Yup! I have a similar 12U rack from a different company and their instructions state that as long as there's a device racked towards the top and on towards the bottom, that you can remove them. Mine are solid though, no speed holes!
100% - I have a wall mount 10U for my main networking gear under my basement stairs & replaced the top 1U blank with a patch panel, as long as there is something connected as a horizontal brace they’re usually happy.
Oh my god. I didn't even think of the potential that it could fall on him! I just started the video, and I might be wrong, but this seems like such a bad idea. It's also so much harder to reach when he needs it.
the other thing is you could install a shelf and or wire rack with wheels and save the money for more performant upgrades - nvme or ram - the rack is really unnecessary and unneeded - basically accurate #fab rats
Hey, feel free to offload a firewall to the UK if it's in your way! Love the look of that rack despite the -2 U taken by aesthetics, dang I need a garage. Do you use the PatchBox patch cable management in your main rack? it looks awesome however rather costly for a home lab at this point (and I don't yet have a rack!) Cool job 🙂. p.s I haven't ever seen a wall mounted rack ever come off the wall (Famous Last words 4), so above the door? why not?!
The UPS may not be much power output, but you'll definitely appreciate the power conditioning, which is arguably more important for sensitive electronic gear!
I have a home lab that's growing arms and legs, now seeking for the perfect nas and thinking to go proxmox server and run my VM inside a host vm and have more cores to run more hosts. Recently bypassed Starlink and upgraded to fixed ip and added two deco ax3000 which cover my 300sqmtr home with everyone getting fast wifi, instead of overheated Starlink router crap. My everyday machine is a Mac Studio M1 and my trusty old 2018 macbook pro with intel laptop. Now the SAN or Promox with SAN, not foinf anything wild just OMV which works for me as my vm and lxc are better on procxmox. I recently added diode to allow me proxy encrypted access to everything without forwarding any ports and has blockchain encryption...... I did find 32c 72 thread HP 500w x 2 8 bays for a 400 dollars which seems a steal, power not an issue as I am going all solar power anyway ans power is free during the day and at night it's just aircon and servers with starlink. Will have to get a rack soon.
Wall mount racks like that you want to have it mounted to a half inch or three quarter inch sheet of plywood that stretches across at least three studs. Then you mount the rack to that.
I’m shocked to see so many people using these TP-Link Omada products given how unstable their APs are. Had nothing but issues that required nightly scheduled reboots.
How do you think that would hold up on a 50 yacht? was thinking about the 10" with a couple of pi's to monitor everything. Not convinced yet which way to go.
tec mojo? i suggest getting dual 4k tv for the garage and a workbench - then when you are rebuilding some stuff poof you have exploded diagram/schematic and your youtube mymix on sep screens - even go overboard and have a janky refurb pc plus cheap monitor on the workbench. don't call it gilding the lily brett - it is basically advanced normal - do a follow up and get views - many people will watch it #sqlite garage dojo
Test rack means tinkering with things. Means connecting, disconnecting temporary back and forth... not properly fit / fixed / attached... and that's above the door? On a 6 footer? Bro, what made you hate yourself this much?
@RaidOwl the square holes are on the sides; I'm guessing it could be built in either orientation to allow for whichever to be used. That said, I don't have one, so I may be wrong on that; it just seems weird that they'd put threaded holes and square holes on the product without making it possible to be both from a production cost stand point (unless it's to reduce tooling costs if they sell them at two different options)
so, the trap will work even if you enter from the other door.. very clever guy🦖 ! wow we always need a plan b. 😂 silly question, maybe i lost it but ...if it is a test bench why you place it in a so terrible spot to reach?
@@RaidOwl i thought it was higher, at least from camera perspective.. even if to me in that position i would have saw a backup rack, something to split the loads... or move the essential home sevices to a better protected zone.. boh maybe i am seeing your project with my laziness 😂
I used to do IT work for a major US retailer--we'd frequently mount equipment above the warehouse doors. You know at least that will always be kept clear! The OSHA violation is being on a ladder to access that with the door closed... lol
Replace top bracket with PDU and buttom bracket with UPS. And you have 2 U right back ;)
Yes I was going to say this!!
Yup! I have a similar 12U rack from a different company and their instructions state that as long as there's a device racked towards the top and on towards the bottom, that you can remove them. Mine are solid though, no speed holes!
Now to do that while it’s attached to the wall 💪🏼

Was thinking this myself
No, my first question isn't "why do you need it?", it's "Why is it above the door? Doesn't that make physical access so much harder?"
Keeps the hackers away
run home lab above the door makes more sense than under Windows... :)
@@RaidOwlThey're all notoriously short, indeed

He should at least switch the rack's spot with the monitor next to it.
@@GameDesignerJDG its not harder to reach as my doorway is always clear so I can use my step ladder
As someone who has been wanting to invest in a rack setup for a long time, I appreciate this video
Drywall screws from the back of the shelf trough the front of the rack.
Or Zip ties 😉
Always zip ties
5:56 Can you explain further? Have you done any benchmarks?
Need one of those kvm drawers in there somewhere for maximum impracticability.
I can sympathize on running cable with injury. Dealing with a bad back and a torn rotator cuff, while running new lines for cameras and other items.
I think the 2U vent spots are just for stability. Can you remove them and add a switch or something in its place?
Probably
isn't the point of a test system easy access? having to get a ladder out everytime you want to play around with new gear sounds... tedious
I have a small foldable ladder than does the trick in my office

It’s mounted directly to studs
Amazing work! Such a hard working, talented professional. Keep the great content coming ❤️✨🍣
That's a spicy pull-up bar ya got there.
I became a Dry-Wall Anchor!! ❤😍
I have wall mount racks. I find cable management too painful, so I'm moving what I can to a floor rack. But, yeah, looks good.
When he said, "your dumb", it hurt me.
He meant himself but it 2qs so loaded I got hit in the collateral damage 😂😂😂😂
If you had a sheet of 3/4" plywood mounted to that wall your equipment would be a lot more sturdy
I mean its pretty sturdy since its mounted directly to studs. The concern was more for dramatic effect lol

I support the new rackening.
I'm weird I guess. Not needing a rack but that wall PC mount is worth bookmarking.
Where in Canada are you going? I am from Alberta. Hope you enjoy your time here.

Use rack studs if you’re gonna be swapping stuff in/out of the rack frequently.

Three weeks from now that server rack will come down from the wall and be on casters...
Now that Ubiquiti released the PowerAmp you are now going to need speakers.🤣
