    I have watched 40-50 videos on rendering beeswax and yours is by far the best and the key as you mentioned is a paper towel on the paint strainer.

    Me too! This is the easiest method I have seen after viewing several peoples' method.
    You only used simple equipment: crock pot, paint-strainer bag, and paper towel but got great results! Keeping that strainer bag and paper towel above the water is key in getting great results on the first rendering. For all you serious beekeepers, Dadant sells a Liquidator (M00394) which is the same type of setup only bigger. Thanks for Sharing Nota Farm Girl: a Homestead Adventure

      Ah! If we get more hives (hopefully through splits) I may have to upgrade. :) Thanks for the great comment.

    Thank you for sharing this straightforward method. I tried rendering for the first time yesterday and it was so helpful! I just used an old pillow case cut down to half size to filter (which I'll try re-using) instead of a paint strainer with paper towel and it worked really well :)

    phew glad to find this video of yours! i was a bit overwhelmed with some other videos i had seen. this looks far more approachable with me only having a bit of wax currently!

      This really is an easy way to do it. I now have a second larger crockpot that I use for more wax at a time.

    After watching many videos I’m going to try it this way. Thanks for showing where a lesson was learned so that we could learn along with you! Now to go find an old crockpot!

    Thank you so much!! I was gifted some beeswax which still had a bit of impurities in it. Watched your video and went out and bought a used crock pot and a paint strainer to fit over the crock.
    I was really happy with the overall product after following your instructions. I made the mistake of letting the clean wax sit cool too long in the crock pot and it was very hard to take the wax out of the pot even with a knife. Also, while the wax was cooling down, it formed a crack. What caused the crack? Not a biggie as I need to cut it anyways but I was just curious.

      I’m so glad it worked for you! I would suggest putting a little more water in the crock pot, it’s easier the get the wax out if it’s floating.

    Hi! Thanks for the video! I was wondering...how do you manage the paint strainers and cleaning them after use? Does the paper towel help? 🤔

    • @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm

      I render all my wax for one year at a time, then discard the strainer. I keep any paper towels to use as firestarter

    I’m not clear why you put water in the crock pot. I just rendered wax for the first time and I got another pound of honey that came from the wax. Just curious!

    • @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm
      @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The water makes it easy to get the cooled wax out of the crockpot. without it, the wax would be stuck to the bottom and sides. I've not heard of harvesting honey while rendering wax before. I don't think I would have that much left. I try to drain it completely before rendering.

      Yes, a paint strainer. They are sometimes hard to find in stores, but here’s an Amazon link:

    • @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm
      @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why do you hate the crock pot? In general, or specifically for bees wax? You could probably do the filter thing over a low temp burner or in the oven.

    New beekeeper's wife. Why would you set the comb out for the bees to clean prior to rendering??

    • @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm
      @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Cindi! If there were any usable resources left in the comb, such as honey, pollen, or nectar, I would want the bees to have it rather than it go to waste. Also, they more they clean it up for me, the less gunk will have to be filtered out.
      Good luck with your bees!

    • @lenoretalon9958
      @lenoretalon9958 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The bees do an excellent job of cleaning the wax and get fed at the same time. I will put a spin out box of honey frames on a weak hive for them to strengthen the weak or first year hive. Then I remove the box and render the comb I don’t want to reuse.

    what about if you still have honey in your beeswax?

    • @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm
      @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      squeeze and strain out the honey first. If there's a little left in the wax it will separate during rendering.

    Gma said she found that womens pantyhose works best. Just don't squeeze. Then strain one last time over cheesecloth.
    (Place wax in pantyhose and dunk into hot water bath of 170° - 180°. Remove pantyhose allowing it to strain then strain last bit over cheesecloth.
    Also, make sure you don't go over 170° ‐ 180°. You will discolour your wax and burn it.)
