So fun fact! I ended up buying my first two Gundams! When they come in I'll do a building stream :D I also got a tool kit and help from a friend who builds them. I got two from Gundam The Witch from Mercury ^u^ I'm so excited! You can see my reaction to episode 0 on my patreon right now.
You should watch 86 (eighty six) I highly recommend giving it a watch same Music composer from attack on titan and and have attack on titan themes and Gundam too highly recommended
Gundam is a series spanning over 40 years. Think Star Wars. That's the kind of impact this long series with a lot of different stories, sometimes not in the same universe, has. A lot of voice actors got into voice acting due to Gundam, a lot of animators got into animating due to Gundam. There's people who quote characters from the series as if they were famous historic figures. It is MASSIVE.
I mean, "brown girl love interest" was there all the way back in 1979 in the original.... Original creator of Gundam was, and still is, a VERY liberal minded person, who set out to create a series that's more mature, at an age where anime was seen as only for kids (yes that sentiment existed, even for anime), and really helped kickstarted this 40+ year old whole franchise.
As someone who, depending on the day of the week, considers Gundam Victory his favorite entry in the franchise, that might very well be the funniest thing I've heard in a while.
People usually thinks Gundam is about just giant robots fight each other but, it usually highly focused on human dramas and suspenseful political drama
The little ball thing is called a Haro, and it's the mascot of the franchise! They've got a TON of Haro toys, including ones that talk and move around.
1. Beam Sabers (the laser swords) are standard issue on most mobile suits. 2. Yes. The ZZ Gundam consists of three ships, and they all combine into one beast of a gundam. 3. The blonde guy with the shades is named Char. Yes, you will see him a lot, and he's used as a template for other characters as the franchise goes on. 4. Do not be fooled by the intro. Victory Gundam will tear your heart out and smash it into a red stain. 5. Loran Cehack (The main character of Turn A Gundam) is a dude. He just crossdresses to do spy stuff. 6. Those things in the backs of the characters in Iron Blooded Orphans are part of a survey that let them control their mobile suits better than anyone who don't have them. The more spikes, the better the control. 7. Any Gundam series with the "Build" title revolves around Gundam model kits. And yes. It's basically a VR video game where you pilot your custom-made gundam or other mobile suit from the Gundam series.
The spike things are called alaya vijnana there are used for combat in the calamity war if you watch the series of iron blooded orphans you will understand more about it
The man who made Turn A wanted a female lead and the studio said no and to spite them he made the lead as close to female looking as he could get without getting in trouble.
@@xianderthest8014That was debunked multiple times already, early concept art always shows Loran as a male and never in the records was found anything that hints he was supposed to be female. Not only that but Tomino was given complete creative control over Turn A and the studio never interfere heavily with the production.
@@CoracaoAcidental98 Many things in tv production are not put into records dumbass, and the idea for a series will predate concept art by a good margin. Especially official concept art.
1:30 The Origin is the prequel to the original series, shows "how did we get here" And since it's earlier it's all the prototypes and early versions. 13:15 a chronologically earlier series (that got takedown) is 08th ms series 27:20 Gundam Breaker Online is a Gundam mobile game Price range will depend on the "Grade" you choose. High: standard, affordable, pre colored, beginner friendly. Real: Higher details, more flexibility. Master: Bigger, more complex. Perfect: Biggest, most expensive, challenging build.
Speaking of GBO, there is also the anime mini-series that came out, tying in with the Breaker 3 game. Ironically enough is one of the instances where we see that game’s protag.
Yeah Origin is just a different take on 0079 and shouldn’t be watched as a prequel as it contradicts a bunch of stuff and has different characterisations
Gundam is really interesting as a long-running franchise because besides the mainline series, it often branches off into alternate timelines for new series which are less intimidating for newcomers and allows it to explore familiar tropes from different angles. For example, something like Build Fighters doubles down on just being fun and the 'We just want to sell toys' thing while Turn A is borderline experimental.
Unfortunate that the playlist didn't have the rest of the Gundam 00 OP's, two of them are my absolute favorite Gundam openers (and two of my favorite ED's all time). I'd definitely recommend checking them out.
i came to check the comments for this exactly, all the good Gundam 00 OP's were skipped. sitting here like how the hell you gotta skip gundam 00 for gundam age. 00 is one of the best and put in the preteens in middle school ones >_>
Though I think it's quite fair to say that watching it probably still feels better than director did when he was forced to make the series more or less against his will in the first place...
You will like Gundam Witch from Mercury. Make sure to watch episode zero prologue! That alone is worth a watch. Witch from Mercury is stand alone too, so anyone can try it without needing to see anything else. Also, idk if you just cut it out but you only watched the fourth opening of Gundam OO which is also a stand alone show. That one uses real world politics projected into the 24th century. Lol, commenting while watching an hour long video to show my Gundam hype. Build Fighters is actually one of the best and she should totally watch it and Try Fighters. The shows have tons of easter eggs to every Gundam that came before but you don't need to know anything to enjoy it. You will in fact learn a lot about the older stuff as they have Gundams from various shows fighting eachother.
man, the "duel" stuff really turned me off. imagine living in a futuristic mecha world with duels, gundam was always best in politics and war imo. is there anything equivalent to gundam thunderbolt? that was really great
@@aSSGoblin1488 thats why Witch from Mercury is the most causal friendly Gundam ever its easier to digest becuase its set on a high school/teen troupe if you want like Thunderbolt just watch UC Gundam series
31:48 G Gundam is probably the most wild trip of the Gundam series. It exists in its own continuity, and the levels of sheer ham and cheese get to near JoJo levels. As for the plot, it surrounds a competitive fight to determine who's in control of Earth, and every country who could afford it has their own unique Gundam.
