  • What is the best media for your koi pond bakki shower filter? In this video I hope to answer that question and more. This is the second video in the DIY bakki shower build series and the third bakki shower video in total with the first covering all aspects of bakki shower development, construction and principles of operation plus much more.
    For this video I have researched over 40 different medias and narrowed them down to one very low budget option and 4 (all essentially the same product) best all round options. I have also negotiated a great discount off one of the top picks which you can claim using the code in the video.
    Cost, performance and durability are all considered.

    The discount still applies. Aqua source was around £10 cheaper than the shops. They also have loads of other pond related items on their web site. Worth giving a call! Postage is a few £ and next day!

    Great video again. Glad you didn't rule out pumice completely. I've had mine running for over a year with no degradation to the media. Mind you mine probable does run more like a trickle filter. I will be interested in seeing a full review of that media you are going to use. I've heard some negative stuff about it's strength but I'm keen to get your view on it. I would trust your opinion with it.

      Hi Jim, I didn't mention in the video but I found out there are a couple of different types of pumice and its a bit of a lottery as to which one you get. You're not the first to say it has lasted well and there are others who say it has eroded quite quickly so I'm guessing its the difference between one type of pumice and the other. I couldn't find a way to differentiate or guarantee you got the better one so I had to go worst case but even so I think its a great option 👍👍

There is no replacement for BHM it's simply better then everyone else... but costly I rather spend on a koi Lol.. great video thanks again.

      I made a tower filter last year out of 3 dog baths ( don’t laugh) . Bottom 2 have 50 kg of pumice top one got alfagrog. Well did have. Emptied and clean this week and tbh I was surprised how clean it was. Anyway my Kano came at 4 on Wednesday so 3 boxes approx went straight in top tier. Question is. What will be best mix. I can mix each tier with both pumice and Kano or Kano in centre of each tier surrounded by pumice. Pumice in bottom. Mix in middle and just Kano in top. I said tower as not sure if it’s true shower as I have a oase 6000 pump going over it. Each tier is 80 litre but I not filled them. Question 2 is. Will it be better to bin the 3 80 litre tubs and go smaller for the pump size for more flow. I got 8 boxes of Kano to play with 🙈. Thanks for any replies of anyone with advice

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Graeme, I don't think it matters hugely where you put them but if it where me I would put the Kano in a position where it gets water smashing against it with mechanical waste in so probably the top tray. The kano will deal with solids better than pumice so you want to take advantage of that. Don't bury it.
      Yes I think you will benefit from concentrating the flow down over a narrow area to compensate for the reletively small flow. I'm flowing 5500 litres per hour over mine and my shower is 4 tiers and only 30cm wide (40cm deep).

    • @graemejohnson2388
      @graemejohnson2388 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wanted to get it in ASAP so got the Kano in top 2 boxes and pumice in bottom. Happy with it atm and be doing twice weekly water tests. 3/4 of pumice I had in is still in so swapping the Alfa grog for 6 boxes of Kano has got to be a improvement.

    Excellent video. I purchased Mountain tree lotus root last summer. However, it's not used in a shower, but in a sump before a waterfall so its submerged. It was only after I purchased it that I found out about the deterioration issues. Having said that, I am hoping that it won't fall apart so quickly being submerged, with the flow of water travelling from below upwards. So there will be no real impact of water hitting it as such, just a current of water flowing through it and around the spirals. That's how I hope it works out anyway -time will tell! Anyway, great video and keep them coming.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, yes I'm sure it will be fine in your situation. It does look like a great media in terms of surface area and pores etc so I think it will perform really well. It would be interesting to hear if you find it handles nitrate in that configuration to 👍👍🍻🍻

    • @Veterankoi
      @Veterankoi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DazzleKoi It replaced alphagrog that was being used specifically to clean up nitrates. Alphagrog has many pores but it blocks up very quickly. I looked at momotaro BHM but ruled it out due to cost. I saw mountain tree lotus root which was ‘cheaper’ so went for it. It’s still not the cheapest, so when I started seeing reports it disintegrated after 2 years I did get concerned. The water quality since I put it in has been superb, O am just hoping it doesn’t fall to bits🙁

    Another video that helps all of us Koi hobbyists make better informed decisions 👍. I have a media that i use in my American Cichlid tank. Lava rock @ £3.99 a kilo. Very lightweight due to it better constructed of holes really. Have you ever used this?

