You present it like everyone in the world is using apple. And out of those apple users everyone is a devoted siri user. I don’t think either of these assumption is true. Apple has ~20% market share and as an apple user I can tell you that I refuse to use siri (or any voice assistant for that matter). i don’t doubt apple did everything to lock their users into the ecosystem even more, but I wouldn’t call that genius….

Apple's locking in also gives them more control which is why their M series chips are so good. So good, in fact, that the entire chip industry noticed; and we'll all benefit from better chip designs.
Also, imagine being Micro$oft and learning that after billions of dollars of investment in helping OpenAI's development - Apple comes along and gets access for free. No energy hungry data centers to worry about. Run local SLM with a constrained corpus (on a great chip set) or farm it off to somebody else "with a prompt".

There is a more subtle strategic move that Apple mentioned quietly. They plan on using their "private cloud compute" to run LLM or other large processing tasks in the data center. Sure, they are buying capacity from Google, Amazon, and others and using their own slimmed down virtual machines to provide (or attempt to provide) full secure, encrypted end-to-end data transmission that is isolated from the host computers/data centers.
But the even more subtle statement was they are going to use their own Apple Silicon in the servers hosting the virtual machines. This means Apple, in the long-run, is planning to develop their own custom silicon optimized for data center AI operations and not rely on Nvidia. This has very significant long term issues for investors and the stock market and means that Apple joins the select few of Nvidia and Google (with the tensor processors) and perhaps just a few others, as taking the AI competition to custom silicon. Everyone else has to buy their cloud processing and silicon.
So Apple is positioning in the long-run to use custom silicon to dominate the AI business in the same way custom Apple processors allowed the iPhone, iPad and now Macs to lap the competition in hardware design?

I don't think they actually stole it. Yes it was a smart move but as you pointed out they have cultivated a very bad relationship with 3rd parties. I believe the era of closed systems has come to an end and apple did not realize that yet. To combine AI with actual meaningful use cases makes sense and this is why I believe that is something good. Still they control everything and want to be the gatekeeper as usual. Open Systems will win over that. People should get control about their data and companies that understand and implement that will win this battle.

@xenu321 ----- Actually what they did in AI is very ingenious and more difficult to implement. They implemented Siri on device for the overwhelming majority of Siri queries. Siri is by far the most heavily used assistant and Apple knows which queries are the important ones. Second they built on device expertise in how to use all Apple devices. This is the same data that their telephone tech support people use. These two items are done with small language models.
For larger language models they built Private Cloud Compute running on Apple silicon. These will answer queries securely for items requiring larger language models. Since they run on Apple Silicon in Apple data centers which are powered by renewable energy produced by Apple.
The two major pain points for companies implementing AI are the extremely high cost of electricity on the public network and the massively expensive servers built by Nvidia. For the majority of queries Apple are avoiding these heavy expenses which will allow them to be more aggressive in the rollout of AI without charging folks a premium.

They're playing catch up the way they hate: they were forced to show something ai related instead of cooking something "better", even if took them years to do.

A big question is which way the money goes. Google pays Apple (billions per year) to be the default search engine. Will the money go the other way for ChatGPT? Or is there some incentive for OpenAI to pay Apple? I guess we'll know when the fall quarter financial statements come out in January.

    • @koolsush

Open AI’s intent is an automatic addition of billion+ users. The data that those users will generate will invaluable. As Apple mentioned, the moment a query goes out to chat GPT, it escapes the secure net. It’s a win-win for both, at least till the time Apple launches its own LLM

The reason why Apple could not do anything for a while is because of their stupid cost cutting with RAM in their phones and ipads .. and even more stupid things like saying 3GB = 6GB ram in IOS. I work on developing these models and the main bottleneck is memory and memory bandwidth. They apparently tried using the flash storage as a swap but still heavily bottlenecked by memory for any good model to run in a good timeframe (also it eats up your free storage while most iphone users struggle with it too). It is a shame that their trillion transistor bionic chips from years ago are more than capable of running these models comfortably but they cannot as they are severely bottlenecked by RAM. Had they provided more RAM in their mobile devices, had they not made these petty cost cutting in RAM and storage in these premium phones - it would have been a matter of just a software update. Now they pay for it through unnecessary workarounds , R&D and delays due to this unnecessary problem while GPUs from years ago are running usable LLMs like a piece of cake.

one thing I don't think you mentioned that is also a cool point about apple's design. There has been alot of anger about how all the training data is collected and how all interactions with it are used to train it. Apple specifically making you choose to send data to chatGPT everytime and using this 'private cloud' seems to create a much privacy and user focused way of being able to use some of these features.

The choice matters insofar that partnering with OpenAI is an icky choice.
What Apple has that many of these companies in the AI race on the hardware or software side is good faith.
They know it and it’s why in the keynote there was a lot of emphasis that Apple is proactively making the implementation more secure and private (per their claims).
The companies like the factories manufacturing for the fast fashion are in it for the money. It’s just to make a quick buck any way they can. Nothing is more emblematic of this than Altman taking OpenAI from its nonprofit foundations to a for profit venture. These people in the AI race will steal, “move fast and break things” (yeah things they don’t own, never paid for so they don’t gaf) if it makes them a buck fast. But what’s the rush? Why is everyone so amped up? Why is everyone rushing to get rich quick?
Apple IMO needs to boot these partnerships off asap. It’s just a bad look partnering these companies. It hurts brand, and that should be the last thing Apple execs should want to do if they want their shares to not nosedive to be worth pennies in time to come.

    • @gr8dvd

You're not even close to qualified to talking on the subject that the title of your video claims to be about their developer. Preview of what they are pitching is literally no better than the October 2022 preview of Google Bard an old AI model that has since been absorbed and rolled into two others. Apple is light years behind. They didn't steal anything and open AI can snap their fingers and revoke apples access to DPT at any time so they shouldn't be making bold claims like that. All of the assistance on the pixel devices and Android devices that are actually decent phones and not the cheap burner. Pay-as-you-go phones have extraordinary AI built right into them. Did Apple won't see? Probably for like 3 years. Try to cope harder. About your senior citizen phone. You're paying two grand for