@@UrLeingod With a mentor character who may well be the only character who's handicapped by piloting a Gundam instead of using his own body as a weapon.
old gundam fan here, glad you're showing an interest in this, i recommend gundam Seed and Iron Blooded Orphans as stand alone series after Witch from Mercury. I've seen most of these and spent many an hour building the model kits, which i also recommend giving a shot, most standard kits are around the $15-$22 mark
@@Ashterin honestly, if you’re gonna put the commitment to watch seed I’d just watch the original gundam, it definitely aged pretty well considering what could’ve been
The little ball thing is Haro he is the Gundam franchise mascot and HE IS ADORABLE!!!!!! The creator has the fan given nickname of “Kill’em All” because a lot of people die in the ones he works on.
A WItch From Mercury and Iron Blooded Orphans are great ones to start with, if you ever want to get into Gundam. Self contained storylines, with some interesting characters and great animation.
It was actually Iron Blooded Orphans that got me into Gundam. When I then started to ask questions about it to my friends, they mentioned UC, which i had no idea what it was. They explained it, I searched it and bam, now I know about the UC and such.
@@redfire1186 First one I ever saw was the Endless Waltz movie, my cousin showed it to me back when it first came out when we were kids. Had no clue what was going on, but I liked the fights. Didn't watch anything Gundam (or anime in general) for well over a decade until IBO came out, and that one really clicked for me.
@@hunterhawk862 My problem with Wing is that it reuses a TON of the animations for the fight scenes. It really stands out when you watch several episodes in one sitting.
Fun fact Loran, the brown boy in Turn A's OP, is a male. They do love to put him in dresses through the show though, and even have some characters confuse him for a woman. And another fun fact, the way you say Turn A Gundam is by reading it by pronouncing the A. So its not "Turn a Gundam" but Turn "A" Gundam.
I've really been loving Witch From Mercury, it's the show that finally got me into Gundam. Fun fact: the (lead?) writer for Gundam Witch is the *same one* as for Code Geasss! He also did the novelizations of Revolutionary Girl Utena, and there's a lot of DNA from that show in this story too.
And since you asked near the end of the video: they've been slowly releasing kits from the new series, usually 1 or 2 new ones a month. These are all 1/144 scale ones, labeled as "High Grade" (HG), and they tend to be between $15-25. There's been a bit of a shortage in Gunpla over the last couple of years though (lower production + high demand + they need to be imported from Japan), and these new kits are absolutely flying off the shelves, so they might end up being a little pricier when all is said and done. There's also going to be bigger and more expensive kits of *some* of the Mobile Suits from the show too, but those release nowhere near as frequently. The HG line is pretty much the bread and butter one, and you can expect that most of the mechs in the show will get an HG kit at some point. All you really need to build them is a pair of clippers to snip the parts out of the plastic frames they come on, and maybe something to sand down any nub marks left behind. From there you can get into adding more detail if you want to, like by drawing darker accent/panel lines on. It's like doing makeup but on plastic robots.
Did mention the scale compared to "how they're supposed to be" but not the actual size the model ends up being IRL: HG kits are usually about ~6 inches/~15 centimeters tall.
Don't sleep on the Build series, granted it's all one giant commercial to sell the model kits, but it's also a huge love letter to the fans of Gundam as a whole.
I got into Gundam about a year or so ago and never looked back. Main points to take away are that the franchise has been going since 1979, there is the main universe that the first Gundam began called the universal century. This means for some series you will need to have watched specific ones to view it in the correct order but that only applies to universal century shows. All other series like wing and witch from mercury take place in their own universe so don't require any knowledge of other series to understand them. A great place to view a load of series for free is the gundaminfo TH-cam channel where they will just upload full seasons of shows for a few months.
Iron Blooded Orphans was the first time i'd sat down and watched something Gundam. i was blown away. it was also one of the *first* anime i'd ever seen in full. an absolute A+ show, with a truly *W* story
@@MartialEmperor6344 is it sad or bad? I can handle a sad ending but if it's bad(I mean badly written) I don't want to waste my time. I'm 5 episodes in and too commited yet
Gundam Build Fighters was great! Was a fun Gundam show with tons of great fan service for Gundam fans. I’d actually recommend it. Just a genuinely fun and enjoyable series
As a longtime Gundam nut (since Gundam Wing back in the early 2000s), it always warms my heart to see someone new get into Gundam and enjoy the music and animation. You have brightened this "old" man's soul today 😂
Gundam is insane. You go from mobile suits shooting bullets and shoving each other off cliffs in the Original show to transforming mobile suits and psychic technology in Zeta, ZZ and CCA to mobile suits being able to transcend time and space in Unicorn, NT and Late UC timeline. The series makes it's money on model kits and they're extremely fun and addictive.
Turn A comes from the mathematical term "for all X belonging to a particular universe" and then you add the parameters on a formula. Tomino(creator) did that because the anime literally took under its's umbrella ALL of the series made up to that point, he did that to sort of say, This universe started with me and it will end on my terms. So no matter what ever happens in gundam, all the roads lead to TURN A. Also the anime feels like a gibli movie
29:34 Victory Gundam is weird like that. It has multiple PoC characters and a much larger female cast then any other Gundam before.............BUT it was also where the creator was going through some REAL person problems which manifested in like 90% of those female characters dieing horribly and showing them like....basically nude. This show and Space Runaway Ideon is why he's known as "Kill'em all Tomino".
