In this video I discuss my thoughts on how I feel that western media is so very negative when it reports about China. Almost all the news I read in the negative press is either negative or sometimes just not true.

If you live in Shanghai for 100 years, you won't know anything much about China. In Shanghai, you are with some of the wealthiest families in China. Life is modern and there is some level of modernity, civility, and legality.
Move, move, move... Go to the ordinary people. Move out of
Shanghai, go to the lower-tier towns and you will know China better. Shanghai will give you a delusional feeling of a country of goodness.

@@mollygao4551 . Thank you for your mental picture. I've been mentioning some good things to my husband about China. He's getting more receptive. He walked in yesterday when I was watching the walk through the park with a small child in red bicycling around. My husband sat next to me and quietly watched, quite intently. I could tell he was absorbing the peacefulness and beauty. Within this last year I found myself thinking that it would be wonderful to live in China for awhile. At 78, married, and with responsibilities, I can only conjure up mental pictures of the peaceful existence that must be. Much like a time in my past that is long gone. Health and safety always, Molly.

Ken. Lucky you. Ever since my 30's , I contemplated and researched what it would be like living in other countries. Recently, I found China on TH-cam. It's amazing to reflect on my life and how I've been conditioned, since childhood, to have certain thoughts about China. Also, I watched Tienamin Square on TV. Much like Kent State and Waco which was an eye opening shock to my basic beliefs. I also had a Chinese lady guest and her young child as a guest in my house that was arrested in China for her actions in Tienamin Square. Journalists from another country sponsored her and she was able to avoid death by relocating and becoming a citizen elsewhere. Lately, I've thought of her and how China has changed, and wonder if she went back. That was a long time ago. Health, safety, and beautiful days, always.

I'm not Chinese but I've lived in Hangzhou, China for 12 years, and visited many other cities around the country. I've never felt that I was in danger or intimidated by anyone. In fact, I felt more secure here than any most places I've been to around the world. Media sources in general are not trustworthy.

I’ve lived in Beijing for 8 yrs up to 2014. Most Chinese were simple and warm hearted, they helped me to overcome a lot of difficulties though I am a Japanese. Tell you the truth, they liked westerners much much better than Japanese. Most young people wanted to learn native English and they won’t speak the bad things about westerners unless they were humiliated. I just don’t get the point why the developed countries could not accept China. Why Westerners are unhappy to see China’ getting better lives than before? Come on, let’s be fair for everyone according to your democracy policy.

Which government that has never made mistakes or committed atrocities against their own people? China is no paradise on earth, but it sure is not some hellhole it has been made out to be by many in the Western media. If the Chinese people support their government, what right do outsiders have to want to bring them down?
Even just typing the fact that the Chinese people support their government can get me insults and derision here on TH-cam from people whom I'm sure never even been to the country.

I’m a 18 years old Chinese girl who study in Canada now. When I was in China, I could go outside at 9 o'clock in the evening to have a snack(you can see lots of people still walking on street at 10, because most of the shops closed at 10-11) with my friends and I would not be afraid to walk alone on the street at anytime. But now in Canada(where I think it's also a safe country), I would rush back to my dormitory before dark everyday, because it’s very unsafe at night for a young girl. I find out many people from other countries always think that Chinese people will arrested by the government if they say something negative about it, but the truth is you can say anything you want except you are a public figure, all the normal people like me, we can say everything we want on social medias and talk about anything with others in daily life, no one will come and arrest us. China has 1.4 billion populations, the government don’t have that much resources to get spy on everyone and they also don’t need to, because there always be different voices and you cannot control all of them and of course the government knows this simple truth. So, hope people don't judge a country through what they just heard from the media and we are really welcome everyone to visit China and experience the local conditions of this country.
(p.s. Sorry for my poor English, I’m still working hard on it;)

People in the west due to the influence of these ‘reputable’ sources have harboured such a negative POV about China. I know this because I am a Canadian citizen currently in China. My perspective in the past has been very binary as well, and it came to my awareness that this was all a result of bias and a sense of ethnocentrism. Most people who have strong opinions about China has never lived in China before. I have now lived in both countries and see the advantages and disadvantages of both. I have never felt unsafe or oppressed in China unlike what I have been told to believe. The culture here is very homogenous and different from western culture. The people here actually do believe in the government which is something I have rarely seen out west. China is a country of 1.4 billion people. For the country to function, the government has to prioritize their people and it’s been a real eye opening experience especially through this epidemic. I have never witnessed this much unity and self-discipline among people. So many people self-isolated and created social distance not because they were afraid, but they had this very strong sense of civic duty. People felt a sense of responsibility not only to their family (which is heavily valued in China) and to the general community. I was debating on going home because I was afraid and had a firm belief that countries out west like Canada and the US would be more equipped and well prepared to handle this pandemic. However, what I witnessed was what disheartened me most. It really struck me that the US government chose to prioritize its economy over the health of its people, which is a very nearsighted decision if anything. Moreover, for the first time, I felt safer in a country that I had a surmountable amount of prejudice against previously. I learned through this experience to be more objective and not accept what information that comes out of ‘official channels’ as truth unless I have done my own research and lived through my own experience. Ultimately, comparing the life of people in China and those out west, there really isn’t that much of a difference. It’s just mundane people like you and I living mundane lives. Are there things that may be insidious or kept under wraps unknown to the population? Yes, but I think that speaks true to most governments across this entire globe.