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gary, I haven't used lava rock, no. I did look in to it when I researched for this video but it was difficult to find any conclusive evidence one way or the other. I believe it to be similar to pumice but less porous. It seemed that it is used more in America than here in the Uk and more in the past than it is today.
      Although it is a different product I kind of classed it similar to alfa grog to be honest. It will give some benefit, but for just a little bit more outlay there are many many options that give benefit gains that far out weigh the cost difference.

    Spot on videos mate glad to see you pointing out what a bakki shower is as there are loads of people that say they have a bakki but it's really a trickle tower. I use BHM am sure sakura, csm and the aquasource media is exactly the same thing from the same manufacturer. Was interested where you got the info on crystal bio and ph as I have some bagged up in a bio chamber. And my ph in my pond is higher than the source water. Looking forward to the build video mate

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Phil, yes I think I'm right in saying that out of the 4 I recommend there is only actually 2 different types.
      The crystal bio info all mentions the pH increase but they cleverly say that it 'prevents pH crashes' or that it provides s a pH buffer rather than just straight out that it increases pH. Basically it has a pH of close to or just slightly over 8 so it pushes your water up to that level, similar to using oyster shells etc

    I'm a little put out why lava rock hasn't been mentioned.
    It's one of the cheapest medias around. Plus doesn't clog in showers if used after mechanical filtration.
    As you are making a DIY shower filter. The four you recommend are very expensive for DIY. If you can afford the top four you should be able to buy a factory made filter shower.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andy, I'm not sure what you mean by a 'factory made filter shower' but a proper momotarro bakki shower filled with BHM costs several thousand pounds. Many third parties make what they call shower filters but the vast majority of them are extremely poor. Only 3 tiers, wrong sizes and wrong heights between tiers, wrong media etc. They dont usually work as showers, more like trickle towers.
      I'm trying to recreate a proper shower for minimum spend, not copying the poor copies out there.
      Lava rock is not a good shower media. I essentially classed it with alfa grog as it has similar traits and performance.

  • @simonshears5182

    Marine pure sphere isn't shower media from 🇺🇸 MP and indorsed by BRSTv and when doing marining was the best from range in sump shower but fully submerged .. But the MP2C- c is a great shower media and most cermedia have good nitrate properties and the porosity is 2nd to none and still 20yrs Market Leaders 🤨...... But I do like the Miracle Stone and I'm gonna get small box of that BHM and try to see if i can see Any difference between the MP2C - c and BHM Personally I don't I'll notice much but I'm sure it will contribute to the corse. 👍

Because I know its manufactured as it should be and seen it work for myself I can recommend it from experience whereas the copies I haven't used them and so I have to take the manufacturers word for it.

    i built a shower last year, and fitted it today, just need to buy my media now. so, my question is, what happens in the winter with it ? do you all turn your showers off, and in doing so kill the media and have to start all over again next year, or do you cover them or insulate them and keep it running all year ? how long does it take for it to mature and work ? any input would be appreciated

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, no its never turned off, as you say you would have to start all over again every spring. How long it takes is a tough one as it depends on many variables such as the media you use, the flow, temps, whether you have other bio filtration running, pond volume, fish load, food used and how much etc etc etc. I would suggest banking on 6 to 8 weeks to mature and start taking nitrate out to any significant level but it will vary massively.
      I'm in the uk so cold is not an issue and I don't cover it or anything. You might need to do something if you are in a colder country though.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David, this media would definitely work well in that situation. People call it a bakki river when its configured like that. It isn't as effective as when its showered but it will still do something.
      The big thing you need to watch for is that it doesn't collect debris and become a breeding ground for bacteria. The pores can become blocked to if it isn't getting constantly pounded with water. You would just need to keep an eye on it and clean it if necessary 👍

    • @khunwryxl6978

      Hi David, I have a planter system built into my pond, it is the secondary filter with waterfall back into the pond. I used pea size gravel as the medium (wash thoroughly) and when you put the plants in I would recommend putting the plants in pots as the plants roots will run rampant in the gravel. All soil has to be removed, use the gravel as the pot medium also. I hope this helps.

