To be fair, this song is a very deep cut - extremely autobiographical in straightforward and subtextual content and themes throughout both her Folklore and Evermore albums. Impossible for new listeners and for those unfamiliar with the autobiography explored in both projects, regardless of endless re-listens. Don’t know why this pice was suggested at this point of your Taylor journey. Love your candid feedback on the male vocals too. Awesome one again.

This is my interpretation. First verse is November and she’s been in a deep depression, something has happened. She replays her steps in her mind wondering what went wrong, at what point did it all go wrong and can’t see the pain every getting better.
Verse 2. It’s progressed. It’s December and she keeps replaying the events in her mind and she just can’t get past what happened. And now she’s feeling “unmoored”. The term means a ship or boat that is no longer anchored. The boat is unmoored and rocking aimlessly in the waves, not in control. Completely unmoored in a storm. Boats that are unmoored in a storm, will wreck or sink. Being tossed all around, chaos, that is what her feeling unmoored means.
The bridge. The tempo increases and its abrupt like you said. It’s meant to be shocking. It mirrors the anxiety and chaos happening to her being unmoored, he sings of the waves and being tossed. She comes in being shipwrecked at that point and going to sink, but there was a crack of light that gave her hope. That was someone who was there for her, helping her pull out of the insurmountable depression. He was there. And when she was able to come out of it, she realized he was there for her when she says “you were there”.
Final chorus. She’s better, has hope again, and knows the pain will NOT be forever.
These lyrics mirror her depression from 2016 and trying to come out of that. The second meaning is also the chaos and not in control of what will happen with the 2020 election.

I get you because I felt the same on the couple listens.
However once i got the meaning i really started to like it (based what I interpreted the song as.)
She starts out extremely depressed and wrapped in her own thoughts, possibly even feeling suicidal.
He comes in and disrupts her life and causes changes to her thought process.
The disruption and the thought of him is enough to pull her out it.
So the song lyrics change from "this pain would be evermore" to...
    "the pain wouldn't be evermore."
I interpret the song in 2 ways that separate from her personal story although it does have that interpretation too.
my first is the one describe above about mental health.
the second is about politics, the world and dealing with events in 2020. the violence of the dog days(summer 2020, disease, shut-downs, restrictions, racial issues brought to the forefront (only a psycho could watch video without feeling pain), protests, anti-protests, and even an even worse winter to come) leading to feeling depressed and angry and wondering if we can all catch a break. then leaning on each other to pull us thru and science comes up with a way to save from the disease art as well. ended 2020 feeling slightly hopeful... go figure...
Many of her songs have the melody match the feeling of the song lyrics (unlike Forever Winter where she does the opposite). if you ever do the song "closure", it is the same idea. there is a chaotic instrumental in the background throughout the song. it is off putting at first but then you realize that is the point. someone wants to get closure to make themselves feel better at her expensive and she is like you can just **** off. she is at peace on surface but underneath unsettled and seething. also the instrumental sounds like a broken machine which also a dig at her old label.

That puts the song in a whole different perspective for me now. I looked at him as messing the song up but his intended purpose was to intrude in her life that’s really fire

@@freemanreacts I felt exactly the same way, because that melody is so so perfect. But for the strength of the song its needed. The more you listen to it, the more the harmonies make sense.
Love your reactions, they are so raw :)

@@freemanreacts You will find Taylor uses all aspects of the song to tell her story: the music, her voice, and of course the lyrics. I have really enjoyed your reactions to Taylor and she has actually been a story teller her entire career. One of the best songs she ever wrote, in my opinion, was her 10 min. version of “All Too Well” back in 2012. There is a short film, kind of like a music video with Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, of this song that is absolutely genius! If you haven’t already watched it yet, then I definitely recommend it.

To me, this about a low period or seasonal depression. The relationship she’s in was affected by it too.

I laughed out loud when you said Bon Iver's part was yucky and disturbed your soul because the tempo change also fucked with me, it took a long time to be able to listen to this song without being bothered by it, and even now I have to brace for it lol. I love everything before and after it so it's worth it but oh my god it's a mindfuck

This is one of my all time favourites but I love that you said you didn't like it and didn't cater to the fandom. Not everyone can like everything.

hey man there's no shame in not understanding her songs or any other artist's, it honestly took me quite some time to get the hidden meaning of this one too, there's an english teacher (her channel is English Teacher KP) that analyses her songs if you wanna check it out. (although i would love to see your reaction to her videos, they can be 20+ minutes so maybe just check them out on your own time)

I understand your first reaction to this. On the first few listens the bridge with Bon Iver felt dissonant and off putting. But as I got to understand the song and the symbolism of “being unmoored”, “out on waves being tossed”, “when I was ship wrecked”, I realized that bridge represented Taylor reaching out for help during a turbulent time (hence the tempo change in the bridge) from where she was brought back to shore. After which she realizes the pain would not be for evermore.