The only thing missing is this doesn't have the opening from the current series, Witch From Mercury. Which I can best describe as Utena meets The Tempest with giant robots. You'd LOVE IT! And I see from your description that you're already checking it out! I'll have to take a gander at that.
No. She missed a *lot* of OPs thanks to the strict copyright for Gundam OPs & EDs on YT. If she really want to react to all Gundam OPs, she need to committ and do her research to get all those OPs outside YT. But she's just a casual reactor so it's okay.
As a big Gundam fan because of my father. And a custom Gunpla figure maker (Gunpla is Gundam Plastic Models) I love it when people watch and enjoy Gundam. Thanks for the reaction!
I ended up watching gundam the witch from mercury after and omg I FLIPPING LOVED IT! I’m starting iron blood orphans on Patreon soon too. I never knew how much I could like gundam 💖 I’m building my first two sets as well closer to when season 2 comes out for WFM
I love your reaction to this, I grew up with Gundam Wing and since seen almost all the ones released in English, still have some to watch, but my favorite is a tie between Gundam 00 and G-Gundam, overall really happy to see you reacting to these great openings :)
1:00:00 Gundam has always been a high-budget toy commercial, but Build isn't even trying to hide it behind the plot of War and Peace anymore. How you decide to feel about that is up to you.
That wasn't blood you saw. That was red paint cuz is was a mach battle to test the new orange mech called the Powered GM. The reason why Mikazuki (the kid) was over Orga's (dark dilf) shoulder is because pushing the Gundam Barbatos to it's limits took away his feeling in his right arm, leg, and eye. The only time he has full motor function is when he is hooked up to the Gundam again. The little ball is called a Haro, he appears in a lot of Gundam shows. He'a a mascot for the franchise.
1:00:16 The Build series take place in a Universe where Gundam is a popular anime franchise. In that Universe, people can use their Gundam plastic Models, also call Gunpla, to play a game called Gundam fight. In Gundam fight, they place their gundam models in a special arena which then emits particle that allows the toys to move and be remontly piloted by the players.
Just so you know, after watching Witch of Mercury the Happy Birthday song will never be the same ever again. Also the last opening from Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise is one of the best.
So at 23:26, that's Gundam ZZ ("Double Zeta"). It flies in two separate parts, the upper body, which I think is called the Wave Rider (the same as Zeta Gundam). The lower half is called a Nutter, if I remember right lol. Also, the "little ball thingy, with the ears!" is called a Haro. You can buy kits of them as well! There's even special edition ones. And your favorite (watching as I write) at 25:00 is Gundam Unicorn. That show gave us some of the nicest designs. Unicorn Gundam, Banshee Gundam, Phenex Gundam, Sinanju, Kshatriya... Some great choices. Even the Stark Jegan.
As a short spoilerless summary of the different universes/timelines: Everything from the start of the video until Victory: Main UC (Universal Century) Gundam timeline. There are even a couple things missing like War in the Pocket or F91, but that's because they were movies more than series. Mobile Fighter G Gundam: Gundam but genre shifted into a martial arts tournament anime. New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Famously the most recognized old Gundam west-side due to featuring in Toonami, as well as being well self-contained as a single series and a movie. Although the tone is serious, you can see some campiness in the concepts above UC Gundam norm. After War Gundam X: Considerably the underdog of early Gundam, run length cut down due to unpopularity at the time, but it was more a sign of trend shifting than actual issue with the series. ∀ Gundam: Yes, that's what the "Turn A" is. An oddball series, some may recommend watching it only after you're deep in the Gundam rabbithole, for reasons. It features an interesting setting clash between high-tech and 20th century times. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED/Destiny: Considerably the start of modern Gundam, specially marked for the use of digital coloring over traditional. Also considerably one of the most controversially received. Features many parallels with the first Gundam, and similarly does its sequel SEED Destiny with Zeta Gundam. Mobile Suit Gundam 00: First Gundam to be animated in HD, to start its dub before the JP airing ended, and to have its run properly divided in seasons. Could be considered to follow a similar spirit to Wing, with its team of protagonists and the situation they're in. It even has a movie as well! Mobile Suit Gundam AGE: A series spanning a century, a lot is compressed to be told in a normal series runtime. It can be seen as a tribute to previous Gundam series in spirit. Gundam Build Fighters/Try/Divers/Re:RISE : A departure from the usual planetary conflict stories of the franchise, Build Fighters is more akin to a merch-based competition anime like Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade, Bakugan, etc. Alongside the new designs, it features many of the mobile suits from previous Gundam series, as well as new variations of them. Spot-on interpretations over the settings on these, btw. Gundam Reconguista in G: A return to more traditional Gundam storytelling, spiritually similar to Turn A Gundam. It is also the shortest 'real' Gundam series, discounting movies re-cut into series and the two Build series. Mobile Suit Gundam IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS: As noted, it is more aesthetically themed after medieval combat compared to other series' modern-to-space warfare. Competes for darkest themes with some of the UC Gundam entries. Of course, as mentioned before with UC there's still a good number of titles not represented here since they're in OVAs/movies/ONAs/etc. Along that, a good number of series also have compilation movies if you want shorter versions of the stories, though many tend to swear by just watching the original full series.
1:01:25 this anime performed EXTREMELY well. The anime is about gunpla models, Gundam Plastic Models. Its not set in the gundam universe but sorta set in our world, cause you can buy gunpla kits in real life to build your favorite suit. In this series they have a system that allows them to move them and fight with them. This series did really well because it was a love letter to fans who both enjoyed gundam and building the model kits and really boosted it to another level, to a point where the gunpla series became its own thing aside from the gundam series. As you saw, Gundam Build Fighters started it all which was where they built their gunplas and played with them on these stages physically, then in Build Divers, it moved onto a digital setting where they upload their gunpla to a game, where they also have avatars and whatnot.
