    We are in a time of dire need for people like you who can bridge the gap between China and the West. There is a growing anti-China scene outside of China and a growing Cultural Revolution vibe in China. The thought of it sends chill down my spine. We should all do whatever we can to clear the misunderstandings and ease the tension before it is too late. Your comedy is a way to do that. It reminds us that we are all human after all. Masks are so useful, if they are so useless medical professionals won't use them. They won't need to wear their space suits and gloves too. I think they are useless if you're on a 10 something hour plan ride or is stuck at a cramped area with people who are infected. You are breathing through the same air after all. But if you're running errands or is an essential worker then it can definitely be a life saver.

    I can totally relate to this as an expat living in a small coastal town in Southeastern Queensland. Given the current situation in Australia and the rest of the world, everywhere you go, people might be getting slightly more sensitive and defensive. I guess it's human nature to be afraid of the unknown and the unpredictable, it's a survival instinct.
    I must admit this is a perfect dilemma as I have never before experienced such a cultural shock since I moved to Australia 20 years ago, for better or worse, until several weeks into the outbreak of Covid-19 in the land Down Under, when I popped in a local supermarket wearing a mask on a sunny afternoon.
    I clearly remember people around me were giving me weird looks as if I had leprosy. And that was the very same day when Queensland government issued order to shut down its border with New South Wales. The last time the state government instituted such drastic measures was back in 1919.
    As far as I am concerned, bias and prejudice are product of ignorance and arrogance. International cooperation and mutual assistance among countries are desperately needed in time of crisis like this, sadly, there is nothing left but double standard, blame game, bias and racism. I am afraid the world will never be the same on the other side.

    that's the thing I try to tell my (very skeptical) family members about masks; more than them being effective or not, it's about the fact that by putting on a mask you acknowledge that you're taking the situation seriously and doing your part in curbing the spread, and that in turn makes people realize that they should be more careful as well.

    I think the cultural barriers between countries are somehow higher than what people used to believe in. As someone who also has lived in a different culture for some time and enjoying it, Jesse’s opinion echos with me in many ways, though our cultural experiences are in the opposite directions. One thing, for sure, laughter plays its role. Whether it is the perfect way we can argue about it, but I learned about US pop culture and society through late night talk shows mostly at the beginning. It started with the content being funny. Later it guided me into the profound part of the cross cultural differences. From that perspective, I am really happy to see Jesse is delivering all these laughters. Here in the UK, the problem is that there aren't enough masks for everyone. The government can't even give enough masks to doctors and nurses, so normal people are really having a hard time getting them without paying a huge amount online or whatever. Also, when the outbreak first started here, our government decided that the way to deal with it was a strategy of "herd immunity", before enough people freaked out and they had to start a lockdown.

    • @jesseappell6674
      @jesseappell6674  4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      by far the "best" reason for UK and US to not recommend masks was the shortage and preventing hoarding. But even a cloth shirt or a homemade mask does the basic job of keeping clouds of particles from spreading. Other than the social worry of looking like a terrorist there is no real reason why people can't wrap a cloth around their face before going outside. There is some good data, too, that shows even the "worst" materials for making masks are still over 50% effective smartairfilters.com/en/blog/best-materials-make-diy-face-mask-virus/

      It's really basic logic to wear a mask since the virus is transmitted through droplets. I took a e Convid-19 training course from Australian department of health (it was for my work at the time) and the information I got there was disappointing. Basically they encouraged people not to wear a mask yet they said masks are reserved for medical professional only. Which means they are worried about not having enough supplies. What they don't understand is, saving those masks for professionals won't work cause the public will just get sick and hospitals beds will still over flow.

    Hi Jesse, I'm just wondering if you're banned by the western media. I was searching on youtube for your footage of your interview on BBC in English. What's surprising is that the only result that showed up was this one. And then I tried searched for your name. What's surprising is that all the results are in Chinese. And I fear this: Is it because you're actually speaking rational things about China and thus youtube made you only able to been seen by Chinese people? Cuz I know there are a lot of hate towards the Chinese and Chinese government right now in the US and many other European countries. Whenever I see reports about China, every second they are trying to tell the people that CHINA IS EVIL. Which is laughable to me but SCARY at the same time. I know what really is happening in China but, those media, who are supposed to report the facts and have "Freedom of speech". But they are actually twisting the facts and Fooling the people. They are so dedicated to target all the hate at China and distracting the people from their own problem (Trump). How do you feel about this and what do you think? I really want to know.

    • @jesseappell6674
      @jesseappell6674  4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Haha thanks for the concern! No, I can't be banned from the Western media, the "Western Media" is made of too many companies and people, and not controlled by any one group, so it's a lot harder to get "banned". If you search my name in English on Google you can find a lot more of my appearances on places like NPR and PBS.
      The negative wave of news against China is scary, but it doesn't represent most of the media coverage on China. It may get worse in the future, as a lot of foreign journalists have been banned from living in China, and whether people liked what they reported or not, at least there were people on the ground to see the reality of the situation. There will be a lot of reporting "in the dark" in the future.
      I think for those of us that live between, it's our job to be part of the solution. The problems are fairly obvious, the solutions harder to do, but we can all do something, and I hope people can apply their energies to solving the problems rather than simply pointing them out

      @@jesseappell6674 There are quite a few youtubers who are living in China and making vids about how western media is bias and slanderous, but they vids are suppressed, their vids are demonetized and will not be recommended. these guys found out first hand how their vids are 'censored'.
      here are some of them:

      th-cam.com/video/B_PdQjP0Omw/w-d-xo.html

      @jesseappell6674  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brainwashington1332 hi Brian, thanks for the links!
      I am very experienced with having stuff censored there. This video itself was censored on one of the Chinese platforms (though passed through on others). I probably have one video a week get blocked or restricted on at least one platform there. It sucks a lot, but it's not surprising. Also because videos talking about the censorship get censored themselves, it's my personal feeling that it's also not useful or productive to make videos about it. Their laws are different and there isn't any recourse, so it is what it is. My goal is to make people laugh, and I think people whose audience is truly trying to entertain Chinese people find a way to work around it. It's been my experience the people calling out censorship are more interested in entertaining Westerners than Chinese. I find those videos tend to do more harm than good.
      As for TH-cam censorship, as someone who makes videos on both sides, I can't speak to anything as intense as Snowden. No secret back-channel censorship has ever effected my life. Personally, it's a non-issue. I have routinely had stuff censored in China and every creator I know, both Chinese and Western, has been through that. But nothing of mine has ever been censored on any western site, nor has anything from anyone I know been censored. It's simply not an issue in practice. Perhaps that's me being naive, but as someone that creates for a living, any hypothetical Western censorship is completely negligible for my work
      Far more concerning is Western sites tend to only want stories that fit into the existing media narrative on China, though the same problem exists for Chinese media covering America.

    • @brainwashington1332
      @brainwashington1332 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jesseappell6674 I am not saying that China doesn't censor, everybody knows about the great firewall. I am saying that western media / platforms do the same but it is done covertly and subtly, perhaps not downright censorship, but certain narratives are suppressed which is also a form of censorship but they are rarely mentioned.
      I hope u check out the channels I linked u, they are never recommended by the algorithm, I found them from comments. Some of these guys collaborate on livestreams in the weekends, that's how i found out there are quite a few westerners living in China who are pushing back against western media narratives but they were just suppressed by youtube.
