  • ‪@MFEGoingDeep‬ finally made the trip to East Grand Lake to explore the infamous Deep hole, which if you icefish in Maine you’ve most likely at least heard of it. The amount of alewives swimming around certainly was eye opening to realize just how much feed the fish have available to them down there. We encounter a really nice sized Lake trout that busts into a group of alewives then I was able to follow it for a couple minutes and get some closer looks. We follow that up with another Lake trout I was able to catch on a tip up with some under the ice footage at the hole coming up and then being released to swim back down to the depths. Another fun adventure in the books!

Great footage sir! The Salmon size certainly is bigger in Sebago since the alewives have been running. I think that may explain the size of fish caught back in the 1920s and 30s. Ive seen old fish mounted on the walls in camps that were enormous compared to today. I used to think it was because of fishing pressure back then. Now Im not sure...Keep the vids coming!!

Well one thing that always makes a big difference is having that feed available! Now I’ve always heard that smelt are more nutritious for the game fish than alewives but maybe they can make up for it with the extra quantity, definitely seems to be available!

From the head-on view of your drone, it could be interpreted as something like a turtle. I’m surprised the fish don’t seem to be afraid of it if they even notice it at all. Seeing that trout come in among the alewives made me immediately think of a shark in a school of alewives in the ocean. Interesting stuff. Thanks.

Fishes are super interested in that drone , they always come along and check it out 😅

They don’t seem to mind it as long as it isn’t making sudden fast movements, usually going slow they’re all good. That’s exactly what I thought too about a shark in the ocean that’s why I did a short clip of that with the jaws theme 😂 seemed to work!

Lol 😂 well if it happens again mark the hole and let me know I’ll put the claw attachment on this thing and grab it off the bottom!

Why does it say the temp is 121 degrees

😂 I was waiting for someone to notice that! I’m honestly not sure. My guess is the temperature display’s programming doesn’t go below 32° for water temp as it would be frozen, so as the drone first heads down to the bottom you’ll see the temp change from 32 to the other number and down a couple more degrees. It was really cold so not sure if that affected the temperature sensor on the unit but it’s almost like it goes to 32 then back to the top of its temperature range to compensate for a number it’s trying to display for below 32°. Not sure if that makes any sense but I noticed it do that a couple times last winter and then once it was back in warmer temps in the spring it was fine.