Quick break down on the mechs, all the mechs are called mobile suits, a gundam is a type mobile suit that is special for one reason or another Also, not all gundam series are part of one timeline, there are alternative timelines Edit: quick recommendation, iron blooded orphans is goated, and also don't forget to watch the prolog episode for witch from mercury, also, gundam is not a happy show, don't be fooled like I was
32:05 Mobile Fighter G Gundam took a break from the Universal Century timeline and set it into the Future Century alternate universe, and it swith the formula for Gundam from the real robot genre to the super robot genre, harkening back to the old Mazinger series (in fact, Yasuhiro Imagawa, who directed Shin Mazinger Z, directed G Gundam). See, original creator and director for the Gundam series, Yoshiyuki Tomino, had become burnt out after finishing Victory Gundam and took a 15-year hiatus from Gundan (he wouldn't return until he directed Reconguista in G, but he _did_ work on the story for Stardust Memory), but Sunrise wanted to keep the franchise going, so they started alternate timelines and got new directors for each one.
Netflix has the movie trilogy compilation of the original 1979 anime, which is usually a decent place to start--cuts out all the filler and contains all the info needed for later installments.
i dont know if it was cut or something but you missed most of gundam 00's openings and some ova's. also you have to listen to chain by back-on . if you like them in those openings then you'll love this song.
Man, I remember watching build fighters and divers every morning before going to the uni, Gundam info usually streamed them live on their TH-cam channel, full subbed and shit, it was really amazing to tag along with fans of all over the world, and going on to the last episodes, there would always be like 20k+ people watching it live on youtube, simply amazing.
51:00 Gundam Seed Destiny was a new series with a new generation of characters, but set in the same spinoff timeline as Gundam Seed. You can think of it like a time-skip sequel, where the events of Seed are cannon to Seed Destiny.
Oh dang... you diving into my neck of the woods! I hope you enjoy it. Best way I can describe the Gundam series is Space Soap Opera... at least the early ones. The later ones are more action oriented with relatable real world issues.
13:00 so Gundam with Beam Saber (all federation MS have Beam Sabers, Gundams usually have 2) and huge shield... also carries a nuclear warhead .. and the shield is so large because it carries a lot of the Gundam GP-02's cooling system
31:50 I got goosebumps when I heard G Gundam theme, thats my childhood right there 🤩its so dark when I watched it as a kid. Also the way they piloted the gundam is so much different from other gundam series. Im gonna be honest, this series introduced me to some "things" that Im not supposed to know as a kid😂
if we talk about the opening of gundam age, the main characters there are members of the same family grandson son and grandfather only in reverse order in the second and third opening you can first see an adult man with green oxen and in the third and fourth stronika is the main character of the first opening
“The Origin" and the subsequent ones that start with "UC" can be counted as Gundam works in the UC timeline, as well as the true story of Gundam, they are more about politics and war and they are extremely profound and beautiful works, but because of the time they were created it is difficult to start from the beginning. But since the origin is a recently created work, it is also a good place to start "Seed" and "00" are also a good starting point. “Seed” is also my Gundam enlightenment. They both have their own timelines, so it's very easy to understand the story. They are not as profound as UC story, but more in pursuit of the emotional expression of the characters. If you prefer romance, there's nothing wrong with “Seed” as a starting point👍
I don’t think I’d recommend Origin as a good starting place personally. You get much more out of it if you’ve at the bare minimum watched through 0079. I do think 00, IBO, and TWFM make much better starting places as “newer” entries that have both high quality animation and stories.
The 1st video you've watched tells the origins of how the war started. The original Gundam anime aired in 1979. The Origin that aired on 2019 is a prelude to that original series and where the main character of The Origin shows his story before turning into the main antagonist of the 79 anime.
So to clear up any confusion you may have, these openings go by timelines/universes in chronological order. Universal Century: Gundam the Origin- UC0068-UC0079 Mobile suit Gundam-UC0079 8th MS team-UC0079 Stardust Memory-UC0083 Zeta Gundam-UC0087 ZZ Gundam-UC0088 Gundam Unicorn-UC0096 Victory Gundam-UC0153 Alternate Universes: Future Century: G Gundam After War: Gundam X After Colony: Gundam Wing Correct Century: Turn A Gundam Cosmic Era: Gundam Seed Gundam Seed Destiny Anno Domini Gundam 00 Advanced Genration: Gundam Age Build Fighters: Gundam Build Fighters Gundam Build Fighters Try Regild Century (much after UC): G Reco Post Disaster: Iron Blooded Orphans Build Divers: Gundam Build Divers Gundam Build Divers ReRise Gundam Breaker: Gundam Breaker Battlogue Ad Stella: Witch From Mercury
G Gundam is fucking wild, it's so out of character for Gundam and yet it works flawlessly. It's like wacky, hammy, bombastic and basically anything from that show is a recurring meme in the community, but it's somehow executed so damn well. Also 08th MS Team is my personal favorite because the fact that it's all from the perspective of common soldiers and civilians makes the stakes feel much higher when there's danger. It's basically the vietnam war with mechs. And if you liked these I think you'd also love Macross. Much like Gundam, it's been around for many decades, has cool mecha, has romance in most of them, and is absolutely full of banger tunes. Difference is that while Gundam is (usually) more focused on politics and such, Macross always revolves around the music in one way or another, though the plot itself varies. It also basically made transforming robot planes two years before Transformers was made. Highly recommended.
