New Zealand band from the early 90s. Originally called Otara Millionaires Club after the Otara Suburb of Auckland where lead singer Paul Fuemana grew up. Fuemana died in 2010 of a rare neurological disorder aged 40. His brother, also in the band, (in the back of the car in the video) died of a heart attack 5 years earlier, also aged 40
In interviews, Fuemana explained that the lyrics were not meant to have a literal meaning, but rather to capture the feeling of a wild and crazy road trip. He said that the phrase “how bizarre” was something he and his friends would say whenever they encountered something strange or unexpected.
Some more 90s quirk for you - "Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba, "Your Woman" by White Town, "The Impression That I Get" by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and for the ultimate in quirk that may just make you a bit teary-eyed, "Everybody's Free To Wear Sunscreen" by Baz Luhrmann.

one of the other kinda different song from the early 90's was "Justified & Ancient" by The KLF featuring Tammy Wynette. That one was a surprising hit, and also nothing expected.

I have loved this song and the album since it first came out. A unique blend of polynesian and western sounds from a native New Zealand group. Yes! I'm now 67.
One hit wonder from New Zealand. OMC (Otara Millionaires Club) charted "How Bizarre" which peaked @ #4 on Billboard's Hot 100 AIRPLAY chart in 1997. "HB" debuted on the 4/26/97 Billboard chart and stayed for 51 weeks!
It was #1 on Billboard's Mainstream Top 40 in August '97, due to the amount of radio airplay it received. It never charted on the regular Billboard Hot 100 because it was never released as a commercially available single in the US, which was a chart-eligibility requirement at the time. It was a BMI-certified "Million Airplay" song two years in a row.
Fabulous Kiwi band with a great vibing song to just make you feel good. Tragedy behind it when lead singer Pauly Fuemana and his older brother Phil both died in 2005 and 2010 respectively. Music style here in New Zealand is known as Urban Pacifica, and this band and the brothers are regarded as icons of the local music industry. Just wonderful music to chill out to.
The song was inspired by a road trip that Fuemana and his brother took in the '80's, along the way they saw all kinds of things that would end up helping create the song. As always, love your reactions and especially when the chair dancing starts, you two are wonderful.
Its rare for a New Zealand artist to make such a big sudden impact on the charts but OMC did it with a catchy simple song. Lorde had a similar success in 2013 with "Royals"
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! My hands down favorite 90’s song. My daughter was about Luca’s age or a tad older and one day we’re cruising down the road, the song is playing on the radio, and I hear this little voice from the back seat “how bizarre, how bizarre” and then a little giggle. It became our cruising song - Just hers and mine. Thanks for the memories!
This one sent me off on a bit of a tangent. In the lyrics of this song is the phrase "Destination Unknown". That reminded me of the song "Destination Unknown" from Missing Persons [early 80s]. They're another group you haven't found yet. Their other most noteworthy songs are "Words" and "Walking in L.A.".

