Thanks Simon. Had planned to fit a version of the John Huntingford impeder as a winter project but this looked much simpler with less lines to rig plus I already had the parts needed in my spares box. I therefore adapted your design to fit my Wanderer and it's already on the boat. Hope to be lucky enough to try it out next week.

That’s great Tom, I’m glad the video was useful and thanks for watching. Good luck with the new addition to your boat. I use it most often just after setting off from a pontoon or beach. I set the boat on a straight course on a reach and it allows me to go forward and tidy up the things I either forgot to do or just didn’t have time to do. Very useful .

@@sailingskismoAnything to help with the issue of not having enough hands at the critical time is welcome! Watch you videos with interest Simon as we started cruising in a GP14 in 2004 and sailed her in many of the locations you have featured. We then acquired a Bavaria 30ft but having experienced the same disadvantages of owning a yacht that you picked up on in your recent video are now back dinghy cruising in the Wanderer. Still talk about our GP14 adventures every time we are on the water.

Looks good. My only reservation is releasing it in an emergency. Or will your plastic hook bend out if you pull hard? Also, can you put the helm down to heave-to with your impeder?
I've seen it done with velcro on the side deck and on the extension (hooks on one, loops on the other) in which case it's just a case of grabbing the tiller extension. However I wonder how often it would need renewing.
I have recently fitted a Huntingford on my Salterns Wagtail but honestly, I don't like the small amount of friction that is always there even when it is not engaged; there is a loss of feel. May need some tweaking!
Something I do favour is to have a light bungee from the centre line of the floor to the tiller. It needs to rise diagonally, either forwards or backwards, to the end of the tiller where it is hooked on (and can be hooked off). This centres the helm if you let go but applies almost no side force when you are steering normally. It is also great for rowing because the boat will respond to steering with the oars but still tracks straight otherwise.
Thanks for your videos Simon, I just recently found them.
I think we may have passed by one another at Cobnor when you were playing with Cody?

Hey Tom, thanks for watching. The tiller impeder hook does “unhook” instantly in an emergency, I just push it downwards and it releases. You ask about how it may be used to heave to, well, I use an additional bit of wizardry for that 🤓 Rather than try and explain that here, I do believe I covered it in my cruising set-up video. The Huntingford lever I find, certainly on a GP14, to be too rope intensive and I try where I can to keep things simple and to keep the cockpit clear of snagging risks. We may indeed have crossed paths while out sailing with Cody 😉

I just checked my set up video and it appears I’ve not covered the heave-to set up, silly me. I’ll sort that as soon as the weather improves 🤓