Gundam Wing was one of my first experiences in anime and was a great influence for me. It still has a special place in my heart❤. I also met the voice actor for Duo (guy with the braid, pilots the Gundam with the scythe), Scott McNeil at an Anime convention. The man gave awesome hugs!
I know its late but the one you see "0079, 0083, and 0096" those are the Universal Century year on the Universal Century Timeline (aka, the original gundam series before they make another timelines of other gundam series)
Gundam Build Fighters is SO good. It was my personal introduction to the franchise, even if it's more laid back and low-stakes by nature than most every other series (or perhaps BECAUSE it is), it really got me into Gundam. Definitely worth a watch.
Its crazy to think that a show that basically is just Gunpla propaganda ended up being so good. Try was kind of a step down from Build Fighters, but still enjoyable nonetheless.
@@GamersBlogX I enjoyed the Build series just from the machine designs and fights alone. Not to mention all of the references and cameos. I just sat back and enjoyed the ride without really looking for reasons to complain or pick it apart.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing is what I grew up on. The series that came out in 96. I watched that as a kid from episode 1 until that series ended. I watched it side by side with Pokemon, Digimon, Sailor Moon, Ronin Warriors and Dragon Ball/Ball Z. In my opinion it is the best!! Mobile Suits Sandrock and Deathscythe for the WIN!!!
Also you missed a lot of the gundam 00 openings, which is probably up there of gundam shows I would recommend for a beginner, also gundam origin is a prequel to the original gundam series which centers around Char Aznable the antagonist/rival for the og gundam, also definitely recommend the gundam build series so to explain the build series gundam made model kits called gunpla(gundam plastic models) which is very popular even today so they thought they would make an anime about it where people customize gunpla and bring them to a virtual space or bring them to life to fight in arenas to add more to the fun building aspect of gunpla, and just recently on the AX2022 gundam panel they had a couple players try out a real life version of it although its still in its beta stages since scanning technology isn't that advanced but its getting there
So Gundam: The Origin was originally a modern manga retelling of the original series, but with some parts exploring the time before the start of the original 1979 anime thrown in. Then they made it into a movie series exploring the backstory of the main rival, Char Aznable. They then turned the movie series into a show. It's actually a great hopping-on point to get into the "main" timeline of the show, the Universal Century. And if you like series with political intrigue, Gundam is THE classic political anime. Ever since the very, very first one in 1979, there's so much political maneuvering, backstabbing, all sorts of crazy stuff. It was SOOOOO ahead of its time, and the story still holds up if you can get past the dated animation.
I'm struggling to understand what exactly you mean by "dated animation". There's been many shows that have come out since that don't look nearly as good. Maybe the version I saw was cleaned up a bit, but the animation itself looks fine. It's not like it was Speed Racer/Mach Go Go Go levels of cheap.
@@astralman Well did you watch the show version or the movie compilations? The compilations had some touch ups. Also Zeta which came out just a few years later looked waaaaaaay better for comparison.
@@JackgarPrime I watched the English dub of the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. I remembered the voices being acceptable when I caught episodes of it on tv years ago, so I watched it from beginning to end on streaming. Maybe it's because I saw some really low budget Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid that managed to stick in my memory, but it doesn't bother me.
What's funny in the Gundam Build Fighters series is that there is a special particle that interacts with the plastic of the model kits, and they can pilot the kits that they built and the particles mimic the effects of thrusters, beam weapons and sabers, and other types of weapons along with movement.
The neat thing about Gundam AGE is that it's a generational story. The green-haired kid in AGE Op1 is the green-haired dude with the sick mustache at the end of Op2 (56:20) and so-on.
Gundam is organized along a few different timelines, so it’s not necessary to watch them all if you don’t want to. If you’re planning on watching through A Witch from Mercury specifically, then you should know it’s fairly self contained. You’ll do fine if you start there!
31:46 btw the Mobile Fighter G Gundam theme is not about a war,but a Martial Arts theme, because in the story itself, the only way to change the war is to make a tournament of Gundam Fight, the winner can rule the entire country and colony for 4 years
G Gundam was the first AU and they sure went all in on being an AU. A lot of people don't seem to like Gundam Age. I don't know what its popularity was like in Japan. I don't remember disliking it myself, and it has a multi-generational story (the green haired baby is in all four openings, at different stages of his life), which is something I really like in fiction! I have to rewatch it one of these days and see how it holds up. But anyway, that multiple generations aspect might be why it got so many openings, because the cast changed a lot.
My problem with AGE is that it never really committed to anything. Long story short, they should have honestly gone full on Victory with this show because as is, it’s passable at best. For the Flit arc, they should have leaned more into the devastation caused by the Vega when they were an unknown entity. For Asemu’s arc they should have done more with Asemu and Zeheart’s relationship, maybe have Zeheart defect and join Asemu when he became a pirate. As for Kio’s arc…Kio shouldn’t have had a full on arc. He should have been a secondary protagonist while the focus stayed on Flit and Asemu. It’s a moot point as this obviously didn’t happen but still, as is, AGE doesn’t know what it wants to be and I think it suffers because of it. It’s a shame that it came right after 00.
