx for your suggestions NutN.

The word Fällkniven sounds like the words Fell-elk-knee-ven (Raven without Ra) put together to "FellKneeven". Fällkniven means folding knife (or actually "the folding knife"). Great job on the review, greetings to both of you nut and Veri. :)

I've been watching some of your videos for quite a while and i'm happy to say that today, i subscribed. Really like the way you look a knives and the kind of person you are. Say, is the Falkniven A1 and F1 a good combo? Being the A1 more targeted to choping (if needed), splitting, and brutal chores and the F1 for treating game (if i dont have my leatherman on me), small jobs like feathersticks, preparing fire, and general needes on camp. Ty!
