  • Since this video was made in April 2023 'The Crooked House' pub has suffered a terrible fate. In the space of four months it has been sold, broken into and vandalised.
    Then, in early August, a devastating fire ripped through it leaving it a burnt out shell.
    Then it was demolished.
    RIP Crooked House. 1765 - 2023. You will be sorely missed.

      It sadly will never be rebuilt as it was. A replica just would not be the tourist draw that this wonderful original was. Looking at it from Google Earth, if this pub hadn't been on the wonk, it would not have been busy with the customers it had due to its location.
      That fella and his wife who bought the pub, putting it in her name, fully intended to destroy it. Why else would they close it down 2 weeks after buying it, during the tourist season? I read the road had been blocked off with mounds of earth leaving it incredibly difficult for emergency vehicles to get through. Adam Taylor, the one with the face like a melted welly owns the rubbish dump or whatever it is next door; Something or other 'environmental' which he has made a LOT of money from. He owns another pub not far away which he bought and started stripping out until he was ordered to stop and now that remains just a shell. He had wanted to turn it into flats. I can't imagine his thoughts for this pub but both Adam (melted welly face) and his very bland wife Carly have lots of questions to answer, one being why did they hire the demolition machine before the fire?

    The recent fire and destruction of this historic landmark is incredibly sad. It really is very fishy that it was sold, piles of dirt appeared on the approach road and a fire started; which gutted the building and all in a matter of weeks. It has now been demolished completely by the new owners. Why wasn't it a listed building which would have given it protection? It reminds me of The Railway Pub, in Wealdstone (NW London) where the Who and many other iconic 1960s bands played. It caught fire one night and hey presto, block of flats were erected in no time by developers.

    • @rubix4195
      @rubix4195 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually, it's been a bit of a scam that's been around since 2015. The most known case is the Carlton Tavern in Maida Vale where in 2015, before it was listed under Historic England, it got demolished since the developers wanted to build a block of flats there. The only problem was the locals never let up and Westminister Council took the developers to court and it ended up with a verdict of an illegal demolition but also the developers had to put it back *brick by brick* The developers appealed, likely advising not possible since no sources to rebuild it brick by brick, except Historic England documented the layout already so they could. Hopefully, the precedent stands since the Carlton Tavern was 100 years old - the Crooked House is 200 years old so they should be forced to bring it back brick by brick.

    Probably the most well known pub in the UK and some scumbag developer buys it and it miraculously burns down after the drive was blocked ( almost as if to stop Fire Engine access ) The main brickwork was still standing and amid discussions on rebuilding it the demolition crew quickly moved in to finish the job. As it was a set to become a listed building somebody should be going to Jail but we all know that won't happen.
    As a minimum, any planning permissions should never be granted

    • @rubix4195
      @rubix4195 ปีที่แล้ว

      No planning permissions were granted; the likelihood - based on what I have read - it was too much to maintain for the new owners and they wanted to redevelop the site but development can't happen when a grade 2 building that would likely be listed by Historic England on site so, under great timing, the place had an accident.

    Sadly, it was recently sold to a *non English named buyer.* Locals tried to get it recognised as historical, (over400yrs old) but within days of the *notice* to the purchaser, on Thursday 03/08/23 (I believe) the end of the lane was blocked by tons of of earth then it was torched the following night, Fire brigade couldn’t reach it in time due to the earth blockade! Police had earmarked it for forensic analysis & the *new owner* sent in the wrecking crew (SUNDAY 06/08/23) & flattened the whole thing, (probably hoping to remove evidence of arson) Today, the dogs went in anyway & it’s looking like arson, Council has got involved due to it being demolished without paperwork. But then, much like empty pubs purchased in London suffer by the same type of foreigners, just so they can build flats etc😢

    I lived in an old house that had sunken in one side. These same issues with walls and the floors being uneven. Not nearly to this extreme degree, but it did still make you walk funny and you'd feel like you'd lose your balance. We had put pylons under to help lessen the lean. The new house leans too. It's our region and the water table being so high.

    I went for a hike in Utah and I walked up a circular path, and beside me the water was all flowing UPHILL and this was for maybe a mile. The thing was, I was fighting to go uphill the whole time and on the way down I was going super fast and had to hold back to keep from slamming forward. I still can't believe it was mere optical illusion, it was like being in an MC escher.

    This video and others like it are now sadly the only reminders we have of The Crooked House (The Glynne Arms) as the new developers who bought it, set fire to it and then bulldozed the burned-out shell into a pile of rubble. So 10th August 2023 time of typing this, the pub is no more.

    There should be a new type of crime penned for things like this. I'd dub it "Cultural Treason". An act of deliberate destruction of a cultural or patrimonial asset, regardless of ownership.

    Gutted its been destroyed

    Instead of rebuilding the owners should be made to pay the rebuild costs…. The funds given to the local community who have had their heritage destroyed…. The site should be used to form a memorial garden and the surrounding area protected. From any redevelopment.

Now that is no more, this vlog takes on a whole new significance. Unfortunately, if the pub was frequented and visited by more people, it needn't have been sold. Therefore, it would still be there. RIP 😢

    So mining disturbed the ground on the the one side and the sinking began. The owners and the town should have forced the mining company to pony up funds to address these issues or, move the house early on! In 1999, I attended the moving of the Cape Hatters Light station in Burton, N.C., USA. The 1870, iconic, brick, 4800 ton behemoth lighthouse, just shy of 200’ tall, was nearly been swallowed by the Atlantic Ocean. It was jacked up, steel beams and cribbing, installed under it, then set on rollers, it moved appx. 2” ever hour. It took 23 days to move it 2900’, inland. The moving crew allowed us teenagers to crawl under it during the process. Man has long been able to rescue and or move huge structures, it’s a shame the crooked house didn’t get rescued in time, by now the house, as evidenced by the interior buckling is possibly to unstable to move. At least they added steel beams and buttresses to stop its lean, it should be leaning for folks to enjoy, for a long time coming.