Okay, I know I'm commenting on an old video, but Gundam is a neat franchise with *a ton* going on under the hood, so here's some random notes as they pop into my head: Re: bleeding robots -- Gundam is a series, ultimately, about the atrocities of warfare, and uses the mobile suits to represent different aspects of that theme. Often, the mobile suits are representative of the pilots' bodies, and when that particular aspect is being pushed, you'll sometimes see red-brown oil or blood-red flames coming out of the suits when they sustain damage. In those cases, it isn't literally blood, it's just a visual representation. Other times, especially in later series, you'll see blood shooting out of the cockpit as a suit is crushed or stabbed. Those ones are just blood. The little ball thing is series mascot Haro. Re: little girl fighting in space -- the original 1979 series was very interested, thematically, in demonstrating that the old create wars and the young suffer in them. In fact... okay, look: Gundam's main canon is the Universal Century timeline, which started with the 1979 series depicting a bloody war between the Earth Federation and the space-colony-based Principality of Zeon. In first Gundam, Zeon is depicted as pretty blatantly villainous, starting the war by dropping a space colony on earth and killing something like half the population. Their uniforms and mech designs are heavily influenced by the Axis powers of WW2. Gundam's direct sequel, Zeta Gundam, has a lot more influences of the war in Vietnam, and the protagonists are a terrorist group fighting against the Earth Federation's tyrannical special division, The Titans. Gundam and Zeta have different main characters, but the big picture thing they have in common is that they are teenagers who wind up fighting against corrupt power systems driven by the Machiavellian power struggles of older generations (and in doing so, they suffer immense trauma and find themselves displaced by their experiences). Uhhh.... yeah, Victory Gundam is super happy. Don't watch it, just keep that ember of happiness alive in your heart. Re: 1992 and 1993 Gundam projects -- Victory Gundam was a mainline series taking place in the Universal Century, while G-Gundam was its own pro-wrestling fever dream taking place in its own unique timeline. Gundam Wing is singularly responsible for the spread of Gundam fandom into the west. It takes place in its own timeline, After Colony, and features a scene where two untrusting teenage terrorists establish trust in each other by playing classical instruments together. A note on Gundam Seed: Taking place in the Cosmic Era, Gundam Seed can be viewed as almost a remake of the original Gundam, but bringing more contemporary themes into the mix. Also, a lot of surprisingly gory deaths in this one -- they really cranked up the bodily harm for Seed. Gundam AGE: A pretty neat concept of "Hey look at this generational trauma" as the series documents different stages of the same war with arcs following three different pilots and taking place decades apart. Also, AGE resulted in some of the best and most consistent model kits Bandai ever turned out, at least until Witch from Mercury. Unfortunately, the show itself wasn't really that good. Re: You hate babies fighting -- Uhhhh don't watch IBO. I mean, don't watch any of them, but especially don't watch IBO. Gundam Build franchise: Yeah, it's a return to "blatant toy advertising" cartoons and it's weird as hell. There are two different Build timelines in which people build plastic model kits to accomplish their goals -- Build Fighters involves some weird technology where the actual plastic models animate and fight against one another, while Build Divers characters build models which they then scan and use in a giant video game. Bandai seems to be working on something like this in real life... Reconguista in G had some really unique mecha designs and that's all I can ever remember about it. Iron Blooded Orphans is, in my opinion, an incredible series in terms of both realizing its themes and in having really cool battles. Also, "the DILF" is like, an older teenager, but anime really do be that way sometimes. It takes place in its own timeline and has some genuinely rad mecha designs.
1:01:43 Very surprise to see this 'Thai dup' edited version on the list especially with their signature 'Gundam build fighter!' at 1:03:19 Btw Thai dup version almost always dup the anime's 'Title/Name' in the OP so children watching anime know what they're watching
I'm really glad Alicia had such a strong reaction to the Iron Blooded Orphans openings. I'm not a Gundam fan, but that's one of the few I've watched and liked. The reason why Mika (protagonist boy) was being slung over the other guy's shoulder was cause in this point in the show, Mika had already fought a couple tough enemies that forced him to overclock his Gundam Barbatos' systems, including a Mobile Armor, an AI controlled mech series that started something called "The Calamity War" a couple hundred years prior that only Gundam series mechs could reliably fight and beat. Since he was hooked up to the mech itself for way higher reactivity and immersion, it paralyzed him below the neck and the right side of his face. He gets his full movement back when he's hooked back up to Barbatos, but every time Mika went into a fight from then on, it was always tense, cause we all knew that the next time Mika had to push himself to that extent in a fight, even if he won the fight in the end... that would still be the end. There wasn't much of Mika's body left that could function outside of his Gundam, so overclocking one more time meant guaranteed death for our badass protag-boi.
1:11:40 idk if u already got this information, but only first openings (from Origin to Unicorn) are in the same universe (Recongista in G is 1000 years later than Unicorn i think, so author of playlist did a mistake here, and Turn A is kinda ending for ALL of the universes). The rest like Seed, 00, Iron Blooded Orphans and With from mercury are different universe.
-gundam became over the years a name they posted on any kind of (sub-)genre... -the seasons I remember watching were still mostly about any form of war transferred into a scifi setting like colonization, dna-modified humans (like in the movie gattaca) and many more you get to talk about in history classes and co at school etc... -was it all japanese and/or english op and ed? as far as I can remember years ago when they showed here in german gundam wing on the channel tele5 they did a great cover/new version of its opening and ending which sounded really great plus I think they did that for other languages too - cant watch the whole video right now so no idea if it is included but would be nice to hear these multi-language versions too again after so many years... mfg Olli
Found you through AoT and Edgerunners. dear gosh diddly gosh I wish I could see you break down Iron Blooded Orphan with how you get so film buff like with it. it is an amazing Gundam anime for someone that has never seen Gundam at all. Iron Blooded Orphan is basically a two season one off Gundam story you don't really need to have seen any other Gundams in the series to fully get.