You really wanna do late '90s, you have to check out the brief neo-swing movement that just happened to happen, lol. Brian Setzer Orchestra's cover of Louis Prima's "Jump Jive and Wail" is super cool. Also "Zoot Suit Riot" by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies (they did two videos for this, one early one and one with an MTV budget for when the song hit the charts) or "Brown Derby Jump." Then there's Big Bad Voodoo Daddy with "You & Me & the Bottle Makes Three." Now come on, you can't say you're not curious about these band names and song titles 😄
Great suggestions. Neither sound had longevity - not because they were bad; maybe just because there weren’t many artists who could do that modern-classic sound.
Colin James (a Canadian artist) had an entire album of jump-blues and swing tunes during that time. It was called "Colin James and the Little Big Band" IIRC. Fantastic album. They made a decent amount of music, but this was really their only huge international hit. The band came from a bit of a rough background and actually had somewhat of a sad story. You can see an interesting doco about it here: th-cam.com/video/-bZxrQPmPKg/w-d-xo.html EDIT: if you want me to come right out and say it, I'll say it. Probably what's so unique about this song to you guys is the fact that the band is Maori. You've probably never heard that particular cultural influence come through in a big hit song before. Like even the lead singer's unusual cadence and accent is particularly Maori. That's the whole thing here. I loved the first verse where the cop pulls them over just so he can admire the car! It’s just a series of things that happened along a drive. The aging circus that advertises elephants and monkeys but they’ve all died, but hey, the clowns are still here! It’s funny how many if the words of this song I remembered! 🤦🏻
This was 1997 in San Diego for me. San Diego is the only city in the US that has perfect weather. January high temperature 70, July high temperature 85.
Now that I am older I can listen to grunge and enjoy it. Somewhere in the mid-90s artist said life isn't so bad and start putting out these happy feel good songs ....... I love them too.
A lot of 90s songs have a nod to the stylings of the 60s. Which makes an old hippie like me really enjoy many of the songs of the 90s. I suggest Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand by the Primitive Radio Gods, which is kinda philosophical but also a groove.
SOABPBWMIMH is such a great example of a creative, interesting and unusual 90's song. Also the name Primitive Radio Gods. My 18 year old (Gen Alpha?) daughter just loves to see the names come up when I have the 80's and 90's channels on the satellite radio (especially when it's focused on "alternative" music of both decades). I guess it doesn't strike me as odd having frown up with them. But, yeah... Toad the Wet Sprocket, Screaming Trees, Flock of Seagulls, Smashing Pumpkins, Fine Young Cannibals, Men without Hats (Yay, Canada!), Wall of Voodoo, The Flaming Lips, The Tragically Hip, (Yay, Canada!), Space Hog, Shreikback, Echo & the Bunnymen, Red Hot Chili Pepppers, Bronski Beat, School of Fish, Tripping Daisy, Pet Shop Boys, Third Eye Blind, Wang Chung, Hole, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Spin Doctors, the Pixies, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Oingo Boingo, Weezer, Barenaked Ladies (Yay, Canada!), the Goo Goo Dolls, the B-52's (Sorry they didn't resonate with you Jay!), Violent Femmes, Spandau Ballet, Dishwalla, 54-40 (Yay, Canada!), Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper, The Presidents of the United States of America, Kajagoogoo, CAKE, Incubus, The Dream Academy, Dinosaur Jr., Siouxsie and the Banshees, Jane's Addiction, XTC, Icicle Works, the Verve Pipe, Kon Kan (Yay, Canada!), Love and Rockets, Porno for Pyros, Re-Flex, Frankie goes to Hollywood, The Divinyls, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The La's, The Breeders, Rancid, Placebo, Semisonic, They Might Be Giants, Big Audio Dynamite, Husker Du, the Blow Monkeys, Sonic Youth, Timbuk 3, Bananarama, The Lightning Seeds, Martha and the Muffins (Yay, Canada!), Blind Melon, Bjork, The Lemonheads, Soul Asylum, The Stone Roses, Butthole Surfers, Crash Test Dummies (Yay, Canada!), Hootie & the Blowfish, the Dandy Warhols, Pulp, Blur, Supergrass, Gorillaz.... Okay. I'll stop. This is just a sampling of band names on my Spotify playlist. I'll be 51 in a few weeks. How about some of my fellow Gen X'ers back me up. Who knows music from any or all of the above. Give me a shout out! RSR gang, you're the best! Keep on being you and doing what you do. You always bring a smile to my face (even when you're disappointed in the song your reacting to).
