Van Basten was truly the "one chance one goal" type player. He never missed. One of the greats.

@@saggy1787 that's what I mean, marco van basten wasn't at his peak. A peak biologically is 28-32. He retired at the beginning of his peak and probably with his talent could have played until minimum 35 max 38. I do think without his injuries playing alongside Dennis Bergkamp the Netherlands would have won a world cup. Him, ruud gullit and Johan cruyff are underrated when compared to the usual "GOATS"
At 28-32 you're no longer at your peak in football, which is usually 24-28 years especially with the training and facilities available at the time. Maradona was at his best at 26, Pelé's last world cup he was 29 and no longer at his peak although still very good. Even Leo Messi with all the training advances and playing in a much less physical era has been steadily declining, at a slower pace than was usual for a player in the 80s of course, since turning 30.

Not from The Netherlands, but what an unbelievable team they had then. From Van Breukelen to Van Basten, they just oozed talent and class. Geraldinho was one of my personal, unsung favourites. Gullit was artistic on the ball. I miss those days. The Dutch are such a nice and humble people by the way. Loads of respect from Ireland.

As a proud Englishman, the only country I'm happy to see win other than us are the Dutch, for such a small nation they constantly produce amazing players! I remember as a 13 year old seeing the Dutch beat England 3-1 in a very good game, I recently purchased both shirts from that game as I love both kits and very iconic etc

In those times European cup tournaments were so big, so massive and impressive that after seeing it once, you keep remembering them for the rest of your life, for decades, almost every game of those. Just like myself. Nowadays, something went totally different. Try to remember anything truly valuable about e.g. Euro-2012. Not that easy, right? I might be wrong though...

There is a different feel to it + it only happening every 4 years makes it a rarity and winning the tournament will cement your name in history with makes it intense especially in the knockout games. Если же нет, то приходилось терпеть мучения, как первая игра против той же Голландии и матч с Ирландией на том же ЧЕ или вылет из группы на чемпионате мира в Италии. Стабильности не хватало, стабильности уровня, я бы сказал.
Тактически переиграл Михелс Лобановского, гол ван Бастена-такие залетают раз в 50 лет, попроси повторить не забил бы сам Пеле.Пенальти Беланова все бывает, волновался, сборная заслуживает уважения за выход финал
The Soviets in the 80s had a phenomenal GK called Rinat Dasayev. He was an amazing player but what is most memorable about this GK was that he conceeded some of the prettiest & most wonderful goals in Football history! In 1982 Brazil scored 2 magnificent goals against the Soviets....they were scored by Socrates & Eder....BEAUTIFUL goals.....& again in 1988, the amazing goal by Van Basten, shown in this clip......mind you, Ruud Gullit's header was also a fantastic goal!

Jaap Stam was a very strong defender and would make most countries all time team team. But the fact is Holland has an embarrassment of riches: Stam was not a better defeder than Krol, Rijkaard, De Boer or van Hanegem. There is also no room for Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wesley Sneijder, Clarence Seedorf or Robin van Persie.

Netherlands '88 squad made me become a football fan, and support them in international tournament. Netherlands participation in Euro'88 was just like Hollywood action movie. Playing in their arch rival country, start the game with losing, through to the semis with dramatic win vs Ireland, defeated the host Germany even trailing first at semis and winning the final with the superb, timeless quality goal from Van Basten! The only major trophy they won until now. Truly Hollywood stuff!