1:12:04 Fun fact: the theme song for this, Rage of Dust, was featured in a BiliBili video of an Arknights Doktah farming for LMD/cash and the last enemy tries to make a break for it, and this plays... The video won't be available here in TH-cam as it was uploaded before but got deleted, but it was fun to watch Addition: the VA of Mikazuki Augus, Kengo Kawanishi, voiced Noir Corne and Adnachiel in Arknights Orga Itsuka, the "DILF" she saw, is in Punishing Gray Raven, known as Uncle Watanabe
Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) can be a hard sell for a lot of anime fans. You either had to grow up with it or be introduced to it through Toonami in the '00s like I was. If you do someday take the plunge, I recommend the compilation movies as they clean up the animation and streamline a lot of the story beats.
i always tell people to skip the og series and start with other series like seed, war in the pocket or thunderbolt. the og series is amazing, and has arguibly the best story in the franchise, but its not a good starting point.
@@NMe1612 i love the UC. i still defend war in the pocket to be the best gundam anything, and thunderbolt is amazing. i will even say the original series has the best story of the entire franchise... problem is, its not a good place to start if you knows nothing about gundam.
G Gundam is wild, you might actually like that one, it's one of the first alternate universe series they did, but it's completely off the rails in its premise which is essentially that the world's rich people all fucked off to space and left the poor people on earth. All the rich founded space colonies that are effectively just extensions of the original countries of earth. Every 10(?) years they hold a tournament, a martial arts tournament that incidentally wrecks everyone stuck on earth's shit, with Gundams. It's completely fucking ridiculous, the Gundam from the US is piloted by Chibodee Crocket who is a boxer, it has a football helmet and boxing gloves and dual wields giant fuckoff pistols.
Since you also expressed interest into the SD(Super Deformed) line of Gunpla there are in fact a few series focusing on SD styled gundams, with the SD Heroes series being the most recent, starting with the motif of China’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, before going into world legends.
Gunpla (the gundam plastic models that you can build) aren't that expensive compared to video games and such. They usually go for about £20 where I live - but ofc the larger ones and those special edition gold-plated looking ones that I sometimes see in display cabinets can go for much, much more. You're right though they are a lot of fun to build :) They do take a little more effort compared to the average lego set since you have to pop the pieces out of the plastic frames and they can connect in a variety of different ways that won't always be obvious without reading the instructions carefully. I've definitely had one or two times when I've connected a pauldron or something the wrong way round and had to spend time carefully removing it without bending the plastic. The only Gundam show I've ever watched so far was Iron Blooded Orphans, and I really enjoyed it! I've been wanting to watch the others for some time now, and I think people are saying Witch of Mercury is also really good for newcomers. I've also heard good things about Turn A as well, so that's definitely on my list.
From what I've heard, I'm not giving Turn A a try, but when I finish IBO, and G-Witch can be streamed on one of my platforms.... I'm burning sunward for that academy.
Yes, there's always relationships and romance in Gundam. For sure you will like the new Gundam Witch from Mercury as it's the easiest one to get into with no relation to the other series (other than it's themes). Also the series make the most money out of selling the plastic models.
The first Gundam show I ever watched was Gundam Wing and it has been my favorite gundam show since then. Especially love the Death Scythe wielding gundam x3.
to clarify: the mechs are generally called Mobile Suits, A Gundam is a specific subtype of Mobile Suit that i the face of the franchise and is BASICALLY a super powerful, extra special mobile suit....I'mjust not sure what makes it so special and different.
ether its god like powers (looking at you Unicorn) and most if not all gundams have a V fin antenna and a lot of more powerful tech not found in normal mobile suits like say the gundam frames in ibo or the NT-D in Unicorn, Banshee, Phenex, Narrative and Helios
What makes Gundams special is usually something that makes them "Alive" in one way or another. Sometimes it's literal like the WFM Gundams and numerous Newtype possessed suits. Other times it's figurative like the 72 devils of IBO- some of which make deals with their pilots. In a rare few cases, Gundams gain sentience like the RX-78-2 via A.I. learning. A lot of them are up to interpretation, but that is the general jist of it.
@@gersoncruz1554 ^ Yep!!! My favorite anime!!!
Sailor Moon was 1992, so not THAT old...

Well, if you like shows with very large body counts it'd make you happy
People usually thinks Gundam is about just giant robots fight each other but, it usually highly focused on human dramas and suspenseful political drama
Usually being the operative word, since with so many Gundam series you will find an exception to any rule somewhere in this monster of a franchise. :P

Speaking of GBO, there is also the anime mini-series that came out, tying in with the Breaker 3 game. Ironically enough is one of the instances where we see that game’s protag.
The Origin (as a whole) is a prequel but also an alternative retelling of the original story.

Also, idk if you just cut it out but you only watched the fourth opening of Gundam OO which is also a stand alone show. That one uses real world politics projected into the 24th century.

The series makes it's money on model kits and they're extremely fun and addictive.
And then they go Super Saiyan in G Gundam.
It's crazy how many stories she gets right just from the intros
29:34 Victory Gundam is weird like that. The little ball is called a Haro, he appears in a lot of Gundam shows. He'a a mascot for the franchise.
"It's a little baby gundam" lol
1:00:16
The Build series take place in a Universe where Gundam is a popular anime franchise.
As a short spoilerless summary of the different universes/timelines:
Everything from the start of the video until Victory: Main UC (Universal Century) Gundam timeline.
