  • “Pseudosceintific critters” are parasites that consume the resources of the unprepared. Although they have adapted camflauge to appear as scientific evidence-based practice, they can be detected by those who know the signs. In this TEDx Talk, learn how to spot Science’s arch nemesis, Pseudoscience! Based on observations from the field of autism education and treatment, this talk challenges viewers to identify logical fallacies and magical thinking in their own life by examining examples of pseudoscientific products from the past and present. Dr. Russell Lang is the Executive Director of the Clinic for Autism Research, Evaluation and Support (CARES) at Texas State University. He has authored numerous books and over a 150 scientific peer-reviewed articles. This research focuses on the identification of evidence-based practices for the education and treatment of people with neurodevelopmental disorders. He is the recipient of Texas State University’s Presidential Award for Excellence in Research and the Association of Positive Behavioral Supports Ted Carr Initital Research Award. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This type of talk should be done on both sides of the aisle not just what is obvious.

Yes i feel cringed to people who accused it with "pSeUdOsCiEnCe" term, why you only rely on the science that's in the mainstream side which is not 100% revealed, why don't you be CREATIVE, because creativity brings the idea, just like lightbulb by thomas a. edison, its all hypothesis until they can proof it, just like UFO or alien, after that you can just win the nobel prize. Dig down the ancient technology that has been existed for over 1 million years, time doesn't exist because all event happened in the same time. "Time is but stubborn illusion." - Albert Einstein. "The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence." - Nikola Tesla The Greatest Ascended Master of All Time.

Great video. Thank you for posting. I work with individuals with ASD and one of the parents of my client asked about weighted blankets as a therapy. I typed in the TH-cam search "autism and pseudoscience" and this talk came up. It is very helpful.

Hey there, I have aspergers/autism and I hate weighted blankets. They make me feel like I'm in a straight jacket. On the other hand, my mother who is also autistic loves them. I think it's down to personal preference more than anything.

Lack of scientific studies does not make something false. It’s important to understand what motivates what we do and do not study, including the ability to streamline studies for certain things. Effective treatments may also be harmful when used inappropriately. Evidence based practice is not the end all be all, and has certainly not favored somatic approaches.

Very interesting video. It brought to mind trump's constant repeating of "everyone knows" whatever he is lying about to be true. I do believe that the notion that if 'everyone' believes something, then there must be some validity to that something. Some of us have never considered popularity of a belief to be the proof of the validity of that belief and I think Dr Lang explains that very well.