Owen Ou Agreed. Although what I meant is that I feel like our perception or beliefs of certain issues are influenced through the filter of the media we have access to. It’s almost in a subliminal level, barely noticeable until you detect a discrepancy by yourself. In this case, people’s perception of China and Chinese people in the west is viewed in a coloured lens even without intending to do so. You can harbour these perceptions without them having any bearings on your daily concerns.

It seems that everyone's forgotten facebook data problems from five years ago and why we all use cookies nowadays... its much easier to place the hype on tik tok. I am an ethnic Chinese, living in Hong Kong. Just come and see how China treats Hong Kong and encroach our freedoms. Expats and foreigners are living in the most prosperours part of China and in your own comfortable shell.
Just take note of the figures quoted by Chinese Premier Li Ke-Qiang (李克強)on the distribution of income. This country has 1.4 billion people, but 0.6 billion is at 1000 yuan or below per month. If you count the ones with 2000 yuan per month, that is 0.9 billion, a staggering 64%.
You are just inside the delusion of survivorship bias ? Your social circle ars surrounded by ones that are like your own - with a lot of money and living in the best part of China. I used to be with a Christian missionary group and visited the poorest parts there in the early 2000's. Their living condition is bad.
Ever heard about the Dunbar's numbers ? I bet none of your acquaintenances have gone into trouble with the Chinese authorities. My friernd's husband was detained for 18 months because the CFO of his company doublecrossed a local official and that local official vent out his anger on my friend's husband, who was just an ordinary accountant. I read a little Japanese but I was able to translate the language on Twitter anyway. It made me so sad to think that those people only see what’s being said from their local media and in their mother language. I absolutely agree with you of the necessity of learning different languages, which is the best way to understand its people and culture. Personally I love japan and I’ve been there many times in the last few years. I really do wish one day people can understand each other and bring peace.

I have spent 12 years in China, 10 years in the United States and 6 years in Sweden and I can tell you that China is the safest of them all. The surveillance cameras are for catching criminals and speeding drivers. When I visit China I generally feel safe knowing that if something happens to me it is probably caught on camera. When I lived in the US, I never left home in the evening unless by car because I was afraid of being shot or robbed(I once heard gun shots outside of my house). In Sweden it is just as bad, I don't go out at night at the fear of getting raped, it wasn't like this in 2013, I used to walk home from clubs at 3am and it was fine, but now I don't dare to walk out alone pass sunset. Western medias targeting China like there's no tomorrow should first make their citizens feel safe before they criticize others countries.

@@emptywithuu yeah right. The refugee issues in Europe were actually seriously discussed in some chinese forums, since we don't have to consider much about this politically correctness(cuz we haven't invaded other countries nor manipulated foreign politics to cause problems, there wasn't such an atmosphere about refugees) it was probably easier for us to see things clearer in some ways than Europe does. And the conclusion was that they might be an unstable factor in your future. I lived in Germany in 2017 for half a year, and found out people really care about being politically correct. Now I've been studied in Germany again since one year ago, got discriminated so much bcuz of pandemic. For over 15 times I got shouted 'virus' at on the streets. This is ironic because the asian people really behave properly in my view, while some other people disturb the society order.

We see here in France people are so misleaded by western médias. Some even hate us so much and without any reason but the things they see on newspapers or tv.
It bothers us very much as I don’t want my son to face any raciste problèmes during his childhood. But western médias seem have been doing this for long long time. It is very difficult to change their ideas, I have tried during my study in France. It was easier as in school people are high educated and they are willing to do their own research.
But in social life, it is too difficult.
Especially at the beginning of Covid 19, not even able to walk out normally for Chinese in France.

    再说了,14亿人政府要雇多少人才能监视的过来???你一老百姓又有什么资格让政府去天天监视你?闲的没事干?

I’ve been living in the US for the past seven years and I completely agree with everything you have pointed out. Some people around me, including my boyfriend, told me to not panic about the coronavirus because they think my anxiety is a result of what’s happening in Wuhan, a “small city where most people live in rural areas with inadequate amount of medical assistance and a government that lies and hides”, unlike the US. This is just one example of the American prejudice and false impression about China; there are evil, nazi-minded classmates who claimed that China deserved it because it is a communist country. Those are his exact words. At first I tried to explain the truth to them, but they either just want to let the topic change or they think I’m a little brainwashed or whatever. Gradually I became so tired of their ignorance, which I guess is not their fault because it’s mainly the manipulation of the western media, but I hope there are more sensible people like you who have can be less stupid. Anyways yeah I felt the growing tension between China and US for the last two years too.

@@realguy6964 In case you don't know, Chinese people are not against PPC as described in west media. People are not against it because it did largely help improve the life quality of the most in the past 30 years. And don't think that as being brainwashed. Because brainwash someone to improve someone's quality of life just doesn't make sense at all. PPC is not perfect, but it's not a devil in the eyes of the west media.

But don’t assume that ALL Chinese support them. If you assume so, then I can safely assume that you are brainwashed.
