    Avi left PTX in 2017 and Matt replaced him as bass. All the members of PTX have and still are writing their own songs, collaborating with other members and preforming separately. Their are no egos within PTX which is why there is always so much energy in their performances. Both Avi and Matt have brought unique influences to PTX.

    Did you notice that Scott took the baseline for Matt when he was singing lead? Scott has an amazing range. He also covers baseline for Avi in Hallelujah. Kirsten also has a fabulous lower range. You can hear it well in their version of Shallow. Great reaction!

    S&G wrote and recorded the song, but PTX now owns it. Kevin actually uses the stomp on stage to augment the sound of the percussion. Thank you for getting Kirs-ten’s name right. I hear and see commenters say it wrong and it sounds like nails on a chalkboard. She is a star and deserves better.

      Kirstie has an acoustic version of her song Break a Little that is gorgeous. I hate to say that I don't like something she did, but the pop version just didn't do it for me. Then I heard the acoustic version, and it is hauntingly beautiful.

    "Sounds of Silence" was released in February of 2019 and "90's Dance Medley" was released April 0f 2021, FYI. Scott sings small bass parts when the bass (Avi or Matt) have solos. KIrstie is a mezzo soprano, which is a full and can be low voice. A lot of people also talk about this song as being a somber song, but the way PTX sings it reminds me of a plea. It's like "Hear us! We are telling you something important! Wake up to what is happening in the world!"

    The new bass is Matt Sallee and has a music degree from Berklee College of Music. Not sure how his range compares to Avi's but he seems to have trained to develop his baritone range where Avi developed his low bass. Avi left after the end of Pentatonix's 2016-17 tour and they did some recordings and videos with four singers, then brought Matt in on a trial basis to record some tracks for their 2017 Christmas album and do the 2017 Christmas tour. I wonder how much time he had to learn all of Avi's parts for the tour repertoire.

    The song isn't inherently low.
    In all recorded and released versions of the Simon & Garfunkel original (there are at least three studio versions), Since sings in normal male midrange and Garfunkel supplies high harmony / counterpoint.
    In the Disturbed cover (both the studio and live TV versions), Draiman sings the first two verses low, then jumps up an octave.

    • @Badger77722
      @Badger77722 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've heard some speculation that Scott starts off singing low because of the Disturbed version, but when he comes back in for the final verse, he's back in his more normal range.

    So, when Pentatonix arranges a song, they do a bunch of research on that song. I bet they’ve heard at least 5 variations of this song, and picked out some of the best pieces to put together, with their own flavor. After all, their nods to Walk Off The Earth (WOTE) in “Somebody That I Used to Know” were, to quote Ben Folds, “Bitchin’.” That also includes the screen shakes from WOTE’s version of “I Knew You Were Trouble,” which means they did research on the groups who covered the song, and not just covers of the song. Avi’s “Beard Guy” hat (RIP, Mike), and Mitch’s mannerisms and vocal stylings definitely point to their Gotye “cover,” “5 People 1 Guitar!” (Or as the thumbnail called it, “5 PEEPS 1 GUITAR.”) So any other versions of any songs they’ve done likely have snippets or vibes from that song’s history, like the poetic, upbeat (Thanksgiving) vibes from “Over the River,” or the Disneyesque key changes added to a previously key-change-free Disney song (Can You Feel the Love Tonight). Even the actual film clips from the original Wizard of Oz, showing defining moments of the original actors who played the characters currently singing near the end of “Wizard of Ahhhs.” And they originally got the idea to make all these songs better by incorporating other artists’ versions to the original from Shawn Stockman, on the Sing-Off, when he said, “I’m still a performer, so when I hear y’all doing stuff like that [impressive musical nuances], I’m like this [takes notes of what to copy], on the low.” They paid him tribute in their next performance, adding a well-placed Motown Philly “Mmm-DA-Da,” to a Britney Spears Medley.
