Great video. I should point out that I've had success with Radish started in cells. Using Charles Dowding's tips I multisew 3-4 in a cell and then transplant. Works great!

Hi Gary, This was a great video for me just starting a fall garden. I do have 2 questions. When you say mix Pete moss and earth, what would I use if I don't have extra dirt in my yard? Could I use top soil? What would you suggest? Also I do winter sowing in milk jugs for spring. Could I use this potting mixture for that instead of using a more expensive potting mix like Pro-Mix? I love your videos!!!

thanks for the great post Gary. I see that you are germinating these seeds outdoor. aren't you worried to get fungus gnat infestation? Specially since I noticed you didn't use any cinnamon or neem oil on your seed trays.
Outside I dont worry too much as Nature fights Nature but sometimes they get caterpillars. I just keep an eye on them.

If in seeds trays, I recommend no as the compost sometimes is not 100% broken down. Great for the garden and all that.

Thanks Gary! How do you store your seeds so that they keep from year to year? Usually a pack comes with more seeds than I can plant (especially if I'm planting multiple types/vegetables). How/where would you recommend storing them?

Egg cartons rock. Plus, for the varieties that hate transplanting like canteloupe, watermelon, peas, etc, they can just be planted as is without disturbing the roots. Brilliant!

Just don't think you can beat rootrainers for planting peas and most everything else. Gets you air pruning from the beginning, easily reused, and compact for storing. Can't beat them for optimum root formation!
Snow peas , The seed packs suggest starting the seed in January. I'm in zone 8A Would you start them in Nov., or Dec. the reason I ask. By the time they start putting on pods. The heat has started to rise. And by early May. They are overdone toast!
I used to live in zone 8 (Texas) so I understand your struggles lol I wouldn't start them till October to be honest it's still way to hot in August and Septemberber. A garden journal really helps too because you can keep track of your weather and planting times. If it does freeze where you live then buy a cover and that should help them last all winter long
We are growing zone 8a as well and we are going to start our peas this month as well

I have a hard time getting cilantro to sprout/grow, what can you recommend ?
I have tried planting in cold and over wintering the seeds, planting in late winter, and even in the dead heat of summer. I’m in Florida.
Plant lots of seed. Yep. Extra seed as sometimes the seeds just arent viable.

Check to see if your seed is viable by germinating a few test seeds in moist paper towel. Cilantro sprouts pretty quickly. You'll see in short order whether or not your seed is good. You shouldn't need to cold plant the seeds... Cilantro germinates best between 75 and 85F.
I bought seeds from baker creek, when those didn’t sprout. I bought from several different places and none have sprouted. So I have just been buying ready starts from the store.

birds ate all my beet and kohlrabi seedlings. : ( They also go after the tomatoes, so those are all covered with netting. And there are pests of some sort eating kale and chard. (Neemed them) Not to mention the rabbits eating squash and baby melons. It's almost enough to turn a person against nature. lol.

uh-oh...I started mine in cells and trays in the house under grow lights and heat mat. Should i turn off lilghts/mats and put them outside...zone 8 GA? So hot here.

We are both in Zone 7 maryland, any luck growing carrots this time of the year?
Carrots tend to be a long season plant.
They do take a while but a dwarf or short carrot might get in There. Youll need a solid 60-90 days. of no deep freezing.

Is it necessary to sterilize the starting soil if I'm seed starting outdoors?
You shouldn't have to Cynthia. Any good organic potting mix will do... Even if you make your own with your compost. Active soil is not a bad thing!
Well this was timely! Started my fall crops in trays under my covered front porch yesterday. Mostly shaded all day with a little afternoon sun. I forgot about kohlrabi & cilantro, so TY for the reminder.