This is one of those songs you know all the words to whether you want to or not. It's not a song you seek out, but you find yourself singing along to it when it finds you. It's just one of those things...lol.
Greetings from New Zealand, thanks for listening to one of the most successful songs to come from here. There is a great wealth of off beat and odd music that has come from NZ, perhaps try some Split Enz, The Dudes, The Exponents, Dragon, or perhaps some Fat Freddys Drop (I recommend anything from the Based on a True Story album, or better still, listen to it all), or one of the many 'Dunedin sound' bands of the 1970's/80's, The Clean or The Chills. There are also some very good contemporary bands like Six Sixty, Shihad and of course Lorde to name a few.
You had some bangers of 90s tunes lately. May I suggest "Tubthumping" by the band Chumbawamba (you will love the horn solos), "Cotton Eye Joe" by the Swedish Eurodance band RedNex, or "Justifed and Ancient" featuring country legend Tammy Wynette and the English Techno band The KLF.
I also feel that this was a find when MTV was really big with TRL, spring break shows, summer shows, it's the only time I remember people chasing after the "song of the summer" and that included songs like this and Steal My Sunshine and others.
As a New Zealander, I'm hugely proud of Pauly Faumana having a global hit, even if his demons later consumed him. It's never far from memory and being played wherever I go even now. Super cool and catchy ❤
90's they weren't afraid to be "Cringy" as kids say today, they just put out music that they felt and didn't matter if it touched a nerve or spoke out about horrible things happening in the world. The music of the 2000's has nothing on the 90's.
One of the best one hit wonders of the 90s. It’s So unique. Reminds me of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones (The Impression That I Get - The Video Version) A big band feel with a 90s twist. Dicky Barrett is such a strong singer. Definitely one of the best songs of 1997. You have to react to it. One of a kind.
@@davidwoolbright3675I said a big band feel, definitely not the big band sound. They knew how to use the horns and percussion with an up to-date sound.
the nineties are THE decade of experimentation. Enough pop history at the time (30 years) since the Beatles and a LOT of world music influence made 90s music especially creative. Try Apachi Indian - Boomshakalak
The best thing about the 90's was that all music genres were popular. Everything was accepted and celebrated. Had a ton of One Hit Wonders, though. Steal My Sunshine and this song, were both one hit wonders. Great songs, though.
Speaking of the 90's,, The Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots",, Jane's Addiction "Jane Says",, Garbage "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" & Blur "Song 2"
90s grunge.. "Stupid Girl" by Garbage. Female lead singer. Garbage was popular enough that they did the theme song for Bond movie "The World is Not Enough".
90s were the golden age of Country, R&B, Rap, and Grudge saved Rock music from the hair bands & Pop rock of the 80's. The 80's were all about excess & popularity & yuppies, 90s was a rebuttal to all that, with much more introspection & it's reflected in the music of the time. But then there were also some fun songs like this...
For me, I was born in 65 went out in the 1980s. It was kind of in a Nuwave and then the 90s was just like a whole different level! And you just felt that everything in life is going to get better… then 911 happened! Everything changed.
The 90s were such a great time for music. It wasn’t all boy bands and bubblegum pop singers. I remember Canada alone produced some great music, including Amanda Marshall, a soul rock singer who had such hits as Let It Rain, Birmingham, Believe In You and Fall From Grace. Her live performances in the 90s were epic and she’s back after a 15 year hiatus where she was screwed over by her record company. If you dig old school hip hop, Maestro Fresh Wes is one of the best to come out of Canada. Let Your Backbone Slide is legendary.

