Actually, the free-handed will have better adhesion than straight lines, for particular angles of dangles.

Yes, please describe what you are doing, just as you did here. I hate the ASMR videos where they don't talk, and then don't show enough of what they are doing so you can't figure it out, may as well not make a video.
Sounds good! i'll keep doing it. Some of those ASMR maker channels are pretty cool, but i wish they would explain more. I get that the no-talking videos have wider appeal (every language can understand silence) but I always want to know more!
2:00 A problem with using grooves like that is that your wood will flex somewhat when the sand is packed
yeah flex is an issue, but that's why i used hickory, the flanges, and the threaded rod. It's probably not something that can be solved perfectly, though
Regarding your question at the end of the video: Yes, absolutely. I am very interested in solutions and tricks like this.
No one talks about this stuff. One video about intricacies like this is worth about 10 videos of people just going through the process in a broad-strokes fashion.

It's been a good day so far. It stopped raining a while back and it's getting warmer. I have just watched a video by Myfordboy testing an electric bike, and a new video by you about making flasks. Now if I could win the lottery or get a girlfriend my life would be good. Sigh.

@@PaulsGarage Thank you. We have a saying that go's "money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a better quality of misery". I would settle for that. As for using hickory for a flask, I don't think we have it in the UK. Perhaps concrete would do.

Wax castings work the best
To hold the upper and lower pieces together, why not use small metal latches like the ones on rugged boxes etc. ?
Don´t need to screw anything and they don´t wear out as quick

I prefer the detailed look at things... I'm a dolt and unless I have a good amount of detail for how to make/do things... well... let's just say "failure is more than an option" ;) So thanks for the details here :)

Dowel pins made out of metal would be also useful for locating the two parts together,
The screws in the side flanges do that. If I leave them sticking out the bottom they fall I to the holes in the lower flange in the same spot every time. One benefit of this hardwood, it won't accidentally thread a new hole, it only goes into the pre drilled hole

If you want it heavier, make it out of Osage orange. But hickory is plenty strong without breaking your back
Osage is pretty awesome! It's denser yeah but it actually has less bending resistance than hickory. Fun fact from my longbow making days long ago lol

Yes definitely support the cope and drag both with the rod. I only showed doing one on camera because I had a timeline to stick to lol

Gingery lathe bed coming right up 👍. That will be horizontal, though. I have some sword patterns around here too, maybe I'll do one of those in the vertical configuration.

Interesting idea having the sand retaining/strengthening ridges recessed into the side of the flasks, rather than proud. Means the strengthening ridges themselves are made of sand, not wood (or whatever material you choose to make your flasks from). Also, I note you have two such ridges (top and bottom) per flask; BlackBeard only has the one central (and wobbly) ridge.
Apologies if all the highly technical jargon confuses anybody 🤣.
The cut in ridges are exactly like you say, they mean I don't need wood protruding into the flask and taking up space. I don't know if two grooves are necessary but it seemed like a good idea? Not sure
@@PaulsGarage I suspect wooden supports would be stronger than rammed sand, though.
Two rudges are definitely a good idea. A single central strengthening ridge means that only half the sand is supported, the other half is effectively hanging from it. And we all know how strong sand is in tension.
I'm not sure which works better. I've heard people say both. What's clear is that no supports is clearly the worst option

Router is probably the fastest way. I have a router around here I just hate using it
