On the topic of persona 2 having an adult cast: its really funny how Ulala struggles with a lack of love life because she has a cursed trait that she cannot escape from that ruins any potential relationship, and its "being 25"

I think the story of the translation basically goes like, some dude joined the original translation team to learn all the tools and whatever they used to make it and eventually went radio silent because the original team was taking a long time to actually implement their translation.
At some point the dude found another team, those guys decided to just edit the PS1 version's translation to make it more accurate to later terms and whatever, got permission to use someone else's translation of the new content in the PSP version so that the game would be accessible in English.
Apparently a thing in the translation community is that when a group claims a game, basically no one else works on it because it's kinda bad manners or something like that so a gane could end up nowhere for decades because of that. So for someone to basically snipe a translation out of the blue like this is wild.

if a game is good enough or popular enough, some other team might take up the translation usually long after the first team is done, i guess not to step on anyone's toes. Even Final Fantasy 2 NES has more than one fan translation available.

A Translation Group will also Stop translating a Game if a Previously Untranslated Game gets officially Translated, like for example, the Spanish FanTranslation of the PC Port of Persona 4 Golden was pretty much finished with only the testing being the only thing remaining, then it was announced that Persona 4 would recive an Official Spanish Translation via a Patch, so the Group that was doing the Translation decided to Cancel it

Yeah, the original team was never to release anything, someone else needed to step in. Just look at Fate/Extra CCC almost a decade to translate the game and they only said it was 100% translade out of fear that the project may get snipe by another team, just like P2EP.

I adore the PSP version of EP to death mainly for the new Tatsuya scenarios we can play through. It does an incredible job in highlighting the struggles he deals with in this new world and pushes him far past most characters in this franchise for me. You mentioned what would the people who played Revelations: Persona would think of P2:EP back in the day? Well I'm not a boomer, but I do remember that Matt from SGB (Super Gaming Brothers, they were a cool let's play channel who unfortunately ended back in 2020) was actually one of those players back in the day)
If I remember correctly he got P1 back when he younger and played it a lot, soon after he'd get P2:EP and, despite not getting background stuff from Innocent Sin, mentions how it's his favorite game ever. I just find it interesting since he's the only person I've ever heard how actually played the earlier persona games when they originally came out here in the west, unlike the rest of us who got later through the liking the later persona games and then went work our ways backwards, highly recommend their old playthroughs
Also if you're planning on playing P1 again, I highly recommend waiting a bit because I believe the original PS1ver. is getting a translation soon, last I heard they were 90% with the SEBEC questline and were starting on Snow Queen along with that they're also gonna release a beta

    • @thatgamingauthor

Ooh, I didn't know there was a translation for the original PS1 version of P1 in the works. I'll have to keep an eye out for that! I've played the PSP version a few times, and I tried the current English release of the PS1 version, but couldn't quite get into it.

Adult casts of characters in JRPGs are a tough sell considering the traditionally shounen target audience of most JRPGs. The only JRPGs with (mostly) adult casts that come to mind for me are Lost Odyssey, Ogre Battle 64, Final Fantasy XII, and some of the older Fire Emblem games (Gaiden, Thracia, and Path of Radiance come to mind). Final Fantasy XII is an especially odd case considering Vann and Pinello (the only teenage characters in the main cast) were shoe-horned into the cast due to corporate meddling from Square Enix.

    • @drbuni
      @drbuni 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Maybe it was a tough sell back then, but now there are enough people playing games that there are no excuses not to have turn based RPGs featuring adults, or featuring monsters without any human whatsoever, or featuring whatever, really.

The reason why people keep constantly bringing up the whole adult cast thing, in my opinion at least, is because they’re right. Yeah, it’s not gonna magically make the story good, but high school is just so wildly overdone, not only in persona but in Japanese media in general. We’ve had three persona games about a second year transfer student at this point, and I’m just ready for something new. And of course I’m aware that P2EP exists, but classic persona may as well be a different series. I would love a modern style game with social links and life sim stuff with a cast of adults. i'm not an omega boomer, i started Persona around the time Golden came out, maybe a year later, but it WAS with Revelations: Persona. i fucking hated it because i couldn't figure out where the hospital was. dropped it, went on to Eternal Punishment. for like, two or three years i had NO CLUE that there was another persona 2 game that i missed. i've basically played persona in order outside of playing 2 before i finished 1, but i DID go back to p1, and i've played both PSP and Revelations, and it's a game i enjoy these days(knowing that R2 is the map helped).
but yeah, i had NO IDEA that i was missing a chunk of the persona story. i think EP does a fine enough job of making you FEEL Maya's confusion if you play it first. it's great, i think playing EP first is a really unique experience that helps the player relate to Maya more. obviously it isnt the intended way, and i'd never recommend it over IS first, but it's an experience i'm glad to have.
if you're going to replay, or PLAY persona 1, wait on Tom's translation patch. it'll be done soonish i imagine.