The Otara suburb is/was one of the poorest suburbs, making the name of the band more ironic.
Ya, it was tongue in cheek ..That area about the most depressed ,poor in Aukland .

I heard this song before and I never knew who did it so thank you for playing it
I was a manager of a Blockbuster Music during this time. They had that listening station at all stores and they wore the F@#$ outta this song lol.
"I liked it from the beginning, but i couldn't tell you why"
The 90's in a nutshell
Now that I am older I can listen to grunge and enjoy it. Somewhere in the mid-90s artist said life isn't so bad and start putting out these happy feel good songs ....... I love them too.
RIP Paul Lawrence Fuemana How Bizarre
It's a bit of a long song/band name to type out but that song has always been worth it.
Omc stands for Otara Millionaire Club ...Otara is the band's home town, from where I'm from, this was indeed a one hit wonder 😆😁
This is one of those songs you know all the words to whether you want to or not. It's not a song you seek out, but you find yourself singing along to it when it finds you. It's just one of those things...lol.
R.I.P Paul Fuemana.
Talofa e. 🙏🏼
INDEED . RIP . Left a classic though .
Side note about OMC. He played all the instruments on the song.
Wow just watching you guys from your reaction videos 2 years ago. I listened to you all for 9 hours today. Love you guys and always , good job.
Amber you got me rolling when you did the singers pose at the end. I love y'all. Y'all and your family always stay blessed and healthy ✝️🙏🛐🕊️
I’ve always loved this song
Singing along!
You gotta do Tubthumping by Chumbawamba. What an upbeat song.
Demons? He had a neurological disease
Dang it! After the 90s were over I couldn't get this song out of my head until 2003 and now it's living there rent free again! LoL
90's they weren't afraid to be "Cringy" as kids say today, they just put out music that they felt and didn't matter if it touched a nerve or spoke out about horrible things happening in the world. The music of the 2000's has nothing on the 90's.
I remember reading that the lead guy passed away. I checked, he passed in 2010. Very young.❤
They were Ska. Not big band. Very ska. And very good. Someday I Suppose is a complete Banger!!
@@davidwoolbright3675I said a big band feel, definitely not the big band sound. They knew how to use the horns and percussion with an up to-date sound.
BEST? BEST? THEY SUCKED
They had a ska feel I’m just saying they were ska and not big band. That sound you are hearing is Ska.
Negative. They did not suck. Sorry
the nineties are THE decade of experimentation. Enough pop history at the time (30 years) since the Beatles and a LOT of world music influence made 90s music especially creative. Try Apachi Indian - Boomshakalak
Have y'all reacted to Tubthumping by Chumbawumba? Another 90s unique song.
This makes me want to go and listen to Mink DeVille and Spanish Stroll
The best thing about the 90's was that all music genres were popular. Everything was accepted and celebrated. Had a ton of One Hit Wonders, though. Steal My Sunshine and this song, were both one hit wonders. Great songs, though.
stream the album. every song is pretty sweet, actually.
@@umji3389Still doesn't mean it wasn't a one hit wonder, it was .

Speaking of the 90's,, The Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots",, Jane's Addiction "Jane Says",, Garbage "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" & Blur "Song 2"
One-hit wonder from New Zealand.
You do realize have one hit in the United States, but they’re successful elsewhere
I never knew they’re from New Zealand. 👍🏻
@@Patric076 technically the name of New Zealand, which is being changed to Aotearoa
When Americans think they’re the planet.

90s grunge.. "Stupid Girl" by Garbage. Female lead singer. Garbage was popular enough that they did the theme song for Bond movie "The World is Not Enough".
The trumpet in the song is influenced from Mexican Mariachi music.
This song always makes me laugh! 😂❤
This is on like, every 90s party mix or pop channel. I never knew who sung it and never saw the video before.
I think both of you would love "One Week" by Barenaked ladies.
A 90s song you should check out is One Headlight with Jacob Dylan, Bob s son
For me, I was born in 65 went out in the 1980s. It was kind of in a Nuwave and then the 90s was just like a whole different level! And you just felt that everything in life is going to get better… then 911 happened! Everything changed.
9/11 changed the world far beyond what you get people can appreciate. So much of the sh1t today stems from that and what it spawned.
Still have this CD!! 💕
Born in 1962- I’m a 61 year old punk rock, metal guy. THIS is one of my favorite songs Ever!
great song for a summer playllist.. always reminded me of soCal for some od reason..probably the guitar
This whole album is really good…sad he passed away so young.
yeah that to both brothers at such a young age. Even a band member of OMC has died. :(((((((
Trumpet and accordion. Of course it's cool.
This was a great song sadly singer passed few years after 😢❤
The 90’s was an eclectic bag of fun and deep angst…all mixed together! Welcome to the journey of Generation X!
We Gen X had the best culture and music!
Republica- “Ready to Go” is another fun 90’s song.
There are plenty
The 90s were such a great time for music. It wasn’t all boy bands and bubblegum pop singers. I remember Canada alone produced some great music, including Amanda Marshall, a soul rock singer who had such hits as Let It Rain, Birmingham, Believe In You and Fall From Grace. Her live performances in the 90s were epic and she’s back after a 15 year hiatus where she was screwed over by her record company. If you dig old school hip hop, Maestro Fresh Wes is one of the best to come out of Canada. Let Your Backbone Slide is legendary.
OMC "Land Of Plenty" & "Right On"
Love this one
i was born in '78 so i was a teenager for the whole 90's and i loved that decade so much was happening and i think the 90's had the best music.
This band was from New Zealand. It’s one of those songs where you have pull up the lyrics cause it’s hard to hear everything he’s saying