Quick break down on the mechs, all the mechs are called mobile suits, a gundam is a type mobile suit that is special for one reason or another
Also, not all gundam series are part of one timeline, there are alternative timelines
Edit: quick recommendation, iron blooded orphans is goated, and also don't forget to watch the prolog episode for witch from mercury, also, gundam is not a happy show, don't be fooled like I was
32:05 Mobile Fighter G Gundam took a break from the Universal Century timeline and set it into the Future Century alternate universe, and it swith the formula for Gundam from the real robot genre to the super robot genre, harkening back to the old Mazinger series (in fact, Yasuhiro Imagawa, who directed Shin Mazinger Z, directed G Gundam).
Netflix has the movie trilogy compilation of the original 1979 anime, which is usually a decent place to start--cuts out all the filler and contains all the info needed for later installments.
i dont know if it was cut or something but you missed most of gundam 00's openings and some ova's.
also
you have to listen to chain by back-on . if you like them in those openings then you'll love this song.
But since the origin is a recently created work, it is also a good place to start
"Seed" and "00" are also a good starting point. “Seed” is also my Gundam enlightenment. They both have their own timelines, so it's very easy to understand the story. They are not as profound as UC story, but more in pursuit of the emotional expression of the characters.
If you prefer romance, there's nothing wrong with “Seed” as a starting point👍
Honestly I feel a better start would def be 00 or GWitch. Seed certainly has a rather specific flavor.
I don’t think I’d recommend Origin as a good starting place personally. You get much more out of it if you’ve at the bare minimum watched through 0079. I do think 00, IBO, and TWFM make much better starting places as “newer” entries that have both high quality animation and stories.
@@tusk1026 that's not UC gundam
@@juanmanikings Ok and...?
The 1st video you've watched tells the origins of how the war started. The original Gundam anime aired in 1979. The Origin that aired on 2019 is a prelude to that original series and where the main character of The Origin shows his story before turning into the main antagonist of the 79 anime.
I also love Tielle's voice, her works with Sawano are always great.

I grew up with MS 08th team and Wing, it's cool to see all the other ones. Holy cow some of those songs go so hard.
Also you missed a lot of the gundam 00 openings, which is probably up there of gundam shows I would recommend for a beginner, also gundam origin is a prequel to the original gundam series which centers around Char Aznable the antagonist/rival for the og gundam, also definitely recommend the gundam build series so to explain the build series gundam made model kits called gunpla(gundam plastic models) which is very popular even today so they thought they would make an anime about it where people customize gunpla and bring them to a virtual space or bring them to life to fight in arenas to add more to the fun building aspect of gunpla, and just recently on the AX2022 gundam panel they had a couple players try out a real life version of it although its still in its beta stages since scanning technology isn't that advanced but its getting there
16:18 the ball thing is a Haro ... Amuro built it and it was in 0079 Mobile Suit Gundam ... and they appear in many other Gundam series
I hope the "Macross" series is on her watch list!
That's harder to watch, though Harmony Gold being told to pound sand means it finally can be legally distributed stateside again.
@@bthsr7113 True..... I would settle for the Openings at best.
18:09 Blonde Guy from Origins is Char Aznable, but in Zeta he goes by Quatro Bageena and wears slick aviator glasses
The 08th Gundam series is my favorite personally. I like the jungle vibe in it. Also If I'm not wrong there's like fifty Gundam anime.
Okay, I know I'm commenting on an old video, but Gundam is a neat franchise with *a ton* going on under the hood, so here's some random notes as they pop into my head:
Re: bleeding robots -- Gundam is a series, ultimately, about the atrocities of warfare, and uses the mobile suits to represent different aspects of that theme.
1:01:43 Very surprise to see this 'Thai dup' edited version on the list especially with their signature 'Gundam build fighter!' at 1:03:19
Btw Thai dup version almost always dup the anime's 'Title/Name' in the OP so children watching anime know what they're watching
Fun fact, Gundam is older than sailor moon.
-the seasons I remember watching were still mostly about any form of war transferred into a scifi setting
like colonization, dna-modified humans (like in the movie gattaca) and many more you get to talk about in history classes and co at school etc...

1:06:00 yeah that was Domon Kasshu, who was the protagonist of G Gundam
Found you through AoT and Edgerunners. dear gosh diddly gosh I wish I could see you break down Iron Blooded Orphan with how you get so film buff like with it. it is an amazing Gundam anime for someone that has never seen Gundam at all. Iron Blooded Orphan is basically a two season one off Gundam story you don't really need to have seen any other Gundams in the series to fully get.
It's getting a sequel series soon to continue the timeline. I guess Bandai/Sunrise like how much attention it got.
1:12:04
Fun fact: the theme song for this, Rage of Dust, was featured in a BiliBili video of an Arknights Doktah farming for LMD/cash and the last enemy tries to make a break for it, and this plays...
The video won't be available here in TH-cam as it was uploaded before but got deleted, but it was fun to watch
Addition: the VA of Mikazuki Augus, Kengo Kawanishi, voiced Noir Corne and Adnachiel in Arknights
Orga Itsuka, the "DILF" she saw, is in Punishing Gray Raven, known as Uncle Watanabe
@@marcosdheleno UC is quite dense, but I like it
@@NMe1612 i love the UC. i still defend war in the pocket to be the best gundam anything, and thunderbolt is amazing.
i will even say the original series has the best story of the entire franchise... problem is, its not a good place to start if you knows nothing about gundam.
7:19 despite the intro´s cheery tone its anything but, the main char and supporting cast are pretty much child soldiers in a horrible war ^^''
6:01 ... that op song is from Beyond the Time ... its the main song from Char's Counter Attack
39:35 That's what maintaining a string of successful spinoffs since 1979 will get you. There's a LOT of Gundam series.
