Cactus and thorn (other natural plant spikes) were thought to be less harmful to records. PROBABLY TRUE They did reduce surface noise and added a "mellow," quality. As seen here they could be "sharpened" (acyually RE-pOINTED). This allowed reuse with a new point each time. Outside of economy, this may account for their reputation for preserving tecords by removing temptation to teuse point.
I bought a big lot of needle envelopes from various makers (Brunswick, Victor, etc) and there were a few packs of these RCA Victor cactus packs in there! I usually use BCN from the UK (www.burmesecolourneedles.com/).