      Hi Mark, lots of people put foam in the top tier but personally I dont see the point. With the correct flows and correct media a shower will consume some mechanical waste so I prefer to let it do its thing and not have the hassle of cleaning foam etc. I think it slows the water down as well and you lose some of the momentum from the spray bar spraying the water in the top.

      Hi mate, sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away on holiday.
      Yes I've heard of people using BHM in bakki rivers and in submerged systems with good results. In my opinion though it seems a bit of a waste to use such expensive media in a way that it was not designed to run when in theory there are much cheaper options that (again in theory) should work better, such as fluidised K1.
      One thing I don't know is if it would still harbor anaerobic bacteria if it was submerged. For me the biggest advantage to showers with ceramic medias is their ability to remove nitrate through anaerobic bacteria so it would be interesting to see if that still happened when submerged.

      @DazzleKoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate. So something is pushing it up. Do you have any run-off from flags, mortar, bricks etc? pH will fluctuate through the day, lower in the morning, higher at night due to photosynthesis. The crystal bio could push it up a bit more when its new but shouldn't do it long term.
      The only way really to lower it safely is with your tap water. If you dont already I would set up a trickle in trickle out to waste.
      Also, get a second test kit and double check as that is a big increase from your tap water.
      Dont need to panic, pH 9 is ok. Its better to be stable at 9 than to fluctuate around 7-8

      Hi Richard, I've never heard of it before and I can't think of any possibility chemically that sodium thiosulphate could raise pH. I've used it a long time and my pH is never over 7.5.
      Food quality and feed volume can have an impact on pH but it isn't usually so big.
      Beyond that I'm at a loss mate, I can't think of anything else that would push pH up like that.
      I think your best tool for bringing it down is your tap water but I would do one last check on it. Take a glass full out the tap and leave it to stand overnight then test again in the morning. If its still low I would add a trickle in to bring pH down and keep it consistently down.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi mate, no it wont go any higher. It may even come down slightly in your case. It doesn't raise pH necessarily, it changes pH towards the level of the pumice itself. So if your pH was 7.5 then it would raise it towards 8 - 8.5 but if your pH is above 8 - 8.5 it will reduce it to that level.
      So basically it shifts pH to the same level as the material. In most cases that means going up but in your case it is already up at that level anyway so it means staying the same or even coming down a bit

    Regarding the Lotus Root, I think this media is not well explained. Due to the high temp during the curing, it becomes a media that needs to be either submerged or in trickle showers, not bakki showers. The force of the bakki shower will make is crumble. It's by having a nice slow though it that the bacteria colonise, it's not really a media that needs water crushing on it. I am in contact now with the Italian reps and the German rep as it's so difficult to get it in England. Queni koi only sells it now with their bakki shower, which doesn't make sense...

    I cannot find any proof that BHM is the best?
    Other cheaper medias which are made from the same gear perform exactly the same.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rob, BHM was developed by a project team in conjunction with the team developing shower filtration so it is designed and manufactured from the ground up to be the perfect media for a shower. Other manufacturers are able to copy exactly it but the manufacturing costs are the same. The material is heated to high temps and held for very long periods of time, during which the internal structure is created.
      Cheaper copies are made cheaper by cutting corners. Usually the temp is not as high or its not held as long, thus reducing the massive energy costs.
      So while it appears the same material and same manufacturing , it isn't, and this is why they don't work as well and they don't have the durability of the original and why, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for.
      I've used the cheaper copies as I can't afford the original but its a compromise.
