This actually felt like a Beverly Hills Cop movie. Axel is older, for sure, but he hasn’t lost that spark. It was fun, and his chemistry with Bobby was great, especially in the helicopter. 7/10.

@@rogersjgregory I gave it a solid 7 as well. Granted, I may not have liked it as much if it wasn't a Beverly Hills Cop movie, but I think it works because it seems like a natural sequel to those movies with a similar vibe. Maybe I'm looking through rose colored glasses with a touch of nostalgia, but I don't care 😅

The hilarious thing about Joseph Gordon Levit being "the young cop" is that he's 43 years old today!!! He's almost the age of Captain Bogomil in the 1984 movie, he was the veteran cop at age 46. Tagart was 36 in the 1984 movie and Rosewood was like late 20s/early 30s. Eddie was the real young young guy at 22, 23. But everyone is so old now in their 60s and 70s, that a 43 year old is the "young guy cop".

Once he hears she is in trouble he immediately goes to help. The movie portrays her and her mother as kind of unreasonable, but let's not forget about the lying he does to get his way, especially in Beverly Hills Cop 2. What he does to those construction workers is fucked up and just so he doesn't have to pay for a hotel.

Axel F does just that. When I was watching, I felt right at home(figuratively), as though BHC never left. This looooong belated sequel just works despite itself. That's remarkable. You can watch all four movies now and not notice any drastic creative shift. Axel is back baby.

You make an excellent point about the "strained" relationship with his daughter, especially when the movie goes out of its way in the beginning to show that Axel clearly cares about the people in his community. Two other little things that bothered me was that his old car in Detroit looked better than it did in any other movie even though it's now a 60 year old car. And that Detroit letter jacket looked like it was picked off of the rack every morning that he shot with it. Minor details, but they hint at a more polished look that felt more like a movie than the realism of the world they were building.

Great point about Axel and his daughter. The guy who was always loyal and willing to throw his career away for an old criminal friend and cop friend across the country has lost his daughter because he’s too involved in his work.
The problem is that it’s like they don’t actually go back and watch the old movies to make sure they’re getting things right. Are they just going off of their memory which isn’t good?
Example: Coming 2 America they still had the arranged fiancé hopping and barking when she actually left making an Orangutan’s sound. “Eww Eww Eww”.

That being said, this is a really fun movie. It felt like being home again. It was fast paced, nostalgic while fresh, and made good use of the characters. Joseph Gordan Levit was an excellent addition. Kevin Bacon's character could have been more devious (what straight men can spot a pair of designer shoes and knows they cost $2000?). Despite their ages, the original cast stepped up and did their jobs. I am ready for the next movie!

What i love the most about the movie is how all the OG Characters were NOT forced just to be a cameo in the new movie. I think every character shows up, and story continues at a good pace.
There arent any slo mo walking in the room shots with heroic music playing, then they say, "I had a call for some Backup "
Then they die 2 minutes later.
I am so proud and happy that this movie did not have to do that.
Yes, sure, there might be a few seconds to introduce a character, but it didn't feel any longer or drawn out than any other new character intro in any other movie.
This movie respects itself, and it really does it right for a resurrection of a dead franchise.
It feels like it just picks up where it left off, and thats the best Fan service you can ever truely do. and it brings in the new audience .
Fans dont need a wink to the camera, or bringing in a og character just to see them in a pointless cameo appearance.
If they show up, they should be there for the whole ride is what im saying.
Fans want story's in the life of our favorite characters.
Its that simple, true continuation of their life in their world.
And this movie did a great job of this exact thing.
Its not a perfect movie by any means,... but it might be the best sequel that has ever come out. Definitely in recent times of old movies coming back, this is a true sequel!
    Go watch it!!

The sad thing about Hollywood writing is that every movie like this either has estranged kids, or kids who get in over their heads and need Dad's help. It's almost never just them being well adjusted and having a character arc. Almost as annoying as the kid who seems to know everything and stumbles through the film with invulnerable plot armor. How tough would it have been to follow the first film's premise and have his daughter being like Jenny, who just happened to work for some bad people and stumbled in to trouble, needing Axel's help. But looking forward to checking this out. Eddie was on top of the mountain for 3 or 4 years and then couldn't pick a movie that wasn't a complete disaster. Ten years ago I would have picked this movie apart, but because my standards have been drastically reduced in recent years, I actually enjoyed this. I mean, what else is there to watch on netflix?

Have not seen it yet, but the point you make about his relationship with his daughter sort of contradicting his persona is spot on. Good call on that one....impressive !!

I watched axel F immediately after watching the first movie for the first time.
Watching them back to back was really interesting. The new movie definitely has a modern feel to it but axel is still axel even after 40 years.
Sure all the characters from the original movies have gotten much older but axel is still kicking it and hasn’t shown down at all. This ain’t like crystal skull where he’s “getting too old for this shit”, he’s still got the pep in his step.
I also loved how they kept most of the callbacks to the last movies at a minimum and more focused on what axel has been doing since then. He had a family and a kid, and he wants to make amends. It’s sweet and wholesome.
Nothing can replace the original movie, but this was a good continuation of the franchise and I’m glad that I watched it

I haven't seen part 4 yet. In part 3 Taggert was written to have retired. And Rosewood was the captain. I hope they explain why he was, called out of retirement to be the new cap/chief of police. Or are they just going to retcon part 3?

I can't believe he didn't do the Axel Foley laugh. That was a big part of his character.

Having not seen Bad Boys 4 yet (but a huge fan of the first 2 Michael Bay movies), will I like BB4?

I loved it, it did have flaws, but my god it felt like as much like an 80's buddy cop movie as a 2024 sequel can, and Eddie Murphy gave a wonderful performance and feels like he's still Axel. The other cast did amazing too, Taggart felt exactly like you'd expect him to be at that age, Billy was still Billy and is a loveable goofball. Even the new cast did really well in their roles.
Like, modern sequels to old franchizes rarely make it into my "Rewatch" schedule, and Axel F will definitely make it into my rewatch schedule when I go through the Beverhills Cop movies, as far as I'm concerned it stands up with the franchise and at the very least is as good as the second.
Also the Father/Daughter dynamic I actually bought, because from movie 1, Axel has been married to his job, its been his whole life, and for me its not without reason that he would think to send his Daughter/Wife out of Detroit(Cause as he said, its too dangerous and gangs threatened his family), and in doing so, just became estranged over time due to him always being a Detroit Cop and not wanting to leave that life, but also wanting to protect his family and keeping them away from it. Like, theres real life parallels to good people being too married to their job and causing family tension, you can be a good person with good intentions and still end up in a bad situation with your kids when your job come first. Its not a huge stretch for me that their relationship might have ended up this way without him even realizing how bad it was getting.
Not to mention when it comes to divorced parents, the one with full custody can often, accidental or not, can have their bitterness toward the other parent poison the childs mind about them as well. All in all, I bought the dynamic, though I didn't quite enjoy it, I understood it.
The one thing I DID find weird was that, based on this movies recount of Axel's trips to beverly hills, the third movie takes place in 1994(year it was released), and its 2024 in Axel F, yet at one point I swear he says his daughter is "32", which don't add up. Cause that would mean in 1994 during the events of Beverly Hills Cop 3, he already had a 2 year old biological child. That one made my head tilt for a moment.
