im doing the same right now with shimano zee cranks for my dirtjumper im halfway and its looking good. i actually started with 1000 sandpaper going to 2500 and finishing with some polishing paste so thats its basically gonna be a mirror.
Nice. Out of interest, did you need to keep polishing them every few weeks, or did they oxidise? I'm keen to try it but not sure if I want to keep polishing all the time . More worried about oxidising than scratches .
Henry C a clear coat would wear off quick with the crank arms rubbing your shoes. Sanding with the fine grit sandpaper leaves it smooth and it’s not going to rust. Hope that helps!
Mitch Walsh I usually get the forks dialed in and then leave them alone. Once I get my volume spacers, air pressure and rebound where I like them I stop. And yup, still 135 so haven’t had to change much
Try a glass bead blaster next time, (you can get a hand held outdoor version at Harbor Freight for $20) It will do the job in about 15 minutes and will leave a very even aluminum color. If you want to get spiffy ( oh yeah) you can use a spray can dupli-color adhesive promoter then pick your paint color to match your bike etc, or you can just use clear (after adhesive promoter) paint and the untarnished metal look will hang around about a year longer. It will still wear off but the adhesive promoter will keep it looking good for a few good rides. Using a bead blaster and painting will still take less time than hand sanding. P.S. if you don't have one I live down the street in Marietta. Hit me up. See you on the trails.
A glass bead blaster would make this simple work! If I ever do this again, I will have to snag one. Thanks man, holler if you see me on the local trails!
Waste of time, or worth the look? What do you think?
I would do this procedure on my Black 105 to match my raw Titanium Road bike look
Thumbs up just for pulling the cranks outta the fridge - nice result dude! 👍🏻
I got you Drew! Always watch your videos
I just did this and I found using paint stripper and a wire brush to get into the nooks and crannies works a charm
Heck yeah bro! Will keep that in mind for sure
you could use caustic soda to de anodize aluminum it works y used on my dirt bike rims
I gotta say I really like the raw look color
Adam and I say it was worth the time for the retro-looking cranks. Katie says " I don't get it"
They look sooo sick!!!! 🤙🤟

I never polished them again and they didnt oxidise
Aluminum doesn't oxidize like steel. It'll be fine
Is there a need for a clear coat?

just what i needed litterally no vids like this
So sick dawg!!! keep up the good work!!
Great video man. Are you constantly adjusting your forks? Do you still weigh 135 lbs?

Thanks for the tip Jeff!
Does the aluminum look weather out over time?
@@JasonLiske yes, no matter what you do it will look worn again
Nice, but...
Merlin cycles in the UK are selling these cranks for £130 a pair brand new....
So? That's a lot of cash to throw away if the old ones still work fine
Will you go faster now, or just look purdy?
go cooler
Fun, i like your film making, thank for using a mic, lol.
Haha my family has those plates
When you said 220 grit sandpaper did you mean 120 because 220 is still considered fine while 120 is definitely coarse?
There should be "raw" option for any bike and any bike part
