    Presentation Overview:
This presentation will draw upon findings from a recently completed doctorate study, focusing upon the process of giving up driving in later life. The study explored the perspectives of current and retired older drivers, as well as their informal support network members. This included family members, friends, and members of the community. For the purpose of this presentation, findings relating to the experiences informal support network members will be drawn upon only. Primarily, two major areas were highlighted relating to this group. Firstly, network members drew upon consideration factors relating to the provision of support for the older person. This included both motivators and de-motivators for providing help. Secondly, outcomes were identified, which were both practical and psychosocial in nature. This ranged from changes to working patterns to accommodate the older adult’s needs, to feeling of guilt, stress, and sense of purpose. Coping strategies were also drawn upon as a sub-section of outcomes. These included trip chaining, and utilising support from personal networks. Findings have important implications for policy, practice, as well as older adults and their informal support networks.