14:50 Man, am I really an omegaboomer? I was _really_ young back then, but I still remember the discourse on GameFAQs and beyond. The MegaTen community that existed in the west was very small back then, and the games had a very spooky mystique that was slowly unveiled across the 00s as more games were officially released during the PS2 era and several key older games got fan translations.
People came into the fandom not understanding anything, but the community as a whole was overall very well aware of what we were missing out on and the early jank of Persona's official releases. It's no wonder at all that P1's localization is one of the first talking points surrounding it even to this day, since it was a big thing even back then. Rather than blissful ignorance, misinformation and exaggerated rumors were a much bigger problem.
I actually didn't play Revelations: Persona when I was getting into MegaTen, but I _did_ play EP and IS out of order, technically. I played EP first, hit a roadblock because that game was brutal, actually finished IS on emulator when it got translated a few years later, and then went back to restart and finish EP. When I first played EP, it didn't feel like I was missing context, but more like everything that happened in IS was just the background info of EP's narrative. I'm not sure I actually understood the significance of who "Nate" and "Elly" were until some point in my second playthrough, when I was looking into stuff online more.
Even back then, IS was considered way easier than EP, but one thing of note is that on the PS1 version of IS, the final boss certainly felt like an enormous spike in difficulty compared to the rest of the game. It was more like an EP fight than an IS fight, doing huge damage and demanding you actually play carefully and tactically. The irony of this is that EP's final boss was generally considered a pushover by comparison.
Playing P2 back then was quite a journey, and it felt special to me at the time because it was a big unknown. It felt like delving into something obscure and mysterious that was epic and not entirely well-understood. It really seemed like this was the bedrock of P3, which I played around the same time (it was exciting to hear about THE GIGACHAD EIKICHI making it big in P3). Nyarlathotep, who won in IS and was deeply malicious and cunning in ways the antagonists of P3 and P4 simply weren't, definitely came off as the true ultimate villain of the entire Persona series. It always felt like he'd come back at some point during a big crossover, and P4 Arena seemed to be that time. A lot of people thought a more emphasized Persona series continuity would suddenly be a real thing, only for that to... not pan out at all.
I can definitely see why people hold P2 above the later Persona games in that sense. P2 _felt_ big and important and unknown compared to P3 and especially P4. It was the DEEP LORE. It's just as understandable why it feels nowadays like it's just a weird old game in a series that's moved on. Looking at it in a vacuum with the advances in game design that came later, it's not as instantly exciting as it was when it was made on an immediately preceding console generation. In the 00s, SMT felt fresh and obscure with deeper and darker themes born of its heavy use of religion, psychology, and apocalypses. At this point, Persona is very mainstream and MegaTen as a whole is a lot more familiar, so we're aware of how goofy and stilted it can sometimes get.

I think that’s part of the point? They’re adults and the situation they’re facing is different with the new world order than with the masked circle. The masked circle while threatening had a comical aura around them because of how bizarre everything was, EP takes itself a lot more seriously because it can afford to it also has that Y2K/Early 2000s vibe going on which adds to its atmosphere being different than IS which I like. Any more similarities and it might as well have been DLC (or whatever the equivalent for that was in the old days)

Yes I still do believe that we do need some more adult protagonists in the series but I do agree that it has to be written well so that way we could have adult protagonists that are good and/or believable. It is pretty much sad when you realize that out of all the games at least in terms of some of the spin offs at the top of my head that have adult protagonists is soul hackers 2 and Persona 2 Eternal Punishment. It is a heavy pipe dream at this point considering that we're gonna be getting teenagers for the rest of our lives since Japan really likes going back to their gory days, but at least rerelease both Persona 2's, not just Persona 2 Eternal Punishment PS1 and Persona 2 Innocent Sin PSP. And I know I know Altus just loves to pretend that persona 1 and 2 don't exist or that they won't sell as well as 3 4 and cough 5 cough, but all I am saying is just take a risk. Great revew overall!

I still think the best persona cast would be 2 adults, 2 teenagers, 2 kids and a pet.

I'm here to see if is worth it to finish the first game to play the second but I'm not sure...
The first game is SOOOOOO ANNOYING bro, it is battle every 5 seconds and the battle is BOOOOOOORING, and you have to go in these places everytime to get a little bit of lore, bro.......................................
I really like the plot, the characters, the design (I think that these 2 games looks beautiful) but maaaaan.... It is sooo booring to pass through......
