If any of my teachers would break down to almost tears at a sight of a problem, i'd just walk out.
All i got from this episode was "its beautiful" n times > quickly brush over the actual explanation of why it is, and why/ how it facilitates the next steps. I suck at Sudoku, but i've seen them solve A LOT of episodes and i was able to keep up. If i was new, would have been interested in learning sudoku and would have clicked on the video based on the title of "Actually Teaches" , i'd have given up half way through, thinking its not for me :))

Things we have learned so far on Cracking the Cryptic:
    1. 10 is not between 1 and 9 and cannot be placed in a sudoku
    2. the numbers from 1-9 sum to 45
    3. the end of a month means that it is almost the beginning of a new month

oh this is a lovely puzzle that finally helped me to get to grips with x-wings, i needed the guidance of where the 4 and 8 x-wings were, and then the swordfish of 9 (something i haven't learnt to utilise yet), and from there managed to solve without further help. Would love to see more classic sudoku like this now and then!

    • @FirstLast-gw5mg

Usually what I do (often after getting stuck) is select a digit and just start using highlighting to mark rows, columns, boxes, and cells that I've either already filled in or know cannot contain the digit I'm looking for, and then it becomes much easier to see the patterns. If I can find a set of X rows where the digit is locked into the same X columns in each row, it likewise has to be locked into those X rows in those columns, so I can go up and down those columns excluding it from all the other rows. The same applies if a set of X columns exists where it's locked into X rows.

If you didn't spot the swordfish like I didn't, this can be completed with 5 different x-wings! The 4s first, then 8s, 7s, 6s and 5s. I'd much rather have spotted the swordfish but I was impressed with myself for finding all these and my 43 minute solve :)

the way its build to gradually introduce more complex techniques is brilliant
it starts with 1,2,3 which are elementary and easy , than you need to use the markings, and so on..
the fact it uses the number 4 to teach X-wing that involves 4 squares and 9 to teach swordfish that involves 9 squares is also a beautiful touch
this not only teaches but only allows you to see where you stand in your current ability , where you should improve

This was also a great tutorial of using the highlighting to find the swordfish and xwing patterns. I’ve been resorting to filling in all possible digits once I get past all the obvious techniques. While it helps a bit to isolate these advanced patterns, it makes the grid really cluttered. The highlighting mitigates that a lot. Thanks for another great solve explanation :)

An important thing to know about the Swordfish is the fact that it doesn't have to be 3 available spots in _every_ row (or column, respectively).
Each row (or column) needs to have only TWO possible spots, as long as each row (or column) corresponds with at least 2 spots within the other 2 rows (or columns), and the corresponding spots do not necessarily have to be in the same row or column.

i got to the same stage at Mark at 5:42. it took me 20 minutes to solve from there as i didn't see the obvious x wing, and instead, did swordfishes on 6's and 7's which helped eliminate a few squares, and made some pretty colours in the box, but didn't actually get me anywhere productive. i thought 4's were useless, and only when i was finished with my pretty 6's and 7's did i check for x wing and swordfish's for 4's, and the puzzle was done in under 2 min's once i saw it. This video is really useful in showing to me how much faster i could have solved it if i look at the given numbers and look for those patterns directly!

Thanks for this video. It's much clearer to me than the app. I wish the app instructions had some sort of way to reduce some of the visual clutter. With everything pencil marked in it gets confusing.

Just started sudoku little less than a month ago. I do little booklets but I like watching this channel for the ones with interesting restrictions and less digits.
So apparently I’ve been working these x wing and swordfish things out without pencil markings or any kind of coloring, and it’s been really hard on my brain lol.. probably a good mental workout, but this video certainly helped me organize the stuff in my head better.. might eventually start using a pencil and/or coloring for some of the incredibly difficult sudoku puzzles in my book. Otherwise I’m going to keep staring at puzzles half done for about 2 hours before I crack through one digit that pulls me a bit closer to the end.
Thanks for the video as always!!

I am so happy I've found CTC, the joy in solving those puzzles showed to me the beauty in Sudoku. It dragged me in and purchased so far only Classic Sudoku app on Android and damn, even greenie amateur like me can see the difference between computer made Sudoku and crafted one. It's so good and pleasant. I am grateful for possibility to see ALL of the mistakes. This helps me confirm if my logic and way I solve is correct and if not I keep going until I find reason why I was wrong.
Also solve of this particular Sudoku by Sam also helped me understand better not only how those techniques actually looks but how to use them.
    I simply Thank CTC team

This puzzle works! At 16:12 I managed to spot yet another X-wing in rows 1 and 2 for the 8ths (assisted by the 68 pair in box 6). This made me able to spot where the 8 in box 2 should go.

I'd never watched anyone solve a Sudoku before or give names to the patterns that appear - I wouldn't have thought a Jellyfish would be helpful but it must be if it has a name! Unfortunately I didn't see one of the swordfish patterns, but a comment here pointed it out. Thanks for posting these and keep them coming - they are fabulous!!

I _understand_ x-wings and swordfishes, I'm just rubbish at spotting them. Even after it was clearly telegraphed in the title that x-wings would be the key to this puzzle it took me a painfully long time to find them.

It would help to see if the software would automatically highlight a number (and any pencil marks for that number). One of the first Sudoku apps we used would do that.

An excellent puzzle from Sam. As you say .. good teaching and practice material. I did it twice, just for practice. More please. On a side note, I do not live in UK, but I managed to find some videos of Sam on Countdown. Tremendous performances. It would be a treat to see Sam go head-to-head with Mark on a cryptic! (Wishing for the moon, I know!).

Saw the title, immediately tried the solve, 21:48. Pretty happy with it, though I didn't spot the swordfish, I did it with with a 4-8-9 triple in the lower left corner. I did, however, find a couple of X-Wings which made me happy :) they're usually not easy for me to spot.

Ah, I needed that breakdown of how to see it! I started to see some, but that gave a lot more clarity. 27:29 after stopping midway through to get help on the first 2 X-Wings. I also spotted the swordfish earlier, but I wasn't sure if it was one, so now I know how to see that better, too!

25:54. Solved by identifying three X-Wings and finally a Swordfish on the 9s to crack the puzzle open. As this seemed difficult but approachable, I finally gave one puzzle a try

After having read up, and watched a few films, on x-wings and swordfishes I think I finally get it. Part of their effect is on the squares that are the x-wings/swordfishes themselves, and partly as a negative constraint. Time to get back to work.

  • @silvereyes92
    @silvereyes92 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have found another X-Wing while following. Around the 10:30 mark where you show the x-wing with the 8's, look at the middle box. Now the 8's can only be in the squares directly below 1, which creates another X-wing with the 8's in the middle left box. That puts the 8 in the middle-right box to the top left, and 6 below that, and so on. Thats how I proceeded without seeing the 9's X-wing :)

Nice puzzle! I did it in 38:14 using one X-wing on 4, a swordfish on 7, the 4-column equivalent of swordfish/X-wing on 8, and finally a very nice swordfish on 9.

While I already understood X-Wings, it is always good to see reinforcing lessons. What I found most interesting was the swordfish. That was my first time to see one in practice and learn the concepts behind it. I would love to see more on these techniques.

I recommend Simon's video "how not to cheat at sudoku" with the puzzle called Tattooine Sunset. That's what helped me to understand a swordfish.
